Hello,
Newbie here, first post, on trial version of MP.
I'm trying to output DSD256 (4X) from playback of FLAC files (44.1 to 352Khz)
My DAC is configured (ASIO), I've selected 4x DSD native in Output encoding and I'm able to play the files.
Audio Path says it's outputting DSD 256 via ASIO but with this error message:
"not using enough bits to output the input directly"
What does this mean ? (I get this message at all FLAC rates)
Is it actually outputting DSD256 ? (my DAC doesn't have a readout),
Do I have something wrongly configured ? Couldn't find any mention of this in the Wiki.
Thank you,

Usually that message means your DAC doesn't support the bit-depth of the file you're trying to play. Not sure how that pertains to PCM to native DSD conversions in this case, does it happen if you select 2xDSD native DSD? If your DAC supports DoP you might try those options too.

Wow, thanks Awesome Donkey - looks like this newbie found a bug !
Really appreciate you digging into this.
If I select any DoP rate, it reports "Direct Connection", but any native gives the error.
so I thought it was my DAC until I saw your last message.
I have another system, with a different DAC, and will try MC on that later.
Thanks again, I'll likely be back with lots more questions soon ;D

Okay, I did try it on my system with DAC that does support native DSD up to DSD512 over ASIO. And in that test when any of the Output Format > Output Encoding options are set to native DSD it displays that message in the Audio Path, but if I switch to DoP it doesn't display it. So I'm not sure why it's displaying that with DSP Studio conversions to native DSD, as in my mind it doesn't make any sense and is confusing as a) you're not outputting PCM and b) the DAC supports native DSD up to the 8xDSD (DSD512) I selected and is outputting that. So I can see the confusion here.
Maybe Matt/Bob/Hendrik knows why it's displayed there when it honestly doesn't make sense for native DSD output.

Good find. Next build:
Fixed: Audio Path could report "not using enough bits to output the input directly" when playing DSD incorrectly.
