Hey,
Just got this idea when I was typing in a file's name field.
This would be something I dont think any other software has and would be really clever.
You know how you have the tool 'get properties from filename'.
Well this could be extended so that when we are typing in the name in the properties box say for instance, it breaks down the file into the segments seperated by '-'s and then tries to see if any of the segments match what we've typed so far.
If they do then it suggests this as the auto complete first rather than anything from the db as hopefully we wont be adding the same song twice to our db.
What'd you think? I think it would be REALLY powerful and useful a tool :)

Not sure. Just how often do you edit the main properties of a music file that already has a reasonably accurate file name? Me, not often. If ever.
Neat idea - just not sure it would get used. But then what would I know? :D
-
I do it every now and then.
Especially with artists such as Jay-Z where the rename tool just totally fails due to the extra - being in there.
It'd be a useful little extra. Something to make this stand out above the other software packages.

Fair enough, but I tend to drop the hyphens as I like my property/filename conversions to be completely reversible, so I would use "Jay Z".
What would be good though - if MC could have an option to do a character substitution, eg '-' in a property becomes '_' in the filename, and vice versa, eg:
Track #: 5
Artist: Jay-Z
Name: A Song
Filename: Jay_Z - 05 - A Song.mp3
-
I'm pretty sure you can already do this using the find and replace tool in MJ9
I just like mine to be how they are meant to be:
ie: jay-z :)
-
I believe this situation occurs because of MC's bluntly restricted rules about naming conventions. If you look at Tag&Rename for instance, it REQUIRES the info typed correctly.
Example
My rule:
Artist - Song (notice the spaces before and after '-')
My songs:
Sade - Some song
Jay-Z - Hard Knock Life
produces:
Artist: Sade
Song: Some song
Artist: Jay-Z
Song: Hard Knock Life
BUT if you had the rule Artist-Song (no spaces anymore)
the tags would look like this:
Artist: Sade - Some song
Song:
Artist: Jay
Song: Z - Hard Knock Life
It's maybe easier to use MC's rule style and produces less human errors, but my personal opinion is that harder rules would be better for us perfectionists :)

Marty3d - I like this. More stringent format checking please, J River chaps!
