Title: Recovering playlists after library location changed
Post by: mbalcarek on February 21, 2025, 01:20:42 pm
Hello,

I had to change the location of my music from y:\music to y:\ . In Media Center, I deleted the old library and rescanned (I now realize this was likely a mistake). My playlists are listed but are empty in Media Center.

Can I recover them and point them to the new location? A simple replace of y:\music to y:\ would be ideal.

I DO have backups of all files.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have library backup? by that i mean the MC database. If you have it then you can restore it and do things correctly

Library backup zips have timestamps in the filename so choose the latest which had the old library with all your playlists i.e. time before you deleted it and rescanned to.

File -> Library -> Restore Library

After restore verify that playlists are populated. don't try to play them as files are not found because they are not available currently as you have relocated it (y:\music vs y:\)

If library wise everything looks correct then select all your music files in MC which you did move and press F6 to open rename move and copy files tool

1. Select "Update Database to point to new location (no file rename, move or copy)"
2. Uncheck all the other checkmarks than the last which says "Find & Replace"
3. Set Find What: y:\music
4. Set Replace With: y:\
5. Verify that paths looks correct in the preview (Action should state "update") and press ok

That should tell your database to point to new location for moved files and MC will yet again see all your files which you moved

before restoring...

Turn off auto import (Options > Library and Folders > Auto Import > uncheck "Run auto import in the background")

When restoring, ensure that 'Restore settings' is unchecked. This will prevent auto import from removing the moved files from the library.

Proceed with lepa's instructions.

Once all done and happy, go back into options and re-enable the auto import setting you changed to begin with.
