Title: Media Center 9.0.100 beta
Post by: Nikolay on January 17, 2003, 07:44:29 am
Media Center 9.0.100 beta is available.

Things will crash and not work.  If that worries you, please wait for a couple of weeks.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90100.exe

NOTE: Please do not re-submit bug reports posted in MC 9.0.98 & 9.0.99 threads. We will look for bugs in both threads.

Changes
1. Fixed: Previous version exhibited odd behavior during installation and CD lookup.

I have reported in some past threads that I am getting an error in recording. While this is true, I have found that recording actually does work even though the "Test" doesn't. I can't control the volume even though I turn MC's recording volume all the way down and also the "recording" and "mixer" volume in my sound card controls. There is also no volume slider in MC. I didn't know it was supposed to be there until reading some recent threads.
All this leads me to believe that it has something to do with my sound card configuration. How does one go about re-installing it? I have tried deleting it from my system devices and having an automatic reinstall upon startup but that doesn't seem to change any behavior. Help would be appreciated.

In .99 the audio analyzer seems to be broken, it is analyzing everything to 100% peak volume.

Bugs:
1. When highlighting multiple tracks in a playlist (my test was in Recently Imported) and pressing Delete, the tracks are deleted but the selection/highlight remains...so the tracks that scroll up and replace the deleted tracks are automatically selected...UI bug.

I have also noticed the analyzer at 100% for every file, since .99

There is no need to re-post bugs you've posted in the bug thread for builds 98 or 99.  We'll take a look at those next week.

I just imported 3 new albums into MC and only 2 were automatically updated into my Smartlists, the other I had to go in and do manually.

This bug has been around a long time...with multiple sound devices under XP Home, the MC volume control is always changing the volume of the system default sound device instead of the zone specific sound device.

Windows ME:

Well, there's good news and bad news.  MC now makes an attempt to look up using yadb, but I've yet to have it actually recognize a disc  (and these are discs that I know are in freedb).  But, at least if the disc is not recognized, the track numbers are listed so that the disc is playable, although no data is listed, and MC is not requiring me to manually enter the CD data when its not picked up by yadb....

I read the request not to repost bugs, but until the tagging issue is fixed  (MC won't let me change ANY data, such as ratings, comments, genres, etc--this bug didn't occur until the 99 build), I really can't do much with the ipod plugin....

1. No desktop icon
2. The entry for JRiver Media Center on the program      listing (from the start menu) shows 'empty'
3. No volume controls (see separate thread)
4. Trying to burn gives a 'cannot start burn' message
5. Trying to delete a file from the hard drive gives :-

Any solutions ?

John !

Thanks for your reply.

I have a collection of more then 700 Cds from all the genres I am intended to move to the Nomad Jukebox 3 40G I've bought couple of weeks ago.

I can't waste my time putting all the tracks manually so info support is of crusial importance.

YDDB is not the match to CDDB (o lot of CDs especially classical comes "unknown"). I don't know why you stop supporting CDDB (licensing fees) but it's a MAJOR setback for me in my decision to use or not to use your program.

Are you planning to reinstall support for CDDB in the near future ?

Is it a way to automatically eport track infos from Music Collectorz program ?

2. YADB can't even find the 8 Miles soundtrack (Eminem)...wazzup?

Fine, it plays tracks now, but with an attitude.

Some tracks sound as if they had been recorded from a vinyl player that had problems keeping the same(!) speed for the time of recording. They sound ok when I play them with Real player, let alone on the CD player.
MJ 8 replayed them ok too. Format: mp3, VBR 192kb.
(NB: At the time of listening I was cold sober...)

Any ideas what MC is trying to tell me?

For what it's worth, system details below...

1. YADB still not working good. Looks in Artist instead of Album Artist and returns obscure results. (My Muse songs returned songs by Coldplay ?)

2. Can't edit fields unless you open the properties window. It just never saves the updates you do.

3. Analyzing audio: Replay gain is ALWAYS -22.54dB!

4. It would be nice if you could add a view sorting by Album artist (Auto) and it would actually work. I guess the Auto means that if no Album Artist is given, the software uses the Artist field.

>> YADB still not working good.
Are you doing CD Lookups Or Digital ID Lookups?

If your doing CD Lookups it does not look at the fields it looks at the Size of tracks and Num Of Tracks On The CD.

Somtimes there are CD's that will match, CDDB Called this a fuzzy match. when more than one CD returns somthing other than an Exact match.

-----------------------------------

If your doing a YADB Digital ID lokup YADB does not look in the fields it scans your file for a Digital Fingerprint and then looks for it on the server. it has nothing to do with fields.

--------------------------------------------

>> 3. Analyzing audio: Replay gain is ALWAYS -22.54dB
Not me

Maybe somthing is wrong on your system \ Maybe somthing to do with your MC databases that you can not detect?

--------------------------------------------

As far as i Know MC9 Does not use "album artist" as a field, but if you had it when you upgraded from MJ8 to MC9 it will include it in the database. but as far as i know it will not use the ID3v2 Field for this it will use the comment field to store it in.

look at your files where you can see your tags, and see what id3v2 field it is stored in.

Bugs

1.  CD Labeler is not recognizing internal artwork.  This is an old bug that was fixed in V8.

2.  Install program removes all file associations.

3.  Changes made in content view are not saved, as reported by Faruz.

Request

Change closing of CD Labeler from automatic to manual.  I generally print the label first and then have to reopen the Labeler to print the cover.  If I'm not satisfied with the results, it has to be reopened each time a label prints.

BUG:

Decode files to cd (from APE) causes MC to initialize Audio Analysis when Start is selected for the burn. RG is not selected in the DSP settings. Why would it need to do this if it is not one of the options picked?

Also Gapless does not stay selected when chosen from this set of options. Instantly sets back to default when OK is clicked. Either with slider or the drop-down.

ADDITIONAL:

AAC and MP4 files are A.W.O.L. again. MJ8 can see and play at least the mp4s. AAC has not been seen by either version.

A nice surprise after rebooting is the change of Explorer icons for all of my MP3 files to a new icon which displays the bitrate.  I was playing around with a few MP3 utilities that I downloaded so I'm not sure if the change is the function of MC or of some other program.  I hope it's because of MC!

I've tried different tracks and it does it always during the transfer of several tracks.  I'm using a Kiiro 128Mb player that interfaces with windows XP professional as a shared drive.  Version 90095 was fine, 100 has caused the problem.  I installed on top of 0095.

Hi all

You are still doing a good job and moving in the right direction. Think of all the essential things that have already been fixed!

Now I don't want to complicate the issues at hand or suggest a major change but... have you thought about another free database that you could link to? Maybe freedb http://www.freedb.org/ is a better choice than YADB? Just a suggestion I don't know if it is but you may want to take a peek at it.

Importing mp3 files renames Track# tag 01 to 1... adding the option to fix 1 to 01 a la Tag&rename could be in place :)

Newhere> YADB is based initially on freedb data plus what all the MC users have added.  J River will continue to use YADB as it is their own sytem... they own the datbase and wrote the code to access it.  As far as I can tell there are not actually any problems with YADB. I haven't found any genuine shop bought cds yet that were not in it...

Bugs:
1. No matter how you set the Behavior settings (in Options), you cannot make selecting (highlighting) a subset of tracks in a playlist and pressing [Enter] replace Playing Now tracks and just add the selected tracks.  MC always add all of the tracks in the playlist being viewed and starts playback at the first track selected.  One would think that pressing [Enter] would follow the 'Play button' behavior, but it does not.  How do we just press [Enter] to queue/play only the selected tracks?

2. After every CD burned by MC, MC makes my CD-RW/Rom drives inaccessible.  I have to stop and restart MC to gain access to my CD-RW and CD-Rom drives.  Otherwise, Windows report 'Please insert a disc in drive X:' error...and MC does not recognize a disc is inserted either (obviously).  [The burn was successful.]

3. I have 'Eject after write' option set and MC is not ejecting the CD after burning a CD.  [The burn was successful.]

4. The CD burner is 'wacked' on its burning capacity indications...it thinks the capacity limit for CD-Rs is 680mb and for CD-RWs is 620mb.  Yet, I routinely burn 702mb and 641mb (respectively) w/o problems using MC...I just press 'Ok' to the 'over capacity' warning the CD burner pops up.  Seems like we need a user settable 'advanced' option that lets us 'tell' MC what we know our burner(s) can do.

My libray back up (MC .100) works fine.

What doesn't is the tag look up.

Every CD returns no tag info. Just bought a whole stack to rip  (All top 50) and none of them return tag info.

It goes through the process of looking OK but fails to find any info.

Re: no tag info

Yeah, I finally got the HTPC together and began serious ripping this weekend, only to find that I'm striking 000 on YADB hits.  I thought, okay, maybe Bruce Dickinson's solo albums aren't _that_ popular, but when Ozzy's No More Tears failed to get a match, I knew something was wrong.

Some people are complaining about YADB itself, but it'd be nice to know it's simply a bug in the lookup.

Also, in case this hasn't been mentioned: from .88 to .100, the ability to edit track info directly in the list view has ceased to work.  You can rename the track name, for instance, and if you hit Enter, or tab, or an arrow key to move to the next song, it reverts back.  In the absence of YADB success, this is salt on the wounds as it makes naming tracks a real chore.

Disclaimer: I appreciate it's a beta product and only look forward to better things ahead!

Take care,

-Doug

Media editor will not decode APE format.

Also, there no longer seems to be a way to select a 2 second gap when burning CD's.  I don't use the feature that much but when I do convert our church sermons from tape to CD, I like to use the 2 second gap that used to be available.

Thanks all.

Hi all at JRiver

When I send a CD to a playlist it's icon color changes from red to black. It then seems to think it is a ripped file and not a CD anymore.
Why do I send a CD to a play list you may well ask....
Because when I type in the CD info and then rip only certain fields are written into the tag fields. and so I make a playlist to copy and paste to sync them.

I would prefer if all fields that were changed while typing in the CD info would be transfered durring the ripping process. If there is something I am missing out on I would appreciate a pointer as I still have over 100 CDs to type in and RIP about 60 done sofar.
I use a custom VBR mp3 to encode

I realise it says MC ver9.0.88 here I have MC 90100on a wk200 partition thats not non the web

Fixes: the "Invalid Entries in Database" bug (378,039 files) is no longer a problem for me. Also, "Export Playlist" is now active simply from selecting the Playlist in the Tree View.

Bugs:

1. Files with extensions JPG and JPEG are imported. JPG's can be opened within MC, but JPEGs get a "File not found" message. I think the extension is getting truncated to 3 characters.

2. Pressing "Shift+Click" in the new scrollbars does not move the scroll position directly to the Shift+Click position; it only moves it a page in that direction.

3. Pressing "Enter" while viewing songs plays all displayed songs, not all selected songs. No option found to change this behavior.

4. Smartlists and Playlists do not copy. If you drag-n-drop a list to a Playlist Group while holding the Ctrl key, the

Suggestions:

1. Since Alt+Enter brings up the selected files' Properties, Alt+Enter could close the Properties view and update the files. Would be VERY nice/fast.

2. I'd like to see Esc dismiss the Properties view when the focus is in it.

I'm glad that selection lists for File Properties fields such as "Genre" are now being populated with contents of existing entries, in addition to the selected files.

However, I think the selection lists should be limited by the Search Criteria currently in effect. It's pretty odd to be able to choose "Alternative" and "Blues" for images, or "Processed" and "Cropped" for audio.

1. When you use Move/Copy Disk files to move files to another location and then you click 'Yes' to the popup that says "Would you like to remove any empty folders that this action has produced?", the MC My Computer directory listing is NOT updated to remove the folder(s) that clicking "Yes" removed...you have to press F5 (Refresh) to cause a manual update.

1. Can you please, please, please add a new File Info (Track Info > File Properties) read-only field called "Tags" or "Tag Types" and summarize/list the tag types like Id3V1 and/or Id3V2 (or whatever is appropriate for the media selected)?  This would be quite helpful and eliminate having to navigate to the Format window and clicking on each file individually to know whether you have v1, v2 or both types of tags on your MP3s.  Thanks for 'listening'...

Bug:

For several builds of the 9.0 beta I've noticed that after installing the newest build the handheld plug-in info shows 3.0.16 as the IPod version. Is this a bug or am I missing something.

Bug: (?)

Several days ago someone wrote about "file in use" when trying to install the IPod plug-in. I thought (and wrote) that maybe the individual had not exited the program. Today I experienced the same problem.

I knew I had exited MC and still got the same message, however, upon going to "Processes" under the Taks Manager in Windows I found that MC was still showing as running although it was not listed under the "Applications" tab. I terminated the process and then the plug-in installed properly.

Well, here's a bug for you. Don't think it's been reported, but I could be wrong:). CD write settings, use dsp and playback settings two things happen, 1st the crossfade setting does not stay where it's set, it always moves back to standard with a 0.1 delay, I try to set it at smooth, with a 1.0 delay, will not stay there. 2nd when trying to burn a CD, it automatically opens the analyze box, try to click cancel and the cd write box closes, this happens repeatedly, try to uncheck the analyse box and the burn is cancelled. 3rd if you do analyze the files, it only does a partial and then the analyse box closes, and you have to start all over.

Is this a bug?

Last night I was tracking down a bug in the iPod Plug-in. It was with a particular Album. I opened Artist (Sade) then Album (Lover's Rock). 22 songs appeared; one MP3 and one APE for each track. They were sorted by track, thus went MP3 / APE / MP3 etc. I double-clicked the song that was failing and "it" started to play.

In fact, the entry for the MP3 file was bad, and the file in question did not exist. The bad entry was not reported by MC - it simply started playing the first track that wasn't bad. That happened to be the APE version of the same song. (Steve, if you're reading this... this is the reason that the song appeared to be OK in the MC DB).

It seems like bad entries should be reported... unless it's in Party Mode.

Post by: RandyP on January 21, 2003, 02:31:58 pm
Cosmetic bugs:

1. The "Speaker" just doesn't belong in the new MultiMedia land of MC9. See updated icon in view on the right.

2. No separation between "Playlists" and "CD, DVD..." icons. On right, the "CD, DVD..." icon has been edited, moving the CD lower while keeping the "equipment" the same.

3. The Plug-ins icon was too big and too contrasty. With more than one Plug-in, the icons ran together. It's been modified in several ways to improve appearance, and positioned one pixel further right. Due to GIF compression, some of the cosmetic improvements aren't visible here.

4. The Playlist Groups icon was a full 16 pixels high, so it ran together as shown on the left. Using a modified icon in my own dialog box, there is space between the Playlist Groups yet the icon retains its character.

You can also see my iPod iCon in a tree here. It looks kinda washed-out when used against the light blue background. Yet it looks like a real iPod when it's on a white or dark background.

These icons are in a 24-bit file suitable for CImageList (COLOR24) at:

    http://www.eldoradosoft.com/temp/ColorTreeIcons.bmp

******* Please note: I submitted a bug about losing transparency in icons using .098. After some investigation, I got it to work (as you can see above). In fact, I think there was a problem in .088 that has been corrected somewhere prior to .100. Now the Mask Color is (0, 128, 128) as I expected it to be. I don't know why (0, 130, 132) worked with MC9.088... but MC9.100 is fine.

Bugs:
1. The Portable Device plug-in still crashes MC everytime you attempt an upload (to a USB-connected CF-card reader).  MC just crashes (disappears) after the 1st file is uploaded...no error message...just bye, bye Mr. MC.

2. The nag message that tells the user that he/she has queued more data to upload to a portable device than space available is popping up too often...everytime you navigate to the portable device's node or folder on the device.  I believe in MJ 8.0 this nag message was only displayed once per 'session' or upload queue.  This is a pain if you are trying to view folders on the device to delete files to make room and you get the nag message everytime you navigate (like 'duh'...I know I'm over the limit...leave me alone and I will delete some files to 'please' Mr. MC).

3. On a view scheme, if you have 'Add a grouping level' turned on for a component in the view scheme and you attempt to use Locate File... <view scheme name>, MC can not drill down passed the component with the grouping level to next lower-level component and 'locate' what you want.  So, if your view scheme is Artist/Album and Artist has 'Add a group level' turn on (with Grouping Size of 3), MC can NOT locate past the Artist level and just shows you all the tracks at the corresponding 'group level' like A-C, D-F, etc.  This is very frustrating when you want/like the grouping level concept, but can NOT use Locate File... to get the the proper Artist/Album node (without turning off 'Add a grouping level').

4. If you attempt to add/upload a track to a portable device that is currently playing, an error is reported that says basically the file is in use and can NOT be opened/access (sharing violation again).  This seems to be a common problem throughout MC when trying to upload, convert and/or burn a currently playing track...I don't think this a problem at all in MJ 8.0.

5. Even with Browser Integration enabled for the Download Manager, the 'Save with Download Manager' option does not show on the right-click menu (for IE).

Hi

I use download manager to download albums from eMusic.com. Basically, this works, but with a few hickups.

You can only download one album at the time. When downloading and you click on the next album download icon on the web page, Download Manager crashes. Adding the URL manually, same story.

The second thing is the naming of the files. My Emusic-setting for downloading is #Tracknumber - Trackname.
When the download is initiated, all tracks are shown in a correct manner. When Download Manager saves the files to disk, it saves with filename "01 - <trackname>" for the tracks 1-9. Then "02- <trackname>" for the tracks 10-19 and so on.

Last night was the first time I've used MC9 for a few weeks to do anything other than synch my iPod. I noticed a couple of things that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread. Apologies if you already know about them.

1. The scroll bars don't work properly. When you click on the scoll bar it goes mad and always scrolls down to the bottom of the list instead of scolling down by 1 page. The only way I could scroll down a small amount was to use my mouse wheel or to use the arrows at the top and bottom of the scroll bar.

2. In the smartlist wizard I got lots of graphical artifacts overlaying the lists when I used the scrollbar. Here's an example:

3. There is no way to point an album/track at a specific cover art file.

Bug or Hidden Feature:
1. This morning somehow MC reset all my Content View columns to include *only* Name, Album, Artist and Filename...all the other columns (lots of them) were somehow disabled.  All I remember doing before the disappearance was 1) inserting an audio CD, 2) holding down the Shift-key (to avoid Auto-Play) and 3) looking at Options and scrolling/selected the options icons (on the left) with the Shift-key held down.  Is there some hidden feature in options that will reset the enabled columns (to just those 4 listed) if you have the Shift-key held down?

Maybe this will help in the hunt...

If I look at the iPod, fewer columns display than when looking at the Media Library. If I adjust a column width when looking at the iPod, MC9 updates some global column width table to a) only the columns on the iPod, and b) the column widths of the iPod.

Please

I would really like to see each entry in the Tree on the left have its own Column Width Table definitions. If the Column Width Table of an entry had not been customized, it would use its parent's (and so on up the Tree). I believe the Default Sort Order should be specific to the tree entry you're looking at, also. Music and Images just sort differently.

This product - MC9 - with its multimedia approach to life, truly needs this feature. Bitrates, Replay Gain, etc. should be turnable-offable for the Images part of the Tree, while Height/Width are turned for Audio, etc. It seems that the more one uses MC, the more one needs this capability.

Another example of the value of this: I want totally different columns than Artist or Composer for images. But I'm reluctant to add them, because I have so many columns enabled for audio. If Column/Width/Sort definitions were "per tree entry", I could set up unique categories for each media type, but have efficient use of the right window. Re-using "Artist" for "Subject" in images is a bit confusing.

Bug reports

1. I am using Custom 1, Custom 2 and Custom 3. The names I've chosen appear in the Column Headers, but if I right-click the header bar, the context menu contains "Custom n", not the names I chose in Tools / Options / Tree & View.

2. Statistics - Artist/Album uses the field that groups under (Multiple Artists). That isn't useful in statistics; "(Multiple Artists) - The Avengers Soundtrack / 4" provides no usable Artist information.

3. The Sort Headers don't work in Statistics. This is what I'm dealing with:

With >1000 Artists and >1000 Albums, scrolling down the list to see who was how many is tedious and uninformative.

4. I believe there needs to be a pure Artist statistic, which leads to...

Suggestion: Those Stat definitions remind me a lot of View Schemes. How NICE it would be if you could populate the Stat definitions from the View Schemes (with a couple extras like Overview), and generate the entry names using the items selected in the View Scheme. Then you wouldn't have to figure out what Stat definitions the world needs (and write them); we could all set up our own! I would even set up View Schemes I never use for viewing, only for Stat summaries.

Hmmm... now that I've written this, it seems so obvious that a person would want to see Stats with the same outlook they'd implement in View Schemes. The Stats should even use the Search qualifiers so we get exact stats for each View Scheme's selected files and structure.

Bugs:
1. I attempted to play a DVD (using WinDVD) and MC was blocking all 'access' to my DVD-Rom drive.  WinDVD, MC and Windows Explorer could not/would not recognize that I had inserted a DVD.  I simply stop MC and immediately WinDVD and Windoes Explorer could 'see' the DVD (and play it).  This is the same behaviour I experience after a CD burn using MC (CD drives are unaccessible)...I have not burned a CD today though.  It appears MC is somehow locking everybody including itself out of accessing CD/DVD-Rom drives after 'some' action.

I am unable to install the LowerRight skin.  Download proceeds ok, but fails with 'INSTALLSKIN action failed.'

Bug-ish:

In File Properties, the "Apply Changes", "Discard Changes", and "Undo/Redo" choices are all enabled at all times.

"Apply/Discard" should only be enabled if I've made changes that haven't already been applied. "Undo/Redo" should be enabled based on the Undo stack contents.

Tres chic:
    Alt+Enter   -->  Apply and close
   Esc           -->  Discard and close
   Ctrl+Z       -->  Undo
   Ctrl+Y       -->  Redo

Has the subject of Parental Controls ever come up?

I have my song and photo libraries on a network server so the family can access them. I have kids, 8 & 11. There are songs (e.g. Nine Inch Nails - Closer) and images (Amsterdam RLD) that I want to keep in the collection but I don't want the kids to access.

While right now is certainly not the time to address this, perhaps you could be thinking about file-level Parental Controls for the future? Multimedia file management makes this even more important.  thx, Randy

It has come up.  People have suggested password protecting certain sections.

Right now, you can run two different libraries.

JimH:
when can we expect version 101?
I'm hoping 101 will correct the bug that prohibits you from making quick changes to file properties without having to open up each file's properties window.
Thanks!

I know you guys are working hard, but I agree with the above sentiments--if we could just get a quick fix on the ability to change the file fields, it would be a major help; can't really do much with MC 9 until that's fixed....

It should be fixed shortly.  Maybe today.  If not, then tomorrow.

ATI TV Wonder USB, MC9.100, XP, 2.5GHz, 512MB

Bugs:

1. Started MC. Clicked "TV". Double-clicked "Channel 4". Windowed display shows channel 40 although ch 4 is definitely playing; left arrow goes to 31, another left arrow goes to 30 (not in list) and things hang/slow down.

2. Big one: there are now audio drop-outs while watching TV. No problems whatsoever under MJ8. Tried bandwidths from 1Mb to 6Mb... at 6Mb the duration of the drop-out is shorter. Note Task Manager in the image: never was the CPU or memory taxed. Yet there was one drop-out about every grid tick during the monitored period.

3. Bug? PrintScreen and pcAnywhere don't capture the video image.
