Title: Migrating MC 34 from Win10 PC to new Win11 PC with new location for media
Post by: seth-jmc on May 17, 2025, 04:13:11 pm
I apologize for posting a topic for which there are already tons of posts, but none seem to address the latest version of MC.

My current machine is running Windows 10 and the media files are on an external SSD. My new Windows 11 machine has a 2 TB SSD C: drive and I intend to keep the media files there.

I have seen the wiki page at https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Moving_Files but I do not want to use the "Copy Library and Files from a Server" because that requires both old and new computers be online at the same time, and I will be using the monitor, keyboard, and network connection that I am using for the old computer with the new computer.

The most relevant post on this topic is from 2017:

Is this still relevant? Are there any additional steps or changes to the steps?

Thanks for any guidance!

One of the experts may have better ideas but I would do it in two steps:

1) Backup your library on the Win 10 pc then connect the external SSD to the new Win 11 pc and restore the backup with the media files in the same path/drive then test to make sure all is well. Once you have successfully tested, do a new Library backup.
2) Once this is done you can either move the files using the MC34 Rename, Move, Copy functionality to move the files to the desired location OR close MC34, move the media files to the desired new location in Windows then open MC34 and use the Rename, Move, Copy functionality to Find and Replace then change the Path to the new location then test. Once you have successfully tested, do another Library backup.

In my experience, doing one change at a time then testing is much safer than doing all the changes then testing because then you know which change broke something.
