Title: Lost Theater View customization
Post by: greynolds on May 17, 2025, 05:00:54 pm
Hi,

I've been putting off upgrading for too long, but had purchased a license for version 32 back when it first came out.  I received a notice a few days ago that version 30 has fallen out of support for getting movie and TV data, so I'm kind of forced to upgrade at this point.  I will purchase a version 34 license at some point, but am trying to avoid spending money right now due to finances (was part of a layoff back in August...) - once employment has been secured again, I'll upgrade to 34 (assuming I can get past the issue I ran into upgrading to 32).

After installing version 32 and restoring my license, many of my Theater View customizations are lost.  The File Info Panel templates that display details about a selected movie, TV show, etc. that I had put a lot of work into seem to be reset to the defaults while the views themselves were preserved.  It will be painful to go back and forth between version 30 and version 32 to transfer these settings over, so did I miss a step in upgrading?  Is there a simple way to get my views all back to the way I had set them up in version 30?

A library backup in 30 and restore in 32 doesn't work - the new defaults in 32 seem to stick.  I get that there were some changes made in the newer versions to enhance Theater View, but I had the info panels set up with the info that I want to see.  I really hope I don't need to redo all of that effort.  Sigh...

I was able to transfer the settings from 30 to 32 by copying the info panel views, 1 by 1, to the clipboard and pasting them into the info panel views on 32.  I renamed the new default views and adjusted the view priorities so that my views take precedence for now.  As time allows, I'll look into switching to and customizing the new default views.

I think MC did make a backup of your theaterviews when you upgraded to MC32. Look at MC's library/backup directory. You can also then set MC to use your own custom config file (probably better to use different naming than stock so it won't be replaced) in the theater view settings so that MC doesn't overwrite your changes again if you update MC

Oh wow, thank you Jim!  I was not expecting that, but I really appreciate it.  I'll move any related follow up into the version 34 forum.

Yeah, it definitely creates that backup.  Copy/pasting my info panel views from version 30 seems to have mostly resolved things.  There are a few minor things like some of my tooltip images used for displaying various things like G, PG, R ratings or 720P, 1080P, 2160P resolutions are showing up as tiny images, but I'm sure I can resolve those issues.

My plan is to merge my custom changes into the new defaults as there are probably some things I want from the new default info panels.  The good news is that I currently have lots of free time to spend on it...

I have successfully upgraded to 34 without any new issues so far.  It didn't reset my custom changes again, so it looks like that was pretty much a one time thing.  If I need any further assistance, I'll start a new thread in the version 34 forum.

Thanks for the help!
