First, my apologies. I first posted my query in the forum for version 8. Only just after did I clue in to this forum. Please bear with me as I am new to this interface.
I read the thread regarding the troubles with new beta downloads and expiring versions, which is connected to my post, which I have included below. Now that I have read other people's concers, I'm wondering, can I not simply go back to the beta version I had before, which worked wonderfully, now that I've purchases a license?
For reference, this was my previous post in the wrong forum (version 8 forum):
"I just purchased Media Center 9 beta after having successfully run the demo version for 1 month. The demo ran smoothly with no errors.
When it warned me that my month was up and I went to purchase it, I noticed that the interface was slightly different. Perhaps it's a slight upgrade from what I was using before.
In any case, after purchasing and downloading and installing, it opened alright and loaded my list of MP3s. However, when I attempted to play a music file, it gave me a warning that my sound card was not configured correctly. I closed this window and another one with a duplicate message immediately appeared. I closed this window, then I got a window that warns of a "Visual C++ Runtime error" and by closing this window, the program shuts down.
When I try to restart the program, it gives me a warning saying "this program is not configured correctly for the current user" and will not start.
I attempted to reinstall Media Center 9, but the exact same process repeated over again.
I'm running Windows XP."
Thanks
Dave

did you ever figure out what version of MJ9 you installed?
-
I believe the beta that worked was 90084
Dave
-
that one is kind of old, it may have expired
this is the latest most stable build 9.0.88
http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/download.html
see if that helps.
-
I WANT the old one. I have tried the more recent ones, and they are LESS stable, as I have described in the first posting of this thread.
-
9.0.88 is the most stable, anything older is not aval for download.
the other versions are 9.0.89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94
and they are not stable
-
Wow. Not trying to be dramatic or anything, but not only was 9088 no more stable for me, it actually crashed my computer. Turned it off faster than pressing the restart button. Quite literally.
Y'know, if the people who make this software are reading this, I really just want to listen to music, not spend my time in an on line chat forum. Suddenly I'm in a world of build numbers that I don't want to know about. It's starting to make me grouchy. And it's frustrating because the demo I used for the last month - 9084 or whatever it was - worked fine. So fine that I was willing to pay money for it. Right now it feels like I spent 35 dollars to STOP it from working.

Then you should really stick to media jukebox 8 for now untill the final version of 9 is out. This is what being a beta tester is all about. You get to test the latest and greatest, but you also get to discover all the bugs.
-
If you want to roll back to a previous build you have to delete some files in your windows/system (or susyem 32 if using XP) directory or reinstalling an old version will crash like anything. I got a Stop error when I tried before deleting the files. Check out the bug re[ports for the last two builds and it tells you which files to delete then reinstall 9.0.88

I paid 35 bucks for this beta. I've beta tested before, but never paid for it, so I assumed that they would at least give me the stability that I enjoyed in my initial trial. If I get no guaruntees whatsoever, then I'd like my money back, please.

You'll get the stability when the final build is out. Believe me J River software is very stable. At the moment they have made major changes that is why things are shaky. Cut them slack and carry on testiing and things will improve

this was at the time of 9.0.84
Once apon A Time
This is beta software -- some things don't work, some things may crash, and your database and tags may not be totally safe.
Then Booboo heard a noise and went out side
Many things will crash and not work. If that worries you, please wait for a couple of weeks.
And Everyone Lived Happly Ever After.

Thank you for posting in much bigger letters. Everything is so much clearer now.
Look, I don't think I'm being nuts here. I was using a piece of software that worked perfectly. That was the software that I wanted to purchase. Nothing on the web site made it clear that what I would be purchasing is a string of builds and not be able to get the build that I was using before.
When I was first using the software, I didn't even know it was a beta, I downloaded it from a link from an e-mail message.
When I discovered it was a beta, just before purchasing, I figured, "Okay, well, it works fine so what the heck", figuring that what I would get was a simple unlock for what I was already using. Nothing written anywhere on the site gives any indication that a user will have to move from one build to the next whether they want to or not.
I have beta tested before, and when I did, moving from build to build was optional. One got a notice that the new build was available, and one downloaded it, and if it didn't work, one went back to the previous version.
In this case, what build you get is not made apparent on the download page (It simply says "version 9"), and I can't go back to a previous build.
And look, this cost money! 35 bucks is a lot of money for software like this, especially when there are competitors like Winamp and Windows Media Player offering ftheir players for free. I see the value which potentially makes this software better, but not 35 dollars better if I also have to put up with this out of control beta situation.
There are a lot of inconsistencies here, and no amount of user loyalty or large caps letters is going to convince me that this is a perfectly normal situation.
The bottom line for me is: either beta test for free and then no one can complain, or charge money and offer some quality assurance. You can't have it both ways. If I don't see a version that I can use within the next few days, I will insist on my money back.

Dave,
Please try today's build. 9.0.95. It's good.
We've gone through a rough stretch these last three weeks. Vacations and a thorough overhaul of MC to accomodate international character sets have set us back, but I think it will be much smoother now.
Once you have a build that's working, don't upgrade until we release.
Thanks for your patience.

Jim,
Thanks for your prompt reply, and I hope 9095 will work. However, it 9095 the build I will get if I go to http://www.musicex.xom/mediajukebox/download.html? It says the version available there is 9088.

It does seem stable.
Don't think other users don't have the same feeling you are having, Me included (I am human). I just may not express them because I know JimH and His programmers will get it right.
I have been a user for 4 versions and they always get this package as stable as they can and all options working (for most people).
I do understand your feelings however. I just want you to give them a chance, thats all.

Whoops!
Nevermind, I just saw the posting with the correct download address in the other thread.
(Mental note: don't write reply so darn quick...)

look at the first message at this link.

*sigh*
Sadly, 9095 is just as unstable as other versions. First tells me:
"There was an error starting playback. Make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it is properly configured in Media Jukebox's playback options. (Double check the output mode, output device, and output bitpepth)"
I click "OK" and immediately I'm presented with a Microsoft "Send Error Report" window saying "Media Core has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
I click "Don't Send" (because who trusts Microsoft?), and Media Center goes down.
Bummer.

you can turn this off in Windows XP
You May Have other problems.
Have you ever uninstalled MJ? if not you might want to try. and allow it to delete the registry entries
then make sure "c:\program files\J river" has been removed. if it is not removed you can rename it or just delete it. yes you will lose any play lists smart lists if you had any. and will need to re-build the library.
then re-install MJ9
-
Have I ever uninstalled MJ? Oh yeah... uninstalled using the control panel, uninstalled using the uninstall program that comes with MJ, I've uninstalled MJ8, I've uninstalled MJ 9, I've reinstalled them, renamed them... you name it, I've done it. Now, I can't tell you in what order I did any of that, but I've been through a million permutations of installing and uninstalling all sorts of builds.
Keep in mind, MJ8 and MJ9 (9084) didn't have any issues with my sound card set up. Which, by the way, is a USB connection to my Kenwood stereo.

I wonder if they changed something.
I don't know anything about USB sound
