Ok...I just had to vent on this bug in MJ/MC that's been there since FOREVER...and it drives me nuts day-in and day-out....
It has to do with MJ/MC remembering (caching) file details after you've removed them from MJ/MC and then added them back (not imported...just playing...still, importing doesn't fix it either). Basically, if I'm downloading a track or getting a track FTP'ed to me and I decide to listen to it before it has finished downloading, MJ/MC just refuses to ever see the 'new' file details after it's been completely downloaded. So, I had it to Playing Now, listen to the portion received so far, delete it from Playing Now, add it again and MJ/MC remembers the old file info (size, duration, no id3V1 tag, etc)...ARGH. No amount of refreshing cures MJ/MC. You have to either rename the file or move it to another directory to get MJ/MC to 'see' the new info. Importing it doesn't fix the problem either...MJ/MC still remembers it's first contact with the file. Restarting MJ/MC doesn't fix the problem...MJ/MC just continues to piss me off.
So, can somebody please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, and one more please fix this bug in MJ/MC? Seems like it should be a siimple to fix. Again, I've not even imported it yet.
Also, I've noticed the MC My Computer explorer sucks (is bugged) at refreshing the MC My Computer contents. If you delete a folder outside of MC and then refresh MC (F5), MC doesn't pick up the changes.
Thanks...continue on....LOL.

can't you use the update from file option in the Lib maint?
that should work i would thinnk.

KingS,
Try it on files not IMPORTED...as I said...it not work! Plus, based on past experience with this function and imported files...I bet MJ/MC just updates tag-related info and not physical file characteristics (like file size and last mod date).
Plus, JRiver should just fix the bug(s) and I should not have to jump thru 3 hoops just to get things to work (which in this case doesn't work anyways).

Is this in the current bug thread?
-
Is now....thanks.

We originally added automatic external change detection to MC 9, but it was too slow, so now it's in the right-click menu:
Tools -> Update Library From Tags (if changes detected)
or
Tools -> Update Library From Tags (always)
Maybe we need to automatically run that on (re)import...

Again...these are NOT imported but sitting in Playing Now (deleted and re-added...over and over)...that's just one way I see the problem. Seems like choosing Refresh should refresh...otherwise, what's the point?
Also, update from tags does NOT imply that MC will update file's physical attributes (file size, last mode date, duration, etc)...will it?

It's a speed thing. If tags were reanalyzed every time you hit F5, the program would be unusable.

It should update everything.
The solution is probably as simple as having MJ autmatically check for external changes after certain actions. (like adding files to playing now)
Thanks.

Thanks Matt...I think you'll figure it out.
Again, my whole point is this:
If I play files in MC that are NOT imported, MC should not be remembering things about the file...it's not imported. So, adding to Playing Now from Windows Explorer or MC's My Computer (of non-imported tracks), deleting them from Playing Now and re-adding later (not importing)...MC should always refresh from disk...not some mystery cache MC is storing somewhere (for files not even imported...ever).

We cache the files for up to two weeks, because it make a huge difference in areas like "My Computer" where files are never imported.
I think caching is good as long as we check for external changes (which is really fast) once in a while.
We'll tune this up once we get a working Unicode build out...

Matt...kewl!!
Sounds like a user-selection option might be in order for those of us who don't want MC remembering anything about non-imported files. I'd like to control my destiny...I can live with MC being slow in this area if it means I always get the latest (correct) file information from the actual file as stored on disk.
Anyways...thanks for the attention!!

I'd just like to mention that I agree with ZRocker ... an option to determine if MC should remember non imported files would be great.
I don't want my MP3 DB being tainted with pesky .AVI's :D

With the way I organize music, it would be ideal for me to select my media directories, and have a one step process to scan for additions and removals.
Just my 2 cents. :)
