Title: Media Center 9.0.87 beta (UPDATED)
Post by: Matt on December 05, 2002, 01:20:50 pm
Media Center 9.0.87 beta is available.

This is beta software -- some things don't work, some things may crash, and your database and tags may not be totally safe.

If you're sure you want to continue, you can download here:

[build 87 was pulled because it crashes when MC opens Playing Now.  A build of V9 that will work is on the downloads page  -- JimH]

Changes (9.0.87)

1. Fixed: Browser scheme groups weren't being cleared when switching / unloading libraries.
2. Fixed: Unanalyzed files were not being handled properly when calculating auto replay gain preamp.
3. Fixed: Package Installer could fail to install some hand-held plugins properly.  If you've experienced problems, please try to reinstall the handheld plugin.
4. NEW: Direct Sound playback configuration now allows the selection of a device.
5. Fixed: Image height and width were not being imported for .jpg files. (use Tools -> Update DB from File(s) to correct old files)
6. Fixed: Media Jukebox could crash when analyzing cooked OGG files. (like ones that EAC wrongly put an ID3v2 tag on)
7. Fixed: "Check for Updates" works again. (under the Help menu)
8. Fixed: Reconciled v8 and v9 MJAutomation changes for SDK users. (new .TLB included)

Changes (9.0.86)

1. Changed: Brought back Media Jukebox 8 style "Recently Imported."
2. NEW: Added "implied" search keyword based on the field name -- this is the recommended way to build searches to ensure that user customization won't break anything. (i.e. [artist]=dylan will always work)
3. Fixed: Editing a preset field could corrupt the database by changing the field's data type to "string". (sorry, you'll need to re-import or restore from a non-corrupt library)
4. Changed: Right-click to insert a column now adds the column next to where the click occurred, instead of at the beginning.
5. NEW: Playlist groups now remember their view mode. (delete auto smartlists, restart, then clicking on the root of auto smartlists will be fast)
6. Fixed: Several bugs with playlist view mode operation.
7. Fixed: After customizing DB fields, all column customization would be lost.
8. Changed: Default column layout more logical.
9. NEW: Added "Revert to Default Columns" to column header right-click menu.
10. Fixed: Windows uninstaller was unable to find MC uninstaller.
11. Changed: After fresh install, content tooltips are off by default.
12. Fixed: YADB track lookup was only working for 1 in 10 files.
13. Fixed: "Media Jukebox" (or other custom field text) could sometimes erroneously get imported as the comment field.
14. Changed: Added progress to "Saving tag changes..." wait message.
15. Changed: Added progress to tag removal tool.
16. Changed: Further improved TV options.
17. Changed: Improved YADB track lookup engine -- more likely to find matches.
18. Fixed: Media Center was not working correctly with external tools.
19. Changed: Analog sound recorder now uses YADB for track name lookup.
20. Fixed: Sound recorder "Add track" dialog was messed up.
21. Fixed: In CD ripping settings, "Choose sound" button wasn't working.
22. Fixed: Default encoding rate was incorrect on new installations.
23. NEW: Added "Automatic" replay gain adjustment mode -- plays the playlist as loud as possible without clipping. (but still at the same volume)
24. Fixed: Pre-setup unpacker said "Media Jukebox" instead of "Media Center".
25. Changed: Made sound recorder buttons keyboard selectable for automated recording.
26. NEW: Media Center has multi-zone playback!!! (check out "Player Zones" under the far right button in the lower-left player area)

For more information about multi-zone playback, check here: http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=beta;action=display;num=1039130574

We're still getting more bugs reported than we can fix each build. Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build.

Thanks for your help and support.

23. NEW: Added "Automatic" replay gain adjustment mode -- plays the playlist as loud as possible without clipping. (but still at the same volume)

Explanation: If you play a loud rock album (like Aerosmith or Metallica), replay gain ends up turning the whole thing down a lot. (like 15 dB)  That's silly since ALL the files are getting turned down.  You could just turn down the files that are actually louder than the others.

That's the idea behind the "automatic" replay gain mode.  It makes everything as loud as safely possible while also making everything sound the same volume.

It's a little hard to explain, but it's a pretty nice feature -- especially for things like burning a mix CD where you want it as loud as possible but also all the same volume.

This is a little difficult to explain, but i think there's a bug in the media library tree when switching between libraries.  I guess the best way to illustrate what I'm running into is with a hypothetical example.
If you start out with a library "I" that has view schemes: A, B, C and from there load a library "II" with view schemes B, C, T, the tree will show library "II" as having view schemes A, B, C, T

If you quit out of MC and then restart the program, view scheme T will not be in the tree.  Likewise, deleting T from library "II" works ... but it'll pop right back up the next time you load library "II" from library "I"

Matt,

I really like what you did with RG. I'm gonna have to test it out later. However, is it possible to add just an "Automatic" mode along with "Automatic based on current playlist" to adjust for every song?

If I load say all of media library/some wierd playlist, the RG value doesn't change since there would be a song with very low/high values.

Adding this functionality would make me a happy camper.

Open bugs for this version:

- Exporting a playlist to m3u uses playlist.m3u as name in stead of the playlist name
- Playing a stream web station, MC adds a playlist and imports the stream as a file.
- Left tree collapses on startup
- Limit to Minutes does not work (e.g. limit to 1 minute does not return my files underneath 1 minute)
- Uploading more than 100 files to my Handheld device gives an error at the end "error opening file" and not all files are uploaded then
- When sending e.g. 5 mp3's to external tool MP3Gain, it opens 5 times MP3Gain i.s.o. Adding those 5 files to 1 MP3Gain

3. Fixed: Editing a preset field could corrupt the database by changing the field's data type to "string". (sorry, you'll need to re-import or restore from a non-corrupt library)

Bug:
1. Well, I deleted all and reimported...still got string fields.  I created a new library (empty) and imported everything again and still string.  In Options, Tree & View...it says Duration and File Size are (for example) string type data fields.  Now, really...how do I fix this??

Bugs (still):
1. With data CD burn list displayed, renaming folders in the Org Tree of the burn list will always crash MJ (after just 2 or 3 renames).

2. Sometimes loading a saved burn list scheme will crash MJ...maybe if files in the scheme are no longer imported in MJ.

3. With a single file selected (anywhere in MJ), the status line does not work like it did in MJ 8.0 and prior.  Now it just show the info for the currently selected file...it used to show you the total of all the files currently in view...so, with MJ 9, you  have to 'painfully' unselected everything in the view to see the total for the viewed list of files.  The MJ 8.0 way was far more friendly...with one file we can already see the stats because of the detail in the content tree view anyways.

4. The burn list CD stats (%, MB used, MB left) does not update correctly at all while building a burn list.

5. Using the MJ internal burner, IS NOT GOOD...when created data CDs it removes the last 4096 bytes of each burned track and inserts it at the beginning of the next track to be burned...WTH!?  Thus, the final audio and ID3v1 tags show up at the beginning of the next track (viewed in a binary/hex editor).

6. Usually, cancelling a CD burn (via Cancel button) after a successful burn will cause MJ to crash.

Request:
1. Can we get the 'generic' CD burner back (as say a third burner choice)?  I liked the way it worked...I mean it could burn data CDs with no problem (no currupt, useless files) and I used it for the a specific purpose that the GoldenHawk burner doesn't satisfy (ie, GH burner does not burn the directory in folder/filename order like the generic burner did/does).

Thanks! And the gain does change on a track-by-track basis in "Automatic", because "automatic" is for the adjustment, which gets added to the track's replay gain value.  If I'm missing the boat, start a new thread, and we'll get it figured out.

5. NEW: Playlist groups now remember their view mode. (delete auto smartlists, restart, then clicking on the root of auto smartlists will be fast)

It's the bar at the bottom when you look at a playlist.  We'll address other view-specific things like sorting, columns, etc. before release.

Thanks ;D (and we'll try not to disappoint)

Make sure Wave control is not muted, and volume not too low.

When starting time-shift a message comes along the bottom of the screen that says "a suitable codec could not be found. Video will be recorded uncompressed. I checked the recording settings, and the JRiver codec for time-shift is the one selected.

Maybe the JRiver Video Codec is not properly installed and/or not registered.

Can you find the file MJVideoEncoder.Ax in the TV subfolder and manually register it?

Scanning for channels still "seems" to lock up after 20 or so channels. If left to its own devices, it eventually fills the list, but it seems like it's locked up until it finishes

I am aware of this. It seems more like a window repainting problem.

1. Still not full albums are reported to be full if you have only 1 track and it happens to be #1.

2. When searching for cover art, the search is done for track "artist" instead of "Album artist"

3. When an audio CD is not recognized by YADB, it enters the database as Audio CD(1) even after you change properties.

4. Some low bitrate (<=112) songs can not be analyzed. Is there something you can do about it?

5. Can't delete "Auto smartlists (Video & Image)" it returns everytime I re-open MC.

Not fixed: NetRemote crashes when opening the library panel in MC9. Might be a Web Remote bug, but it actually worked for a few minutes when I had the PPC in it's cradle. Then it went down again. Go figure!
It is more variable with this version than the last, that crashed every time. Now it happens totally random, except for that I managed to get it to crash every time when having NetRemote on a page with feedback (of track name, number and time) and then changing to one of the other zones (the bathroom). Strangely enough it did not happen when changing to the other zone (the bedroom). 8)

1. When marking more than one song to lookup in YADB the search is done (I think) only to the last song marked and returns an answer (usually) of 0-10 files found.
If it does find a result it puts the results on the first song marked (though it found the answer of the last).

2. The Track# recieved from YADB is all screwed up, I usually get a four digits number...

3. Again requesting an explanation on BPM/Intensity/RG and all the other new fields. Thanks.

Post by: webtree on December 06, 2002, 03:53:03 am
Using the thumbnail view in MC9.0.86 I have a playlist with 3400 images in and some music, but the view took a thumbnail of the images, and this is stored in MC somewhere.  The images have since been altered, but the thumbnail is still the old image.  When playing the correct image is displayed, yet I cannot find any way of updating the thumbnail.

Both in the playlists and the media view the thumbnail is wrong.  If I go to properties in media view and look at the image there it is correct, with the wrong thumbnail.

Req: Also if you right click on the playlist of images there is play, but no show, if you select images in the main window and right click there is a show option.  Any chance of having a show option on the right click in the left pane on playlists or media view?

Regards
Mark

"Automatically Import into Library" still not working here.
A few builds ago, the entry would appear in the library after MC had been restarted, now even that does not happen. (I'm talking about d'clicking an .mp3 file in explorer here)

Cannot import .m3u files. D'clicking an m3u file in explorer opens up MC, and that is all, playlist is NOT mirrored in "playing now"

"Analyze Audio" is still replacing id3v2 comment field with the intensity value.

Nag box still refers to "Media Jukebox" btw ;)

BUG
  • Media Server, Options, General: 'Don Not Respond...'
    Should be 'Do Not Respond'.
  • Cannot find an option to allow me to specify the address for opening a Media Server connection - just tries to find them. It tells me:
    Invalid Media Server Information
nila.mshome.net:1234 (this computer is called nila).
bindi:80 (other computer is called bindi)

    It then fails to connect.

Media Servers are now cataloged in the library manager.  The search function is is broken as you've discovered but you add a new remote library manually with a location like "m01p://bindi:80" and it'll work.

Question:
If you are looking up say 500 tracks in YADB, and cancel after 42 for some reason, will it make changes to the first 40 which it has consulted about, (if it finds anything), and if so does it tell you about it anywhere.  Like it does when it is complete, found X or Y records.  Or are changes applied when it finishes the scan of all tracks, and cancelling will therefore cancel any changes pending?  I can't test it as it seems unable to find any of my 3500 tracks!

Req: Status check if lookup cancelled, (how many of the files searched if any were matched?)

P.S. Minor screen refresh issue when calling YADB.  It fixes itself after the first "consulting YADB" dialog at record 10.

BUG:

When I right click to pop up the TOOL menu, both in the TREE area and the LIST area, MC does not work.

a) After I right click, MC waits.  The MENU Bar changes to the default Window's style, the mouse cursor changes to a wait symbol, and then MC return to the default MENU Bar style of MC.  The Pop Up menu never appear.

b) The right click is very important because functions like MOVE/COPY files, or LOCATE files are only available on right click.  Can MJ put these functions in the TOOL button or at the MENU BAR as well.  When I use the Button or Menu Bar, I do not experience the problem.

c) The bug seems to be related to when the right menu is clicked, MC does some initialization or processing, and it runs into trouble.  The sympton for me is that the MC MENU BAR changes color or style.

1. I can't find this option

2. Even Using "update library (from tags - Always)" it does not give Image height and width.

deleting files then re-importing them does not fill in Image height and width

I see no change.

Height and width only apply to images, not audio files like mp3's.  Are you saying JPG's aren't getting their dimensions imported, or do you mean mp3 files? (we could maybe show height and width for the images inside an mp3, but it'd be kind of a tricky change, so we probably won't for now)

bennyd -- Limit to Minutes does not work (e.g. limit to 5 minutes does not return my files underneath 5 minutes)

well, I never thought about Just JPG's, since i would never use MC in it's current state for Images.

But If i have an MP3 with a internal or external Image why can't i get MC to see the Size? (other than you did not program it to do that).

The Cover Art I am refering to on My system are external images and I don't see why the external image could not be sized and the info be placed in size fields.

v.087 will immediately crash (runtime error) when jumping to the playing now if it is configured to use a visualization

I get the same error with .87 - The second i try to play with pictures (slide show) working i get a CTD (crash to desktop)

However - good news - both the PocketPC fix and the Image with and Height bug are fixed....

Thanks

This happens when I play a song and I have "None" selected as my "Display Plug-in".
Cover art showing = runs fine, no errors.

Note: That is the OPPOSITE of the above two posts, isn't it?

Visualisations need to be " pocketed " automatically
as they were in V8 on the main Splash Screen. They can be pocketed through the Program Menu so it's not so bad, really.

Nikolay,

In the Outback where I am we get ambient temperatures up to 45c to 55c at this time of year.
I am quite sure that this heat does affect my computer at times. It usually runs about 30c to 35c in our House even with the Air Conditioner on and in the Winter it's the exact opposite, down to -8c --12c. overnight and then back up to +35c during the day. It's a miracle the computer works at all sometimes.

I upgraded Media Center from version 9.0.84 to version 9.0.87.

When I did that I could no longer view Track info or Visualizations.  When You hit Play it would go to the Image veiwer in full screen.  If I tried switch to Trackinfo or Visualizations Media Center Crashed.

I have reloaded version 9.0.84 and got visualizations back but I would like to get some of the fixes yoou have done since that version.

Is there something I am doing wrong??  Has anyone elsehad this Problem?  I have not seen mention of it ina any of the posts.

Thanks

I shall be testing this tonite as I have quite a few Cds to encode and reburn.  had no touble with it before.
But tonite I shall be using .087.

I'll report back.

As we are both aware, db  is as important to sound reproduction as flour is to a good cake.

I should like to get involved in this discussion. I will need to put my " thinking cap " on first., so my article doesn't get too technical or too long ( easy for me, unfortunately )

In 9.0.87, I get an instant run-time error (as below, but drive c:\) as soon as I start to play any track.

Track continues to play, and visualization continues to function, until I close above message, followed rapidly by abort.

Problem goes away when I reinstall 9.0.86.

Little bug: Doing an "update library (from tags - always)" on a file that has been analyzed (has replay gain, bpm, etc.) results in the BPM value getting some extra zeros added to it. After updating some files, I've ended up with a lot of 98000 BPM songs and such.

Otherwise, .86 and .87 have fixed every other bug I've been worrying about lately...thanks a ton guys!

there's a way around this in the meantime for anyone who, like me, needs their daily ration of music ;)
Just shun Playing Now completely! if you don't switch automatically to playing now or full screen when clicking the play button (there is an option for this remember) it'll run fine. This means you lose playlist functionality, but if you load your entire playlist, you can then click any song in your media library and itll start playing.

Guess I spoke too soon: analyzing replay gain once again seems to have a memory leak and eats up all my RAM after about 10 files. It worked beautifully in .96 with all of my files.

this does not occur if nothing is playing. Seems to be a quite stable bug. (I mean bugwise).

I got 87 to work.  I took this from KingSparta's post in another thread and it worked fine... (I will add my comments to it as well)

Steps to Remove the Crash with 87:

1) Uninstall the old version and Reinstall 87 (I even cleaned out the install (removed) directory just in case)

2) Rename your cover art folder to anything else.

3) Open MC, go to Tool > Option File Naming and Locations and update your cover art path to the new folder.

All should be well now.  You may want to update your library as well but mine worked fine without it.

I am not sure that fixed it, since it now have the crash back.

i think it has somthing to do with playing now (maybe template)

it seems if you play from "Media Library" it's fine.

I agree with KingSparta now - I get the crash again.  But only about 40% of the time with the above changes.  The way i am running it is by plaing a play list then browsing to some images (digital camera pictures) and "show" 'ing them - seems to work for a while then will core dump.  Oh well.  I tried.

The first thing I did was uninstall, delete all MC directories and clean the registry.  The runtime error is not worth the effort to workaround, rename folders, etc.  I am sure they will fix it on Monday.

It definitely has to do with visualizations embedded in playing now.  Again, if you set display to play in a Window before playing media, it will not crash, but note that there will be no visualization playing in the Window regardless if you have it set to.

Bugs:

1. When pasting tracks to the Playing Now list (probably any list), MC always pastes the tracks at the desired position and then jumps & highlights the currently playing track (moving the focus)...that's not nice.  It be much nicer if MC left the position on the track that was selected/focused prior to the paste.  Try pasting a track to play every other time in a list of, say, 20 tracks using just the keyboard...argh...silly MC keeps moving the selection after every paste (Ctrl-V).

2. When you highlight and delete tracks in a playlist, MC deletes the selected tracks and highlights the same number of tracks that slide up and replace those tracks deleted (in the displayed list)....very confusing and annoying.

Another type of runtime error:

I connect to the Internet, insert an audio CD into the CD-ROM drive, and it kicks open MC (9.0.87). Music starts to play, then I get a Microsoft C++ Runtime Error Message box, which goes away when I click OK, but takes MC with it.

CD Playback Errors

Matt, when I play an audio CD on 9.0.87 I get a popping of "tccsk"ing sound. When I play back that same CD on Windows Media Player, it sounds fine. When I play back mp3 files I ripped using MC on MC, they sound fine.

I have this problem with the release before last of v8, but it went away when I updated to v9, but has now come back with this version.

System info same as previous post.

Let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks.

In addition to all the UNC (Universal Naming Convention) bugs that another user posted, there is also a MAJOR bug using UNC when ripping CD's.

I'm trying to rip a CD to a UNC path and it crashes the entire program every single time.  As soon as I restart and enter a drive letter path instead, it works fine.

I hope this one can be fixed soon.
