Title: Media Jukebox 9.0 beta 4...
Post by: Matt on November 13, 2002, 12:08:02 pm
Media Jukebox 9.0 beta 4 is available.

IMPORTANT-- This is beta software -- some things don't work, some things crash, and your database and tags may not be totally safe.

If you're sure you want to continue, you can download the preview here:

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaJukebox90077.exe

Changes

1. Fixed: Renaming tree items was disabled for database fields.
2. Fixed: Grouping schemes that showed individual items underneath didn't work properly for "unassigned" items.
3. Fixed: Several other grouping scheme related issues.
4. Fixed: Search wizard allows searching for empty fields. (i.e. genre=[])
5. Fixed: Search wizard would return "-" when selecting no fields, then exclude, then hitting OK.
6. Fixed: Search field="-" didn't do what field=- did. (it was range searching between the characters " and ")
7. Changed: Removed "get info from filename" option from the import dialog. (because it's easily available later in the tools menu)
8. Fixed: "Don't import short files (under 5 seconds)" option was not working.
9. Fixed: Media Player and XP don't understand unsynched ID3v2 tags, so MJ no longer uses unsynchronization.
10. Fixed: Update DB would remove all files from DB when selecting "Remove files that do not exist".
11. Fixed: AVI playback would not function after installing Media Jukebox.
12. Fixed: Disk writer was not working.
13. NEW: Added "break tracks" option to disk writer.
14. Changed: Beefed up "suppress silence" option to suppress leading and trailing silence. (makes better fades, and makes gapless mp3 playback possible)
15. Changed: MP3 plugin better for gapless playback.
16. Fixed: Media Jukebox could dead-lock when stopping playback under some rare situations.
17. NEW: Added "Listening To" button to toolbar.
18. Fixed: CD burning with "decode direct.." unchecked didn't show correct progress indication and could hang MJ.
19. Added: Synchronization capabilities for Handhelds (iPod specific for now).
20. Fixed: Column order and size saving when leaving Handheld view.
21. Fixed: Playing images would sometimes not start properly.

Keep in mind that at this stage, we're getting more bug reports than we can fix each build. Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build.

Thanks for your help, support, and patience.

what is an unsynchronised tag? could you (or anyone else) just give me a quick hint?

MP3 frames are identified by a certain sequence of bits.  Unsynchronization is a technique to make sure that identifier doesn't occur in the tag part of the file. (because a decoder would think it was in the audio part -- not the tag)  Media Jukebox should not be affected by this change -- it knows to skip the ID3v2 tag.

- Always when opening MJ, it says "Updating Media Jukebox Database" and the Playing now is always empty, also Playing now and Media library are always collapsed (whatever settings in the options are specified)

- When clicking on my portable drive, I get the error message : "Cannot find plug-in Portable Drives", when clicking OK on that box, MJ crashes

- When trying to write a CDR with playback settings selected, Writing goes fine until the end I get the error message : "No additional sense information". Then I cannot eject my CD anymore until I powerdown my PC and back on

Matt,

thanks for the quick reply.
So if I understand that right, with mp3 player that are not ID3V2 aware it could happen that playback starts with some static noise when not using unsynchronised tags?
but as probably every /modern/ mp3 player should be aware of ID3V2 tags no such problems shoud show up in every days usage.....

One of my mp3 files doesn't like RG. Has a positive value even after removing tags, reimporting, and reanalysing. Should I send for further analysis?

What is the listening to button supposed to do? All I get when I hit it is my registration info.

Listening To copies what you are listening to to the clipboard. It's accessible from the right click menu of Playing Now. The toolbar button should make it easier but I am too getting registration info.

Gapless playback is almost perfect

There are some files where there is a nearly imperciptible click, on others I can't hear it. Anyway, it's an excellent job and for me it's fine as it is.

Thanks guys  :)

Update: On a side note, the little click is on the resulting WAV too if I select Disk Writer. Maybe this helps.

A couple of builds ago we moved where settings are stored.  All MJ customization will be lost because of this change. (toolbar, settings, etc.)

Sorry.  It shouldn't happen again.

I am also experiencing the analyze feature's memory leak, as somebody mentioned in the previous beta 3 thread. I have experienced this problem throughout MJ 8 and now into 9. Up until this beta, it would usually analyze about 100-150 files before Windows (XP) would report an "out of virtual memory" error and my system would slow to a crawl leaving MJ stuck and forced to be quit. When I tried it tonight with beta 4, it got through 7 files before this problem occured. Any idea what's up? Here's my system info:

Ok, I've really got to get this off my chest! =)

Is this trend towards grouping settings and options in with the function that they affect just going to get worse?

Am I the only one who hates having to run a module or function to get at the settings for it?

Now I see that the encoding settings have moved from the "options" menu to the "settings" menu which is only available when ripping or converting. Augh!!!

(Can I get an AMEN??)

I agree with Mr X although in a nicely worded way :)

It's now alot harder to find alot of options for MJ.

I know your trying to re-do the options screen but I dont think removing options and putting them else where is the answer.

Everyone still wants all the options to be in the options window.

This is a known bug introduced in this release. It will be fixed in the next release. Sorry about that.

For others whose burners are working with MJ9, please post your system info in the thread "New MJ burner: does your drive work with it?". We'd like to hear about the drives that work as well as the ones that don't.

How do I connect to MJ Media Servers now ? (same prob as sstrick)

I did see the new Local Library in the library management .. Im guessing something BIG is coming down the pipe ...

Wouldnt it be SWEET if we could setup multiple remote libraries and be able to manage them all at the same time :) (pipe dream ? or next beta build ? )

I just installed MJ9.077. At the end it asked to restart windows. After to restart, it displayed that:

MJ 8.0 Install Wizard failed to install a necessary file.

Source: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\Setup\MJShellExt.dll
Destination: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\MJShellExt.dll

I clicked "OK" anyway and it is installed (I didn't check yet if there are some problem running it though).

There is a problem with licence.

Just want to say I'm impressed! Probably already aware
of the fact that 'Media Server' is mispelled in the [Tools]
menu. Currently "Medai Server"- V.77  8
