Title: Media Jukebox 9.0 Preview VII - A - Part two
Post by: Matt on September 26, 2002, 02:09:16 pm
There's an update version of the Media Jukebox 9.0 preview here, but FIRST PLEASE READ THIS:

IMPORTANT-- This is only a preview -- some things don't work, some things crash, and your data may not be safe. Don't use this preview with files that can't be replaced. If you don't consider yourself an expert with Media Jukebox, please wait for a later release. Backup your database (and files) before doing anything else.

If you're sure you want to continue, you can download the preview here:

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaJukebox90063.exe

Notable changes:

9.0.63
-Updated TV control -- rewind and fast forward should work
-Using Media Server would cause "failed to update tag messages" to be displayed
-Fixed a bug that could prevent the installation program from running on some systems
-Several minor skinning engine fixes / enhancements
-Several track info Image page enhancements (right click menu for picture, double-click to show picture, etc.)

9.0.62
-Lots of "Hairstyle" enhancements
-Media Server did not work
-Start->Update Web Pages could crash Media Jukebox
-Player wasn't feeding "auto-preamped" data to the visualization engine, so too much clipping was visible
-Fixed several oscilloscope bugs (could overflow, didn't render middle channel properly, etc.)

Keep in mind that at this stage in the game, we're getting more bug reports than we can fix each build. Please keep a list of bugs you find, and re-report anything that doesn't get fixed each build.

Thanks for your help, support, and patience.

To get to HairStyle, you need to be in Playing Now, go to full screen, then hit the menu key to the right of the space bar.

I like the PIP smaller, so I change this file:

C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox\FullSkins\J River\main.xml by using notepad

After <PIP

Change this line:
     Rect="2,27,70,88"
to:
     Rect="5,80,20,95"

The numbers represent percentages of the screen in this order:

left side of rectangle is x% from left side of screen
top is % from top of screen
right side is % from left side of screen
bottom is % from top of screen

If you get it wrong, MJ will loop until you use alt-ctrl-del.

We'll make this easier in another build.

When I scan the library, then click on a specific album it may or may not show TRACK 1 (ie. it's just not in the list of tracks for that album, even though the file is there).

If you then click the column header to sort by Track Number it magically appears.

Problem submitting CD...

Just entered all the Artist, Album & Track details for a CD which was not found in YADB. Right-click and selected "Submit to CD Database". Whammo! got an XML parse error, then it tries to reload the album info, says "Not found", and I lose all the entered data.

Tried this twice with the same CD, no luck.

- Playing now list doesn't follow the now playing song in the list (the icon follows but you have to manually scroll down to see what's playing)
- When deleting a file in playing now (with SHIFT DELETE), the now playing song is out of focus (was a bug in 8.0 as well but was fixed)

- When clicking on my NEO Jukebox in Handhelds, it gives an error and MJ crashes (see screenshot)

I searched but couldn't find this, so I'm asking again... :)  Is there any way to make the views "Sticky"? What I mean is I want the Audio view to be tracks and the Picture\Video view to be thumbnails.  Possible?  Thanks guys!

When You Have Images (Cover Art) in the File and the field States "Inside File" you can not sort the field so that one one half you can have all the files that do not have an image.

and then all without "Inside File" could be selected and then you can do a Loose Cover Art Find.

Is there another way to select all files that do not have cover art inside the file?

when converting from MJ8 to MJ9 i guess it is not 100%

i never tried playing them and was messing with the cover art.

but when i went to play them it always said on every file "Select File To Play"

well i dumped the data base by deleting all files and re-importing.

same thing.

i uninstalled MJ9

re-installed MJ9

re-Imported

now it works.

ver9 (all vers so far) crash when start, right click, or hover over the visualization window (if full vis window, crash immediately upon start or sometimes until hover cursor over, if playing as window in TrackInfo, will play, but right-click will crash)

If it's any of my Vis engine settings, I'm going to have to hack them from the registry, 'cause there's no way for me to get to them in MJ.

This problem was fixed once in MJ8 if i remember correctly.

I'm rescinding these 2 problem reports.

When I went back to the Adaptec 4.71 API layer, the problems went away so I think the problem is with the internal ASPI layer.   Now that I think about it, the last V8 I had on this machine was just before the addition of the internal ASPI which probably explains why it worked then.   In fact, I just checked and 8.0.379 with internal ASPI enabled gives me the problems.

Title: Strange problem when getting album info from YADB
Post by: Robert Taylor on September 29, 2002, 05:04:52 am
Sometimes, when MJ9 goes to retrieve an albums details from YADB, it seems to start the (retrieval) process twice. Sometimes this results in the track listing showing each track twice. (Hittin F5- Refresh clears this in the track info section).

However, when you then try to rip the tracks, the following error appears

---
Failed to get track info:
The device name is already being used as an alias by this application. Use a unique alias.
Would you like to keep trying further tracks?

Yes / No
---

Hitting yes tries the next track with the same result.

Hitting No results in another dialog box:

---

Media Jukebox failed to update the following files:

---

The only way to get around this is to stop and restart MJ. It seems that more often than not when you try to exit, MJ crashes (u get the windows crash notification window popup).

When Selecting "Find Wizard" And If You Select BPM, a list of BPM rats are shown in wrong order

100-155 then listed is 36 to 99

maybe adding a "0" or two to the front of 99 and below might help

Would it be better if the ANALYSE SONGS & the COVER ART were writing the tags to files AS it analyses, rather than wait until it is done ...

That way if it errors (which it often does, due to bugs and sometimes due to problems with the files (read only, 0 byte, etc)) that it could at least have part of the files written ?

Speaking of BPM (King),
Anyone know why I would have selections for
10720-10739
12680-12699
13600-13619
1420-1439
8980-8999

I created a View Scheme based on BPM ... and I get a lot of normal grouping 40-60, etc ... but then at the bottom of the list I get these ... and they are all EMPTY ... no files listed in the groupings ...

EDIT:  I did a quick resort of my media library and noticed that there ARE BPMs in these ranges ... but they werent showing up in the grouping ... SO, I checked on some other groupings .. like 140-160 and found that there were only 3 files listed in the view scheme for this grouping, but when i view the entire library and just look for files in this range, I find MANY MORE than 3 !!!

GOT IT ... Bug!
When creating a BPM view scheme ... when it creates groupings (I based mine on 20s ... 40-60, 60-80, etc) ... It is only listing songs that are EQUAL to the MIN value ...

ie, if you have a grouping for BPM 40-60, it only shows songs for 40 BPM EXACTLY !!!!

NOTE: The same problem occurs with the DECADE Scheme!

Bugs

Tree View : Album Artist is not able to use Groupings (A-C, D-F, etc.)

Slideshow : If, while watching a slideshow, I doubleclick a file in Playing Now to display it at just the right moment when MJ is going to transition to a new a file, it will skip the file I double clicked and display the one following it.

Playing Now : The Playing Now bars show Image as the Display Plugin Type and NA near the Image Change buttons. Shouldn't this show the name of the currently displayed image\video? It doesn't always stay updated for visualizations the way it should, either.

Content View : Sometimes this doesn't refresh as quickly as it should. I opened a file in Properties, edited it's Name, Artist, and Album and then clicked on another file in the list. The first file didn't update until I hit Refresh.

When viewing images and listening to music, if Playing Now contains a video, playing that video will clear all images from slideshow.

Hairstyle will only play files in alphabetical order, rather than track order or, better yet, the sort order specified in Options.

MJ has a toolbar button available for Recently Imported that currently has no real function.

Ever since Tree View got the ability to display individual items in the tree, Quick Play, and now Hairstyle act all funky.

MJ doesn't sort numbers correctly in the tree. For instance : Track Numbers (not that I can understand why'd you want to display these in the tree) sort as 1, 10, 12, 2, 3... BPM sort as 100, 102, 19, 20, etc. It appears to be treating these as character strings instead of integers.

I realize that the Smartlist Wizard isn't finished yet, but right now some things are just flat out broken. For instance : I cannot add a keyword after adding a rule. The keyword becomes part of the Rule's criteria. Also, for some reason, if I try something like, add a Rule of Media Type : Audio, and then try to add a Rule for Genre, the Genre list is empty. The same thing happens if I try Genre first and then Media Type. Also, Rules like dateimported should have a cleaner way of entering criteria other than number of minutes. Maybe some sort of years/months/days/hours/minutes type of dialog box?

Requests

Vis Bars : I'd (still) like to see seperate hide modes for each of MJ's display modes (Internal, External, Fullscreen). I'd like to have them never hide in Internal, but autohide in Fullscreen & External, for instance.

Replay Gain : MJ really needs Album Gain. If Playing Now contains a full album, use Album Gain, otherwise, use Radio Gain. If it's a mix between a full album and mixed tracks, check to see if the tracks belonging to the album are all in track order. If so, use Album Gain on those tracks. If not, use Radio Gain on the entire Playing Now list.

Image List View : Can there be some "missing image" image? Like the MJ logo in place of a blank square? Or better yet, an image that we can specify for all missing artwork?

Image List View : For the single image album art view, there needs to be a way to see the tracks belonging to that album. Maybe a multipaned view that shows the cover image on the left and the track names on the right? Or even a tooltip balloon like the ones that Rhino is using in his AlbumView plugin.

Content View : Can all views remember their own view settings? Basically, what I'd like to see is Playing Now being able to just display Artist, Album, Name, and Track #, but have Media Library display more detailed information, like filename, BPM, etc. I'd also like to be able to specify that an Album view scheme display the album art view, but an Artist view shows the regular text view, etc. Playing Now should be able to be independently set to always show list view or image view, etc.

Slideshow : How about an option to display the filename of the current file in Fullscreen mode?

Ripping : I'd also like to see MJ be able to rip a CD to one wav\ape\mp3 and create a CUE sheet. Being able to create the relevant APL or whatever files in addition would be great along with an option to either import the full album wav\ape\mp3 or not.

Visualizations : Can these remember what Display Quality to use based on what mode (Full Screen, MEGA-ME, mini-me) MJ is in?

I think the Cancel button in Skin Manager should be changed to Close. It would just represent what it actually does a little better, IMO.

Can we get an option in Skin Manager to close Skin Manager on skin change?

Hey Matt,
you said for v9 you were going to make the 'find' dialog box persistant so it always appeared. This is definitely welcomed.
I was wondering how, say I was browsing the tree and was currently in the 'Tupac' node for artist and it was say showing 300 tracks for tupac. If I used the search box to find 'love' would it search those 300 tracks of would it search the whole db?
I dont think there is a right or wrong answer as to what to do for this as I personally would want to do both at certain times.
Would be REALLY nice is if there was an easy option to switch between the two search types. A little check box possibly or something that just said: Search Whole DB.
If it was checked it searched the whole db, if not then it only searched the current nodes info.

Nila, search will be visible everywhere in the library in the next build.  It will always search the subset of what's selected in the left view.  To search everything, you'll have to hit Ctrl+F first...

Bug:

Burned an mp3 disc this morning before I left. Had to go away from the machine so I didn't watch what it was doing.

Basically----> Selected four artists' and dragged the entire albums to the drop target (Playlist). Sent playlist to burner and hit start. Burn done, gotta GO!

Here is the goofy thing. All track 1's were burned together. Tracks 2 the same. Etc. Etc. Etc. Instead of burning the entire albums alphabetically. It went by tracks. Anyone?

What was "Rearrange CD Folders" set to in the burn options?

There's a bug with the writer that writes the literals "ARTIST", "ALBUM", etc instead of the actual artist and album names.  The result is that all tracks wind up in the same directory.

If it was "None" then all the tracks would be placed in the root directory and sorted according to the track number.

How about the playlist?   "Playlist.m3u" should be in the root directory of the drive.

Just checked the cd. Yes, there is a playlist .m3u shown in the root dir.

Gonna try something different here. More later.

It seems that was the problem. Just burned another disc in the same fashion. Drag albums to playlist, send to burner. This time made sure rearrange folders was set to none.

But, still have not checked it in the player. Have to see there if it says the same as the computer.

This is a burning bug. Checked the playback in the cd player. Still rearranges by track numbers. Had None selected in the burning options.

Unless you guys have something going on here that I haven't figured out yet. It almost acts like a shuffle, but with the track numbers instead. And the Artists are also alphabetically sorted as well. Forgot to check, but I think the songs may have been as well. ?

Is there any way to get the secure rip logs to be self naming? Maybe read from the tags and fill in the info. Artist, in particular, would be useful. Just a thought.

Back to the burn ordering for a second...

Does your player look at the Playlist.m3u file or the directory structure to determine the order?

If you selected "None" as the rearrangement method, then having all the tracks sorted in ascending order is exactly what I'd expect to see when viewing the CD from Windows or if you're player looks at the directory structure.   You're at the mercy of the file system and it sorts files in ascending ASCII order.

The Playlist.m3u file should, on the other hand, preserve the track order as it was in the the burn window.

Dunno if this has been reported if it has I haven't seen it so I am sorry if I am repeating!!

When you set the top window to Track Info and go to Artist Info at AMG there are no scroll bars in the browser so you cannot see the bottom of the page...

Dragging files around in Playing Now results in funky behavior. For instance, when I dragged a file up one spot, MJ displayed it with the same name as the file that it had displaced. A refresh fixed it.

I don't think it looks at .m3u. Have to find the documentation and see. I still think this is a bug. v8 can do this without sorting all the songs by track order. In fact, done this many times with 8.

Usually hustling in the morning, so I make a 'New Playlist', drag several artists entire albums to the list and send to burner. 8 goes about its business and spits out the disc when done. Never has it sorted like this. And, I would think if 'None' were selected as the option of choice in 9 this would be the same behavior. But then again, I still have not dug into 9 as much as 8.

My experience with MJ9:
* MJ9 fails to import files that have a word in the filename that starts with a capital Ø (Norwegian/Danish letter). I can play them, but not see them. They where ok in v8.
*Files converted from ape to mp3 VBR lost all tags
* I would like the command and tools menus in properties to be (optionally) expanded

Thanks

I agree on the expanded commands and tools menus.  Would be nice certainly if apply and discard changes had their own buttons ;D

1 quick RFE:

Can the "Toggle List Style" button become a pull-down for the three view styles like the "View Filter" button next to it on the toolbar ?

Installed MJ9 into my "project" and I'm very impressed with it. Loads a lot faster than v8 ever did.

I used hibernation while MJ was playing a song. I figured I'd give it a test run. Well, everything booted up fine and MJ was right where it left off but it was stopped yet it was in play mode. Had to restart the PC, restarting MJ didn't do anything. Sound card must have been locked. I'm pretty sure v8 was able to do this.

Speaking of v8, I have my sound card set at 24-bit (24/96) and v8 was unable to do crossfades with that setting. v9 has no problem of doing it. So is 24-bit in v9 the same as if it was in v8? Stopping a track would stop immediately no matter what setting was used, in 8 or 9.

I am also use large fonts and when opening the properties tab, the spacing between the entries were mushed together (640x480). Not unreadable but some of the letters are cut off. I know this was a problem in v8 but has been fixed.

Despite all the little things that need to get ironed out, I think you guys are doing very well with v9!

I can't give my system info at this time otherwise I would.

It's a _car_thing_, right?   ;D

For those who don't know Dave (too bad, BTW), his "PC" is in the trunk (the boot) of a Pontiac.  He visited us last year:

So, Dave, uh, does Hairstyle work?
