Title: Brushed metal 9.1 skin (UPDATE - 214)
Post by: JC on June 22, 2003, 11:52:18 am
Designed to look familiar ...

I couldn't sleep last night, so I started work on a brushed metal style 9.1 skin. My Photoshop skills are very limited. Additionally, I don't have access to the application I am emulating, so the menus, rollover column headers, etc ... are hard for me to skin correctly.

Anyone have some screenshots of the options windows for this application they would be willing to send me?

Also, for those of you familiar with skinning, I can't seem to find the button next to the search window in the skin directory. What is it called?

Thanks!

BTW - you can see my progress (not much) right here (http://home.mindspring.com/~jc2000/images/MC9/metal2.jpg).

Looks sweet.

Will help you if I can but I have no idea about this skinning sdk thingy. :)

Keep it up.  Hope to be able to use it soon.

It's the same button that is used in the "Frame" area - "Frame_Button.gif". I hope this will be changed soon  because it's hard to make one button which looks good in the frame area and next to the search box...

Thanks for the helpful hints ;)

Thanks to knickelfarz, a new version (with updated search button) can be found here (http://home.mindspring.com/~jc2000/images/MC9/metal2.jpg).

Modified the look of the metal and skinned the main window search button.

Notes
- The fact that the sidebars stretch vertically to expand the application window create odd patterns ... I'll probably change to a solid gray on the side borders for this reason.

Of course I refered to the Skin SDK when I sad "It should be changed soon"- Sorry ;D I tried to say that it would be much better if the SDK would offer the possibility to use a different button for the search bar...

Use "DrawMode="REGION_E_VTILE" for the vertical borders  ;)

I owe you thanks again ... I understood your response about the search button, but as you can see, I didn't even know which image to adjust in my first attempt. After your post, I modified the button to look "so-so" with the skin, before, it looked awful.

I agree that it would be nice if it were a seperate image. The button, which looks nice on the main page, looks out of place in the other windows.

Thanks for the VTILE setting information ... looks a million times better now!!!

Big thanks to knickelfarz ... he has this skinning thing down pat. I suppose this is about as far as I want to take this skin until the changes settle down a bit.

If anyone wants it, I may post it for download tomorrow. Not sure if the JRiver guys want me to do that or not.

JC,

The skin looks great...  If you can make it available (even by e-mail), I'd appreciate it.

Might I suggest that you don't overlook the mini-me skin, either?

You should base the mini-me on the LowerRight skin. Add the metal color and rating options - that would be awsome. Good work so far.

I'll upload it to my site this afternoon unless I hear complaints from JRiver. I'll post a link to the skin in this thread.

Please be aware that it's only the Mega-Me main interface that is skinned. I don't have access to the "real deal", so getting images for the option windows and such is not possible for me now. If anyone has some screenshots they could donate, I would be appreciative.

Also, I don't want to spend too much time on it considering the SDK is likely to change in the near future. Just the main interface (which is what I use) and the other elements will come into play eventually.

Nila,
This skin should be pretty close (aside from the seperator bars and the list shading). ;)

Click here (http://home.mindspring.com/~jc2000/images/MC9/metal4.gif) for a picture of the current version.

I've tested it with tonights 204 build and haven't encountered any errors yet ... of course, YMMV.

If you want to download it, you can find it here (http://home.mindspring.com/~jc2000/images/MC9/iTunes.zip). Comments are welcome ...

Due to the universal usage of some colors and buttons, the options windows look rather weird. I'll probably wait to see if any elements will be split apart before uploading an updated version. I'll spend more time trying to tweak the colors, as they look rather weird right now in some cases.

Have fun, and I recommend switching to a "standard" skin when you install any future beta builds as this version may not play "nice".

Looks amazing.  I'll let you know if I have any problems.

One comment would be that the minimize/restore/close buttons would be really cool if they were translucent grey, and then changed to the colors only on mouse over.

JC,

Thanks again for the skin...  while it's missing a few items, I still think it's the best out there!

A few comments, for what little they might be worth:

- The Menu_Back is a little light for my taste...  especially considering that there isn't a frame around it.  I replaced it with:
- The blue scroll bar seems out of place.
- The center lighting on the MainFrame_TopBorder seems a little strong.

Again, a great skin!  I'm sure there are a lot of people that appreciate your work - I hope MC will include it in the distribution.

I'm eagerly awaiting the Mini-Me!

The skin looks great! I would like to see the blue scroll bars removed and replaced with something more suiting for the theme (even though it would deviate from the iTunes actual look). I like the above background image for the drop-downs as well. Thanks again!

Thanks for the nice responses everyone.

I tried a light gradient with an outline for the menu background initially, but changed it to something more Mac OSX style ... unfortunately, since I have to tile the background with the pattern, I can't have an outline (and no drop shadows like with the Mac). Unless knickelfarz has another trick up his sleeve, I'll probably deviate from the current background to a light gradient with a dark outline.

I tried to make the gridlines in the list blue tinted like iTunes (and to match the scrollbars), but the color MC9 uses is derived from the color of the separator bars. So, to get blue gridlines in the list, I had to have blue seperator bars, which looks awful :(

I may change the buttons to clear (to match the play/pause/ffw/back buttons) and rollover to blue ... then I could change the scrollbars to clear also. This will, of course, have to wait until tonight as I'm at work right now.

I may try a mini-me skin after the GUI changes settle down ... probably won't be for a while though. Much more involved, but if anyone has some interesting ideas, I would appreciate them. Insomniacs have to have something to kill the evenings ;)

I actually revamped the skin with a few tweaks. When I finish polishing, it should look much better as Adam (from ipodlounge.com) turned me on to an excellent OSX visual style for XP.

Since I can see the windows in action, it helped me a lot in getting the right look for the dialog boxes and such.

Additionally, pestering knickelfarz has been helpful (for me, not him)  ;)

I should have something released by the weekend. Although the icons can be changed now, I probably won't change those ... not enough creativity, I suppose :)

could you pass on the name or location of that visual style for XP?  I'd be interested in seeing how it works.

Just wish I had extra money to pony up and get a G5!   Too bad it would be pretty much for playing with... can't to development on it, or play games, so it's very hard to justify. But I'd still like one...

At least I can run the VS and pretend (be a poser ;D ).

OT: Does anyone know how to get the scroll bars in Pheonix/Firebird to not be twice as wide when using Visual Styles?

I personally really like the way the scroll bar and min/max/restore/close icons look in the Graphite mode of that theme.  It's much more subtle.  Just as a thought for future updates.

How do you install this skin?  I went to the skin manager and hit browse.  Then I selected the zip file with the itunes skin.  MC9 said it installed OK but when I selected the skin, it crashed with only half of the screen showing and no tabs visible to change it back.  I ended up having to reinstall.  What did I do wrong? ?  This is a really cool looking skin and I would love to be able to use it.

What I did was use WinZip to unzip it to the Skins folder, and the folder info in WinZip put it all in Skins/iTunes.  Then I opened MC9 and it had it listed in Mega-Me Skins.

I liked it, but it still needs a bit of work to get rid of the PixOS parts (like the Properties dialog box).

Sorry for the confusion ... I don't know how to create an "install" for the skin (anyone care to help me out?), so what Dan said is correct, just take the iTunes folder in the zip file and put it into your MegaSkins directory.

I've removed most of the remnants in the current version which I hope to post this weekend. Still a few things to rectify (like the progress bar, radio buttons, etc ...).

New Screenshot (http://home.mindspring.com/~jc2000/images/MC9/brushed.gif) of the modified skin.

Changes
- Updated maximize, minimize, close buttons on the main window
- Changed scrollbars to a more accurate color
- Updated buttons and dialog boxes to be more usable
- Added border around all menus
- Utilized transparency around the status and search windows for better blending into the main window
- Added checkbox visuals
- Change theme name to "Brushed Metal"

If you want to, you can download it here (http://home.mindspring.com/~jc2000/images/MC9/iTune2.zip).

To install, move the iTune2 folder inside the zip file (and all files inside) into your Media Center/MegaSkins folder. Activate the skin by enabling "Brushed Metal" from the skin manager.

Enjoy ... and if anyone knows how to make an installable skin, I would be appreciative.

to make the files u want do this:

Create a text file
Put this inside of it:

[Package]

Name=iPodSkin
Action=INSTALLSKIN
Url=http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/mj_data/skins/iPodSkin.zip

That should do it for u :)
Obviously just replace the name and url with whatever is appropriate.

Thanks for the response!

OK so I tried unzipping the itunes2 folder to my desktop and then using Windows explorer to drag it to the Mega-me folder.  The itunes folder shows up in the Mega-me folder in explorer, but when I go to the skins manager, it is not available to select as a skin.  I also tried unzipping the itunes zip file directly to the Mega-me folder, but to no avail.  What am I missing? ?

I believe this skin will only work w/the new 9.1 beta.

If you're interested in using a beta you can, the link to it is at the top of this board.

I could be wrong about it not working w/9.0.180, but I know it works w/the 9.1 beta.

Adam,

Glad you are still interested ... I spent some time working out some bugs and tweaking the display (as transparency and animation speed were concerns), but if you check this thread (http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=MediaCenter;action=display;num=1056939845), you will see an early screenshot and I should be posting a new screenshot today.

Additionally, I will probably need some beta testers to confirm the Lucida Grande font is properly installed when installing the mini-me skin. Keep an eye on the mini-me thread. I'll post information over there when I get home from work.

The skin looks great, especially after I sorted out the fonts and switched on ClearType. One thing I noticed though is shown on the screenshot in the previous post. There is a white horizontal line running through the location bar which looks ugly. I notice that it isn't on the screenshot posted by you JC. Do you know what causes that to appear?

I have the white line also ... I believe it has to do with the way I'm streching the image for the location bar, but haven't spent any time with it to try and fix it. On my computer (1600x1200), it is barely visible, so it hasn't been high on my todo list. I may play around with it some this evening to see if I can remove the effect.

Hmmm....
using 1280x1024 here and no line.

I tried a few things like changing the font size, also tried it with the lucida grande font, but couldn't make the white line appear. Odd one huh.

This really is a most excellent skin package JC. Thankyou very much for bringing it to us.

Finally started this brushed metal hairstyle today  :P

Here is where I'm at:

(http://www.guillaumeratel.net/bmhs.jpg):

In list mode:

As Scott observed above, hairstyle is still too basic. At this point, there are a few things I wish I could do and that hairstyle doesn't allow yet:

_ increase the alpha blend value for the buttons on the right-hand side in list mode (as you can see it's a little too bright right now)

_ change the font for the buttons, so that I can change the color to something darker and use the Lucida Grande (although I don't know yet if LG would be appropriate for a big size display)

_ display tag infos, so that I can really make use of the big display bar at the top

It'll make a nice tripple set.

MC Should start supporting skin sets soon as well as individual skins - call them 'themes' or something so that we can change them all together :)

Very nice ... I wish my computer setup more easily afforded an opportunity to utilize hairstyle. I would love to integrate MC into my home theater system.

Impressive indeed!

It would also be nice if the menu background stripes were more faded. As dark as they currently are, it's somewhat hard to read the menu text.

Or I guess you could make the menu text a little more bold.

What happened to that all grey version?
Did it get banned? Is there any where I can take a look at it?
It also had alternating stripes in the library which looked nice.

Cheers.

Is there any chance of you adding alternating stripes in the library? I think the skin looks great as it is but that striping did look nice  ;)

I didn't pull it to be a jerk or anything...

The original "Brushed Metal" skin used a directory under MegaSkins named "Itunes2" or something like that.  I manually renamed it to "Brushed Metal", and worked on my grey version of the skin there.  And like an idiot, I didn't back the files up.

When I installed the last update to JC's skin, via MJP file, it overwrote all of my files--since the internal directory name had been changed to "Brushed Metal".  I had not expected the directory name to change from "Itunes2".

So I have no more grey skin anywhere.  Which is too bad, since I had spent a few additional hours working on "standard-looking" scrollbars and such.  :-[

Gridline display is defined in the application. Not sure which option as I'm at work right now (no MC9 on my laptop). If you enable the stripes, they will display, even in my skin, but the option to display or not is set within MC9.

I'll post with the exact location when I return home this evening.

I feel terrible nameless. I'm sorry to have costed you so much work. Perhaps someone that downloaded it still has it and can send it to you?

I wish I had it, but I wiped all my "test skin" directories and went with the defaults to confirm the install file worked properly.

I'm terribly sorry about killing your skin! If anyone has it, could they PM nameless so he can post it again?

No problem JC, it was careless on my part.  No one can send it to me, since I hadn't yet made it available for download (it wasn't quite finished yet, to my mind).  The screen shot I posted was a "preview".  No biggie.   ;)

I'm sorry to hear about your skin getting assimilated, nameless, but I must say that I'm glad folks are shying away from the word "iTunes".  Let's just disassociate that copyrighted trademark word as much as we can from MC9, and the skins we post about it.

Hi JC.  Good to see you back.... Basically all I did was add support for the Action Window and I also extended the top frame bar and the player bar as they seem to be too small in the new version so its just 2 graphic files changed and the main.xml.  I included the action window icons from PixOS rather than design anything new.

matshif

If you want me to send you the files you will have to PM your email address.  I have nowhere to store the files so have to send them.

Woot, JC's back in the house!

Glad to see the triumphant return, and aye, you have missed a lot.

I wanted to ask "a skin maker" this question, and, since you make the skin I use most, I figure you can totally answer it.  Hehe, ready?

I would LOVE it if I could, on my system, somehow map the normal "minimize" button (top right) to the "activate mini-me" command.  That is, I click minimize, and MC snaps into your brushed metal mini-me.  Then, if I want to REALLY minimize it, I can use the minimize button on your mini-me (I'm gettin sickka typing "mini" already!).

I dunno if it can be worked into a skin or if it'd be a reg hack or something like that... I'm 100% in the dark, and hoping that y'all know.

Cheers!

Wow.  I love the brushed metal and the color in the status bar and display area goes really well.

I echo the point about the ratings icons - they are just not easy on the eye for me.  Also I'm just not sure about the blue highlight and scroll bars and the white background.  This just doesn't seem to fit with the 'metal' look.  I think a subtle silvery background would look better.  I'm using E8E8E8 for tree and list background.  I would change the AW to match but can't figure out how.

I wouldn't change the blue scroll bars to silver 'cos that would be too much silver / grey.  I can't think what would be best - something subtle that goes with metal better than bright blue!

Great skin,  Thanks for all your hard work.  It was worth the wait.

Looks great. I'm not too excited about the iPod icons for the rating though (just reminds me that I DON'T have an iPod  :'( ). But overall, a very nice job.

Just copy the following gif in your folder called "C:\Programs\Media Center\MegaSkins\Brushed Metal 241" overwriting the existing one. You'll get the stars back.

I'm not a flake, really I'm not!!!  :D

Sorry, guys.  I was on vacation for the week and was out of the 'net loop.

And to prove it....  :)

I've hosted the Skin (http://www.home.earthlink.net/~ashawley01/brushed_metal.mjp) as well.

Cheers guys.  The ipod rating icons were just a bit of wimsey...I changed them because I could!!  Any other changes should be down to JC.  I only made it possible to work with the action window it is his skin otherwise...

I want to thank everyone who worked together on the skin to get it functional (and looking very nice) with the newer versions of Media Center. With my current situation, I will not be able to devote the time to skin modifications as fast as the interface is changing.

The effort put forth here illustrates the wonderful community of users JRiver has going for it. I hope that I will be able to contribute in just a small way in the future, but my current schedule leaves little time for these types of activities.

Thanks again for everyone's effort on this. The skin looks excellent!

Glad to see it works with the latest builds too.
Sorry you got no free time JC - I know that feeling!

I have 9.1 and the brushed metal skin.  it looks great!

But for some reason I can't activate the "visualization" part at all.   It shows that I have visualizations selected but nothing shows up (the pane doesn't even show up) Anyone know why?

Cheers!

You need to be in Playing Now and then it's possible that the splitter is all the way at the top of the right window.  Look for two tiny triangles or try to drag it down.

Ah that's got it, thanks!
The "Playing now" miniwindow is to the lower left, but you have to actually click on it's titlebar somehow before the mode switches.
Cheers!

Hi!

As JC and NoCodeUK didn't had the time to do it, I updated the skin to work with build 246 (also made some small fixes)...

Install Brushed Metal Skin for MC 9.1.246 (http://www.futurehome.de/mc/skins/brushed_metal/BrushedMetal246.mjp) (Will not overwrite older versions)

Enjoy ;)

knickel:

Thanks for doing that!  Not sure if you've got the time, but is there any chance of maybe updating the mini-me skin?  I see now that right-click menus are black.

Also, (and this is asking for a lot)...one of the features I really dug about the mini-me skin was the fade-in and fade-outs of the hover on the Play buttons.  Any chance of getting that added to the Mega me.   ;D

Not in the next few weeks, but maybe later if nobody else does it ;)

This is not supported by MEGA-ME yet... Maybe it will be introduced with MC10... who knows... ;)
Title: Re: Brushed metal 9.1 Mini-Me broken?

Is it just me, or did the 9.1.260 build break the Brushed Metal Mini-Me skin?

Basically, the equalizer and viz windows are undocked from the main window. There seems to be no way to move them back to be adjacent to the main window, and moving one of the open windows moves the other.

Try deleting the state.xml file from the Brushed mini-me folder. Make sure you're in MEGA-ME when you do that. Then switch back to the mini-me skin. It should revert back to the default settings. It does work fine here with .260

I re-installed the Brushed mini-me skin, that did the trick. No problems. (re-installing probably re-set the state.xml file)

Ditto, for the latest link to the skin.

Also, are the track backgrounds in the list alternating colors in the latest version?  I find it much easier to read through, than those where it is just one solid color.  If it's not, is there any easy way to modify the xml to set the tracks to alternate colors?

Very strange.  I think that I'm going to have to do an uninstall/reinstall with my laptop.  On my desktop, I get nice alternating colors for the lines... on the laptop... no go...  Weird.

Kiwi,
You probably need to turn on grid lines in your MC preferences. That fixed the alternating lines for me.

Hi,
I tried using the mini-me skin and when I right click on it, the context menu background color is black and I can barely make out the text  which is a darkish gray.  FYI....

Yeah hakuin, I had the same problem.

I'm no skinner (as you'll soon see) but I at least was able to make the menus show up better.  They still are ugly though...

Installable Mini-Me Brushed Metal (http://www.home.earthlink.net/~ashawley01/mini_brushed.mjp)

Since I've been asked for it, I'll paste the link to my mod of JC's skin in this thread:

I've actually also modified JC's mega-me (this time plundering the blue steel skin...). It matches the PN well. Here is a screenshot:

You can download it here : http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/gr37/brushedmetal246b.zip (http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/gr37/BrushedMetal246b.zip)

(If anyone can tell me how to make a skin install file, I'll gladly replace the zip...)

While I'm at it, here is the link to the Playing Now skin I made to match the Mega-Me (thanks to Drowbe for the inspirational model!  ;))

I've plundered Drowbe's work on the [banned] playing now and JC's great brushed metal skins. I mixed them together and here is the result:

I put together a similar skin based on JC's work, JRiver's own metal skin, and the now default "Blue Steel."  I just tweaked it to be happy with v10

It's in the forums under a post entitled "Newly remixed Skin"

here's a screenshot:
