You can take a look at the "Now Playing" section of my website ([banned]) to see the info I am blogging there.  If anyone wants the ASP code needed to do it, I'll post it.

Very nice. I wouldn't ming toying with the code. Actually, I would also be interested in the one you use to display random pictures on the right.

Mine is a rework of Doof's PixOs:

(http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/gr37/myplayingnow.jpg)

 As you can see, it is meant to fit my own PixOs-inspired hairstyle skin. Although I'm now quite happy with the way it looks, there are a few drawbacks:

_ timetostay=9999999 so that it's always on. The problem then is the huge pop-up when not in hairstyle mode (Rhino: in that respect it would be great if we could select the modes in which the plug-in is enabled, e.g. in the PlayingNow.ini something like EnablePopup=hairstyle (or MegaMe, or MiniMe, etc.)

_ it will only fit my hairstyle skin in 1024x768. For other resolutions, both the playingnow skin config.ini and the hairstyle skin main.xml needs to be reworked.

If you can persuade J River to add a facility to get that information then I will add it.

if anybody wants it, just ask and i will zip it up and find some server space for it.

what files do i need to zip up? just the directory with this skin in it?

It's ok is that. Only downside I see is that the ratings are a bit hard to make out.
....

Yup. So long as the background, the .ini file and any other sound or image files referenced are all in there.

Drowbe, nice m8. Ratings that aren't stars too, 10/10 for originality:)

Just to tell you that I like your skin very much. I've made some small modifications to it and it's now my default  :)

Thank you!

Fantastic to hear!  As you probably found, I included the Photoshop PSD and Firework MX PNG files in the resources directory for that very reason.  I'd love to see your version...

--Thomas

Well... actually I just changed the position of some things and almost did not touch the background design (Honestly, I simply would not know how to do it  ;D). I also put the stars instead of the balls for rating.

Here's a screenshot of how it looks like.

Thanks again for sharing your design, Thomas.

Take care,

From what I understand, there's no way to disable the partial transparency of the list area in Hairstyle.

Hey drowbe - have you updated your skin for v1.2?
Title: Re:PlayingNow Skins Library Thread.
Post by: milehigh on October 31, 2003, 01:53:35 am
Hey Drowbe,

Your screenshot looks great - I don't know much about programing but you managed to incorporate everything that I wanted for this skin to a tee!!!!  One problem though - I downloaded it and unzipped to the skins directory - once I changed to the [banned] skin - I got the following error message:  Could not save the image to the file "C:\Program Files\J River\PlayingNow 1.2\Skins\[banned]\PlayingNow.jpg

I changed the config file (under the general section) to the following - which is the path where I would guess most people have this since this is the default directory for playing now:

SaveToFile=C:\Program Files\James Dickson\PlayingNow 1.2\Skins\[banned]\PlayingNow.jpg

Thanks again.  Looks great!

Drowbe,

One more quick question - how could I change the color of the RATED songs - I would like to make the dots for the songs that are rated to stand out a little bit more (probably a darker blue) - I tried to edit the PNG files for the ratings but that didn't seem to make a difference?

And I guess since I have looked at it a bit - what would you think of moving the current playing songs rating to the block that has all the current song information - i.e. in the light blue box - under the time?  If I can figure out how to do this I might give it a shot.  Thanks again.

okay - sorry to keep posting sporadically - actually changing the color did work - I had to change the skin and then come back....
Title: Re:PlayingNow Skins Library Thread.
Post by: RhinoBanga on October 31, 2003, 02:30:56 am
That's because PN only checks to see if the Config.INI has changed and if it has then reload the skin.   It doesn't check any of the ancilliary files as that would slow it down.

Post by: RhinoBanga on October 31, 2003, 03:58:52 am
RhinoBanga's plugin made it really easy to put these things together...I give him most of the credit.  I do Interface Design for a living, so I'd better be able to come up with a decent skin... :)

I've been toying with the idea of allowing you to provide a grayscale bitmap as the alpha blending mask (as opposed to nominating a colour) to make a transparent background.   Would that help with your rounded edges issue

Quote
Yeah, forgot to mention that you need to validate the directories.  I install all of my plugins under the J River directory so they are easier for me to find.  I wonder if ".\PlayingNow.jpg" would work...?

No, it requires a absolute path as it made more sense that you'd want to know exactly where to save the image.

Post by: hakuin on November 10, 2003, 08:55:57 pm
Hi,
I am using latest version of Playing Now with a modified version of the Blue Steel playing now skin.  When the popup is fading out, all the function in MC 9.1.300 lock-up...and then when the popup has disappeared, all the things i clicked and keys i hit are executed.   This is obviously really annoying and something I would like to stop. Any ideas?  The values I have set for show/stay/hide are as follows:

[General]
Background=.\Background.jpg
TimeToShow=100
TimeToStay=8000
TimeToHide=5000
Blend=True
Transparency=255
Position=635,535

thanks,
Lee

Hi Marko, That's a really cool pop up. Now what would be awesome would be if the middle was a little lighter grey then the top and bottom... It would match the Blue Steel skin quite well.

I gave it a shot, But I am pretty useless at it.  ::)

Ya, that's pretty much it.
I'm still playing around with it....

Is there anytype of instructions on how to edit it...

What I want to do, is instead of having ratings (I never used them) have a small album art displayed in the Previous and next. (If possible)
And around were the graphic is, have some album info ie, year and such.

So is that possible, And how hard would it be for a newby?

The *start menu* is located in the lower-left corner of your screen on your taskbar (assuming you have the default settings for your operating system).  It is where you launch most of your proframs from.  It says "Start" on it.

Go to Start > Program Files > James Dickson > Playing Now and edit the "Main Configuration" file.

OK - i should do more work before bothering you-all. I've reinstalled and see where its putting the start menu items. Thanks for your patience.

Hm, well, I'm definitely confused.

Mine doesn't have it, but looking in the Plug-in Manager it lists it as 1.01.00.00.

I don't get that though - I never installed anything before 1.2, and the menu it installed under the start menu is clearly labelled 1.2!

It installed itself under C:\Program Files\James Dickson\PlayingNow 1.2 and I even put some extra skins under there, which it sees... But should it not appear as 1.2 in the Plug-in Manager?

Did the "set as default" option come with version 1.2?

Rob, The version number thing is a lil' oversight ;)

Here's an image to show what you're looking for, and where.....

It *should* be there for you :)

OK, well, that's even weirder then!

I definitely don't have the option! :-(

It goes straight from "random" to the list of skins....

Here's what it says in the Version.txt file:

//  1.2.0.0      05/11/03
//      +      Added ability to set the current skin as the default on the right-mouse menu.

If you don't have the menu option then you're not using v1.2.

Uninstall PN, do a search for PlayingNow.dll on your HDD and delete any it finds then install v1.2 which can be downloaded from the interface plugins page.

OK, thanks....

I'm pretty sure I didn't ever install anything else, but to be sure, I uninstalled it and then redownloaded and reinstalled it last night and it still wasn't working.

I'll do the extra step of deleting any copies of the DLL when I get home this evening.

Still don't know what was going on there, but at least I'm fixed now.

Don't quite get your version numbering scheme :-) but I was running 1.2.0.98 rather than 1.2.0.0.

I'd gone through the whole process exactly as you'd expect - uninstalling it from within MC, uninstalling it by running the uninst.exe... that got rid of the one and only copy on the hard disk of playingnow.dll, along with the rest of the files, downloaded it all again from the website, but still got 1.2.0.98 back along with the 1.2.0.98 version.txt.

In the end, I actually had to open up the mjp, get the link from inside it and manually download the ZIP file and run pn.exe from inside it!

So somewhere something was caching an older version. No idea where - it can only really have been Media Center doing it though!

Glad you got it running.

My versions work backwards for beta's, e.g.:

1.2.0.99 ... beta 1
1.2.0.98 ... beta 2

then production goes:

1.2.0.00
1.2.0.01

So I can tell instantly if someone is using a beta.

The version display in MC has been fixed in 1.3.

I think I'll also add an about box option in the right-mouse menu.

Marko and others - are you going to update your PN skins to accomodate the word wrapping in version 1.2.1.99?
