Title: MediaCenter CD for a Gift
Post by: pocket on November 10, 2003, 06:18:08 pm
Is there a way to buy a MediaCenter fully registered copy on CD to give as a gift.  My brother has thousands of MP3s from his personal collection, and it kills me that he uses MusicMatch Jukebox to organize them all.  He doesn't know the pain he's in.  I'd love to be able to give him MediaCenter (preferrably boxed) as a gift.  Is there a way I can do this, or is there a place where I can buy it.

I searched, but got confused with all the license talk....
Thanks,

I think the way that it ended up was this:

You can buy MC using your credit card and someone els's email
That person will get the licencse emailed to them.
Therefore if your buying it as a gift, then he would find out.

What I would do,

Get a card, make a brichure for MC and create a gift certificate.
When yoy give it to him, Go on his computer and purchase MC.

Thank you for the suggestion.  It's not as good as boxed, and I live in Connecticut, my recipient lives in Florida.  I guess I'll have to send him the demo version and register it for him after the holidays.

Oh well.

New request (besides the web media) please box (distribute) MediaCenter!

Thank you.

Are you both running WinXP?  You could get him (or a significant other/friend) to allow you to go onto his system through Remote Assistant or Remote Desktop and install it for him.

Can one change the email address that you have registered with JRiver?  I think that being able to get the purchase it and have it sent to your email address.  Then you could just burn a CD that had the current version on it & license information (including how to get a new license file if your old one has expired.)  Then you could just transfer the Name and Email address afterwards.

Sure it's not as easy as buying a full CD, but it's not that difficult to manage.

I think we need a JRiver ruling here...

I do not think, that you can change the email address... (Although I have been wrong many many times in the past   ;D)

You can change your e-mail address, but not your name (check the FAQ for details).

Thanks for the input y'all, I'll see about getting the gift page back up and running...

Ah, so then it's easy.  Sign up with friend's name and your email address, get the license file, create a small readme explaining the installation procress and how to get a new license file, download the latest stable and unstable builds (depending on whether your friend will want stable/testing).  Burn CD.

Here's a prototype of the readme (replace **** with right info) :

Dear ****

Your registration code is:

****

Please install MC from this page:

www.jrmediacenter.com

Then visit https://rover.jriver.com/cgi-bin/restore.cgi and enter the Registration Code there.  You may be asked for any missing details.

If MC is installed the process is automatic.   The license will be installed for you.

You can also right click on the Install Key and save it on your local PC.  More details are in the FAQ here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/buy_faq.html .

If you need help, please let me know.

Regards,

**** [aka Santa]

Call me dense, but I don't understand all of this; and to prevent screwing it up (getting a license that he can't use), I'll just burn a CD of the demo (which will suffice him for 30 days) and register it for him when I get to him in person.

Why is all this license stuff so hard!  There has to be a better way to thwart piracy.

Hi,

If you'd like to see how it went for me when I bought Media Centre 9.1 for my Dad (I live in Paris and my Dad in Toronto), check the following thread:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=15962;start=msg111570#msg111570

I'm hoping JRiver will take care of the issue before Christmas, otherwise I think I'll avoid the process and get other gifts for those I had originally planned getting MC for.
