Title: advanced tag editing
Post by: dedidio on November 11, 2003, 08:27:51 am
probably just forgotten how to do this as I think it was possible once.

I want to set the [name] of a series of files to "hello [track#]" (obviously not 'hello', but you get my point).  how can I do this?

forgot to mention that the filename must remain intact so although I could put the filename to the comment field, rename the file to the standard I want in the [name] field, then fill properties from filename and copy the comment back as the filename - it's all a bit long-winded.  Any easy way?

If I'm understanding you right, just use the "Rename From Properties" tool, and give it [Name] - [Track #] for a filename template.

I am wishing to leave the filename completely untouched.

I just want to set [name] to be "hello - [track#]" without having to disturb the filename.

I can see that I could accomplish what I'm wanting using the long-winded method I described - just wondering if there is an easy way.

I'd support a feature like this - to parse the tags without having to mess around with the filename.

Right now, a common situation for me is where I have:

Name: Dick Dale - Misirlou
Artist: Various Artists

and I want it to be:

Name: Misirlou
Artist: Dick Dale

I can fix this by renaming the file based on properties using one template, then filling the properties using the filename using a changed template.

But there has to be a better way...

Not sure if it's any quicker, but you could create a new calculated field of "Hello [Track #]", then use the Copy Fields tool to copy that to Name.

having thought on it a bit more what I think would be great is if "move/copy properties" was replaced with a "fill properties from properties" kind of dialogue

Doof,

I suggested this before to Spart when he was asking for a similar thing but it appears that calculated fields do not appear as an option in the move/copy dialog box...would be great if they did!!
