I have about twenty old tapes I plan to move to MP3. MJ works very well in doing this - no problem there.
The volume on these tapes is very low. I have set record volume to 100% but it's still very low. I have set the portable to max volume.
Excuse the beginners question. What's the best way to boost the gain during recording so that the resultant Mp3 will have a much better volume.

Keep doin what yer doin but run MP3Gain on your MP3's. It will actually modify the music data so the file will be RG'd (Replay Gained) on ANY device that plays MP3's.
One thing to remember, the "noise floor" (or hiss) will be more noticeable.

Replay Gain is part of Media Jukebox. Just go to the help file and look for Replay Gain to find out more.

Replay Gain in MJ does not modify the mp3 files; it puts info in the tag that only MJ can read and cause the playback to be adjusted to aim at a playback level of 83 dB.
MP3Gain will adjust the file so it's volume will be changed on any mp3 player. You can use it to set the level to any point you want. 89 dB is recommended to play loudest without clipping.

Well...if MJ RG's at 83 dB, then you wouldn't want to RG a file that has been MP3Gain'd. That would knock 6 dB off, negating the reason you RG'd in the first place.

edit > That's one thing MP3 has over ALL other formats (including ogg(http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/style_images/1/icon12.gif)). MP3Gain'd MP3's work on everything.

Actually, you might want to if your library consists of other formats in addition to MP3.
The MP3Gain program (permanently) adjusts the MP3 levels to 89dB. MJ Replay Gain analysis uses 83dB as the target level (per the original Replay Gain specs). So, if you've used MJ Replay Gain to analyze all of your other files, but not your MP3s, and you enable Replay Gain for playback in MJ, the unanalyzed MP3s will be peaking at 89dB and all the other files will be peaking at 83dB.
However, if your library only consists of MP3s, just MP3Gain them all and then you don't have to deal with MJ Replay Gain analysis.

From your topic line, I'm assuming you want to increase playback volume when you play your music in a portable player. If that is your goal, then use mp3Gain on your mp3 files. MJ's Replay Gain will have no effect outside of playing your files with MJ; it only works if you play the files with MJ.
