I ran into a condition where the Media Editor shows only its minimal toolbar (File (Open, New); View...; Help...), i.e., the one it usually has when there's no file open, even though there is a file open:
I want to split a .wav file into 2 files. So I open the file, select the tail of it that I want to separate, Cut it, click New to open a new subwindow, and Paste. I do a Save As to save the contents of the new subwindow, and then I close that window. Now I'm back to my original file (with its tail cut off), but I no longer have any menus that let me manipulate the audio! There isn't even a File | Save. Fortunately, Ctrl+S still works, so I can save the file before quitting the editor and starting over.
