Title: Media Modes, The Panes and Images
Post by: nila on December 18, 2003, 10:12:52 am
Hiya,

Some time ago there was a big huge discussion about pane browsing and panes resetting to the right once you select a pane.

In the end it was decided that if you select any pane then all panes to the right reset.

I still personally feel that it gives MC ALOT more power if this doesn't happen so the panes can be browsed any which way but I somehow dont see me winning that arguement.

My idea though is for images - with Images there is NO logical way to browse (left to right) and instead it makes a LOT more sense to be able to chose any panes we want in any order.
Now that we have 'modes' appearing would it be possible for the panes when in Image mode to NOT reset to the right so I could for instance do this:

Third pane along - select America, then 4th pane, LA, 5th pane John.
Then decide there are too many images showing and I only want images from 2002-2003 so in the first two panes I then select these two values

With the way it is right now that would reset ALL the other panes, wouldn't it make more sense (esp. in Image Mode) for it NOT to reset the panes but instead to then just narrow it down to those years?

What'd you think?

Yea, Nae?

Yae, Big Time!!!

Images ARE different in this regard.  They don't follow genre/artist/album/song format.  When you are looking to group some pictures it is much more free form and rarely follows a consistent pattern.

Having the panes NOT reset right to left would be huge plus with images.

The best solution to this whole debate which I am pretty sure was suggested at the time but not implemented was that this happened on a per VS basis.  That way everyone would be satisfied...

I wish!!!
I was trying to give a more mediocre suggestion as a compromise.

I'd LOVE it per VS because I'd set ALL mine to be like this - it's sooo much more powerful - esp. if a 'reset' button is just added somewhere to reset the whole lot with one click.

I, too, have brought this up before.  Panes are used as a sort of graphical quick-search.  And as you've pointed out, making them hierarchical only works for hierarchical relationships (hey, imagine that!).  For non-hierarchical relationships between fields, we need something else.

I think an intelligent AND/OR search is the way to go.  For example, Adobe Photoshop Album does something like this:
http://pages.sbcglobal.net/scottraymond/AND-OR.jpg (http://pages.sbcglobal.net/scottraymond/AND-OR.jpg)

Matching is "AND", Closely Matching is "OR", and Not Matching is "NOR".  This way, you can quickly select one ore more fields (and one or more items in a field, for that matter), and then see what the results are.  If there are any AND matches, it defaults to AND (i.e. Matching).  If there are only OR, it defaults to OR (i.e. Closely Matching).  And if there are only NOR matches, it should probably default to OR and have no matches.

This is a really great way to use the panes to search for photos.

Any agreement?
