Title: Can't start MC9- Media Core error
Post by: NBachers on December 24, 2003, 01:45:11 am
I've been using Media Jukebox for a long time.  It kept dumping my playlist info, so the Interact staff suggested I try the Media Center 9.  I downloaded the trial version on November 22, and paid for the license today, December 23.  It installed fine, and I've used it for a few hours this evening.  Now I can't start it, and I keep getting a Media Core error message.  I've tried re-installing the program and that doesn't work.  I can access Windows Media player.  I've invested untold hours over the last month painstakingly recreating new playlists to replace the ones that Media Jukebox 8 kept destroying.  Please tell me it hasn't happened again!
How can I get my new Media Center operating again?  It hasn't even been licenced a full day before it quit on me!

Uninstall, removing registry entries, and re-install.

There is a possibility that you have disk or memory errors.

Thanks for your response.  I'm assuming that when I uninstall, I'll lose my libraries and playlists.  It's been an enormous amount of work getting them all set up.   Is there a way I can set aside the folders that contain my libraries and playlists somewhere, and access them from the new install?

File-->Library-->Backup Library...

(then after you reinstall)

File-->Library-->Restore Library...

To be extra sure you don't lose some settings, you could also back up the registry entry at -

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Jukebox\View Info
(I think that's all you need  , but I'd also back up the whole HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\ key just in case)

PS: Plugins such as AlbumView may store their setup info in different area's... this just covers the main library and your column layouts.
PPS: You should copy whole Media Center/Data directory somewhere safe (this directory stores your library, backups, thumbnails, and maybe your cover art)....   ...oh, and if you -really- want to be safe, you could then burn it onto 13 cd's and post 12 of them out to friends, preferable half in other countries, and lock the 13th in the fireproof/ultra secure 15m thick double reinforced adamantium safe at the bottom of your bomb shelter/underground city block... [ well, maybe that's a bit much, but at least it'll be safe... wait, you probably need one copy off planet too... just to be sure :) ]

Edit:  January 06, 2004 - slightly more rewording (removed paranoia) :)

I've been getting a lot of Media Core errors too with the latest builds - I just presumed it was due to it's Beta nature and so didn't bother reporting it.

Is this rare then? Is no one else getting many media core errors?

MC is crashing on me all the time these days? I always just thought 'early beta' ie normal.

Could you disable or uninstall all plug-ins?

I'd like to do the File-->Library-->Backup Library, but I can't open Media Center.  When I try, I get "Media Core has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience."  Then I can't get any further.
Can I go to any of the files or folders through "My Computer" in the JRiver Program File and copy them?  Would they have any of the library or playlist information?
For the guy who thinks I'm being paranoid-  I've had Media Jukebox 7, 8, and now Media Center on 3 different computers over the last couple of years.  This has been a chronic problem with libraries and playlists being wiped out over & over.  I keep getting told to buy into the newest upgrade but it keeps happening.  I want to enjoy my music, not keep re-assembling it all over and over again.  This isn't like a fun thing for me.
So . . . Can anyone help me save this info before I uninstall?  Remember- I can't open Media Center at all.
            Thanks. . . .

Yeah, you can copy these files from the Media Center directory... not sure exactly where the default location is (I changed it on my system) but you could just search for the file 'mediafiles.jmd' or 'playlistx.jmd'... I would copy the whole data directory that these files are in, then you should be able to just overwrite the whole directory (or specific files) when you reinstall. Also grab the registry entry mentioned earlier if you consider keeping the column & sort order important. (I think you only need HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Jukebox\View Info
for that)

Apologies if I seemed to insinuate that you are paranoid, I don't think this in the least, everyone should keep a copy of their library preferably off-computer (I keep a backup cd)... I was just taking it to extremes, although if you followed all my small-print instructions, I'd probably be safe in saying you are paranoid :) (but at least the data -would- be safe.)

I keep getting told to buy into the newest upgrade but it keeps happening.
I don't think we're pushing you into anything.  I know you're disappointed, but you're seeing something very unusual and you're getting help on it.  If you can just relax a little, people will help get you going again.

One thing you might try is reinstalling the latest version that worked.

You can tell if it's the database that is a problem by deleting the jmd files mentioned above (after backing them up) and restarting MC.  If it is, you can re-import.  You might then try adding back your playlist.jmd file, but I've no idea if it will work.

Again, you may have machine problems.

Media Core error

I sometimes get it but am not sure why, it may be a combo of many things

OK- I got it running.  It keeps stopping when I try to re-copy the playlistx and mediafiles jmd files.  I guess those are a loss.   I've got some of the playlists saved to MS Word- I guess I'll need to reinvent the rest and keep backing up in the future.
     Thanks for your help. . . . . . Neil

You keep saying that you lose your playlists. You also said you've been using Media Jukebox and Media Center for ages. Have they all been on the same machine?  It may just be that you have a faulty hard drive with some bad sectors. Maybe MJ/MC is writing out it's data fine but the harddrive is losing it, thus causing MJ/MC to read corrupt data on startup and hence crash. This may be true especially if the harddrive is old.
Run a scandisk and get it to do a thorough scan. This will hopefully give you some info. Post your system info while you're at it. Go to Help->System Info and post it here.

Scott.

I've been getting the media core errors as well, after a new install using the update function. Impossible to start Media Center.

Just downloaded the version from the website and installed it again, and fortunately it starts up again.  :D
