Title: OT (or not?): Creating photoalbums for standalone DVD players
Post by: Mastiff on February 02, 2004, 11:46:30 am
My wife would like to send some of the children pictures to her mother so she can watch it on her DVD player. No computer within a few miles there... Is there such a possibility in MC, or can anybody suggest a cheap (preferably free, I don't want to spend more than I have to on that woman! (believe me, all those mother in law jokes were made for my mother in law!)) program I can use for that?

Thanks a lot in advance!

I have used Adobe Photoshop Album 2 to do that. There is a free, limited capability version of PSA2 available to download at http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopalbum/starter.html if you want to try before you buy. Unfortunately the free version doesn't have the capability to create Video CD's.

The trial version at the following may be of use if the DVD player can read Video-CD format:

I hope you wife can't get at this forum or you will be in BIG trouble! ;D

I'm not sure it can read video CD, which is why I'm looking for something DVD compatible. And the chance of my wife reading anything on the Net except for a few norwegian newspapers are about the same as for a politician to take a vow of silence...

Knowing that it must be DVD format I see from my copy of Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 that it has an application called DVD Builder.  I have not tried it but from the tutorial/help file it appears it will do the job.  It's costs about £40 direct from Roxio.  Link below:

Hope this is more use than my first suggestion earlier today!

If you have a DVD burner, what software do you use for burning? If it's Nero, it can create VCD's or DVD's full of pics easily...

Mastiff,

Not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but a really cool program for doing what you want (and more I think) is called Muvee Autoproducer.  It can do some really cool stuff with a group of pictures and an audio file (or two, or three, etc.).  You can find it at http://www.muvee.com/website/ap3.php (http://www.muvee.com/website/ap3.php).

On the site, it says this:
Quote
Save your videos (DV, AVI, WMV, MPEG-1 or MPEG-2):
Post your muvee productions on the Web, share them via e-mail, export them back to your camcorder, or save them as VCD-/SVCD-/DVD-ready files.

I've used it several times and it has really impressed me given the amount of user input it requires.

Hope that helps.

Thanks, I'll check that. I do use Nero, but I tried burning a DVD compatible collection there, and it didn't work. I will try again, though.

Hey Mastiff, just try burning a VCD.  The resolution for stills is the same as with DVDs (if you add transitions to a VCD slideshow, however, the resolution will drop to VCD video resolution).  I think these days virutally every DVD player will play VCDs.  And if it doesn't work, you will have the pleasure of having aggravated your mother-in-law!   ;D

Now that's about the best suggestion I've seen in a few years (the one about aggravating my mother-in-law!, that is!).  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I just found an interesting standard.  It's called MPV and allows music, photo, and video files to be written to disks that can be played by _some_new_ DVD players.  Here's a link:
