Title: purpose of "album artist" field?

I just ripped the album A Twist of Motown, recorded by various artists.
The producer and albumcreator is Lee Ritenour.

I have left each song with the actual recording artist of that song, but filled the field "album artist" with Lee Ritenour, hoping that this meant that when I choose him in the artist pane, that album would show up.

But it doesnt.

So I have two questions:

1) What is the purpose of the album artist field, what does this field benefit?

2) How can I have this album listed both under Lee Ritenour AND under each recording artist?

In the case you've described, Lee R would show up if you selected "album artist" for your column type (in library view scheme).  If you select "album artist (auto)" what you'll see is "[multiple artists]"

You can mass copy single artist album artists into the "album artist" field using tools->library tools->move/copy fields.  That way you'll see what you want using "album artist" and will see all the individual artists under "artist"

All those functionalities.. need to spend more time with my MC!

I was really a hardcore MJ6 user - but ah..not that hardcore anymore, didnt keep up with all the development.
