Title: Gapless playback - a suggestion
Post by: Sir Alan on February 09, 2004, 05:34:57 pm
A problem with gapless playback is that many albums have a mixture of gapless and normal gap.  It is thus unsatisfactory to choose either gapless or normal for the whole album.

My suggestion is that tracks could be tagged individually to indicate that the following track is to be played without a gap.  This could then be the default playback mode, with an option to override it if, for instance, a random mix is being played.  This would ensure that an album is always played back just as if the CD were being played.

It might even be possible to tag such tracks automatically if the encoder detects no silence at the end and start of adjacent tracks, but manual editing should be no great hardship

All we need to do then is get the iPod to recognise it.  Or indeed any gapless playback at all. So how about a new OS for the iPod as well when you have a few minutes to spare?   ;)

I think that's exactly what gapless will do since any silence on the CD should get encoded into the actual tracks.
