Since I have read a lot of good o/t here:
Its my turn
What was your first radio.
Mine, a crystal set.
A little needle, you moved around the crystal (cats hair)
and a hundred ft. wire in the back yard.
No batteries, very simple.
And no, Im not a hundred and twenty five yrs. old. ;D

I also had a crystal set (with headphones) which I made from parts.
That was many years after "real radios" (with tubes) came on the market.
I just wanted to see what one was like so I built it from a Popular Science magazine article.
My first “real” radio was an old wooden case RCA tube radio from the 1930’s or early 1940’s which an aunt gave to me when I was a kid. It lasted for several more years.
I really loved all the neat shows that were on old time radio. I still miss them. Television simply does not due justice to ones imagination that was used when listening to old time radio shows. I can still remember many of them to this day.
The next radio I had was a small wooden case “portable” Emerson radio that took a 90 volt battery. The term portable back then meant something with a handle on it but not really portable as we think of today meaning small.
The first radio that I actually bought was a 1959 sears 6 transistor “pocket” radio. It was of poor quality & did not last very long. That was only one year after the transistor was invented.
Radios today are smaller, cheaper, better quality, & much more reliable. ;D

I can't remember my first radio but I can remember listening to Jack Benny, Amos and Andy, Tom Mix, The Hartz Mountain Canaries, The Green Hornet, The Shadow etc. Tells how old I am. :P

I had a radio similar to Doc's. It stood about four feet tall. I remember waking up early on Satuday mornings to listen to Howdy Doody. There were TVs but not many folks had them. I am 52 - 5/6
My first "surround sound" consisted of one of those transistor radios connected to speakers from a few others hung from wires in my room. No boxes, just tiny little speakers hanging from wires. There were at least 4, maybe 6. Sounded as crappy as you might think. But the sound came from everywhere. Cool.

I was jealous of my sister's radio - that big 90V high tension battery looked impressive! It looked a little like a small suitcase with the flat aerial in the lid - so this had to be raised to play it. (Older sister!)

and that was the portable model
i did happen along one about a year ago, and when to "batteries Plus" the battery was no longer made but they looked in another book and it discribed what batteries to use to create the same foot print and voltage.
the problem was the price tag was about $150.00 to get there
