Hello,
I was wondering if there is a maximum number of MP3s that Media Center can handle?
Thanks,
Shawn

i posted a similar question a while back, check out the thread:

basically i dont think anyone knows, but people have had well over 100,000 tracks before...

There is no maximum.
Tens of thousands is typical.
Hundreds of thousands has been known to run without issue.
Much depends on the spec of your PC though low spec PCs have been used with tens of thousands of files.

Yeah, my puny XP1800 system with 256 meg SD-RAM (an MSI Combo mobo that takes both DDR and SD-RAM, and I have a lot of SD-RAM...) runs fine with my 40 K tracks. And the slowest system, a Celeron 600, can do it to, but it takes a bit more time (15 seconds to sort all tracks when going from playing now to the library view as opposed of around 5-10 on the other systems). You probably don't need to worry.

Thats really not true..
someone said they had 150,000 the other day.

It was Dragyn who actually had 220,000+ files, but gave up at 150,000 when system (apparently) ran out of memory, started showing tons of page faults, and import rate dropped to like 1 file/sec (or worse).

So that's a machine problem and not a Media Center problem?

150,000 - what a joke.
i have 20,000 and that translates to 60 days of continuous music. if i scale that up thats around 1 and 1/4 years of tunes. at 8 hours a day thats about 4 years of unique files - phew...
dragyn - you should stick the files online and host a radio station.

I don't think it would be a very good station as I think most of the files are pictures.

Thanks for the help. I was using MC9 and it was crashing after importing around 60k files. Did it both times I tried. Not sure if the crash was related to the number of files but I then installed the MC10 beta and it had no problems importing all my files. Thanks again,
Shawn
