Title: External Encoder q's
Post by: xen-uno on March 03, 2004, 03:33:24 pm
While browsing thru the plug-in page, I noticed the EE (described as follows)...

Author: JRiver, Inc.
Category: Encoder Plug-ins
File Size: 69K
Downloads: 2238
Date Added: 02-24-2003
Votes: 0
User Rating:
Version: 2.0.12
Description: This plug-in can use any external command line encoder, such as Xing mp3 encoder, you have. New build supports any external command line encoder including TAC, MP+ etc.

I see that it's the same version as what is supplied with MC.

Question(s):
Can MC pass tag values to the EE now?..and what are the wildcards? The line "use any command line encoder" implies it can tag any format correctly. How would MC know to use Vorbis Comments on flacs, for instance?

xen-uno,

The External Encoder plug-in supports only format related parameters in the command line. It does not modify the command line in any way, but simply starts an external encoder and passes commands to it.

In order to support tagging, we would have to modify the command line and pass tag information to an encoder.

Currently, we don't have any plans to implement this functionality.

Roger that, Nik.

So we need a Enc_Flac.dll to rip & tag flacs (actually, Oblong came up with a workaround). For myself, it's mainly so that direct flac>CDAudio disks can be made from within MC (I use EAC for the rip/encode step), rather than the in-direct flac>wav>CDA method.

So...
1) Any chance of getting the Enc_OGG.dll source code to Oblong so that maybe he can reverse engineer a flac encoder plug-in?
2) Any timeline on flac inclusion into MC?

Muchas gracias,

OK...#2 will be there when it's there, but what about #1 (in lieu of an encoder SDK)? Does JR prefer not to release the source? It is the last piece of the flac puzzle to be filled.

Once 10.0 is gold we'll try to release an encoder SDK.

Thanks.
