Title: Question to Conv. From Quality 128 to 192 ??
Post by: Pumuckel on November 24, 2002, 03:33:36 am

Hi,

If I have downloaded a mp3 file who was encoded with a Quality of 128,

1) Does it have a sence or do I win in Quality if I make a conversion to 192 ?

2) Or is it necessary to encode a mp3 file with Quality 192 to can use it later.

3) The same file once encoded with 192 and once converted from 128 - 192 does they have the same Quality ?

Hope that someone can give me the answer.

Thanks

128 -> 192 = worse quality. the info is lost already, re-encoding will lose more yet.

It's best to go from cd -> 192 or cd -> 128 or whatever.

NEVER convert from low bitrates to higer bitrates. The result is always much worse than the original file.

Never say never.  I've heard some files that were converted from the infamous Real Audio format (at about 176 kbps) to wave and then to mp3 (at 160 kbps), and they sound absolutely fine to my 40+ year old ears.  I'm sure a digital spectrum analysis would show more noise than going directly from CD to mp3, but I don't hear any difference.  Maybe it upsets my dog, but he hasn't complained yet.  Except for that one pile in the living room...

1) no
2) no
3) no

If a song has been compressed to 128 it will not get better, sorry.
