Title: The most frequent question?
Post by: nivw on March 21, 2004, 01:48:23 pm
I am re-organizing my songs library. I am also re-ripping some of the cds.

I’d looked in the FAQ and this question doesn’t appear, so, what is your take on ripping music?
I am looking for short comment on the issue.
My object is to store as much music on my Karama, which can handle OGG lossy as well as FLAC lossless and of course mp3.

Should I test myself with some test - and then decide what is the highest bitrate I can distinguish, and use this number in all the songs I rip?

I am trying to listen to some songs I just ripped to Vorbis at normal quality, and comparing it to the actual cd played digital (btw thanks for equalizing the volume with both sources – so my comparison is valid)

Should I use FLAC to all female vocals, and ogg to rock band?
Most of my songs are in mp3 160K now, and I am kind of tight on space. So I can’t really afford going FLAC solely.

MP3 VBR High

I also have the Karma and I use Ogg almost exclusively. I use VBR at Q6 and my ears have a very hard time hearing any difference from the original CD. Of course, my 20GBs are almost full. If you don't think you will have a space problem then use flac for perfect sound. But for compressed audio, ogg will always sound better than mp3 at the same bit rates.

By the way, us Karma users need to press for a Karma plugin, and soon!

King - fantastic comment!  ;D

Nivw - test different formats out, if you cant hear it, then dont bother. Especially relevant if your mainly using the music while mobile.

Well It Was Short
Title: OGG does support more features
Post by: nivw on March 21, 2004, 06:54:45 pm
and now I have full suport for it.
I hope that when J river starts building the karma plugin it would be possible to convert the songs sent to the player to a lower bit rate. As Vorbis supports this feature of "peeling down" the bitrate, that would be cool.

I shoved alanis's jagged little pill throgh ogg/high -> and it shounds swell.
I may FLAC only Jazz and clasical.

What site offers a good ear test - to establish waht standard is best for me?

As of late 2003...
"Format supports "bitrate peeling" (reducing filesize without reencoding), although there is no usable implementation as of yet"

from...
http://faac.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?page=Ogg+Vorbis

Bitrate peeling is not ready for prime time yet (and who knows when).
