Title: Question about logging in.
Post by: Ton on March 23, 2004, 09:49:16 am
Actually it has nothing to do with MC and this particular forum, but nevertheless I hope that someone here has the knowledge to help me.
When I log in to this forum (and in fact also other forums), nothing goes wrong and when I close this site and come back later, without closing my pc I am logged in automatically again. As soon as I close off my pc however and start up again, I always have to log in again.
I remember that some time ago this was not the case. When I then registered to a forum and logged in and checked "remember me" or something alike, I was always logged in automatically as long as I did't remove cookies. (Then I had Windows 98SE and now I have XP, don't know if this could be the problem ?)
Anyway I can't find a setting in Windows where something could be set wrong.

Maybe it's your firewall that restricts cookies for certain sites.

If you are using IE the settings for cookies are in Tools>Internet Options and on the Privacy tab.

Check the settings for temparary internet files on the general tab.  I'm not sure but maybe if you don't allocate enough disk space to these they are not saved across boot sessions (just a guess).

What Browser are you using?

Some browsers let you delete cookies when it's shut down, So when you start back up, it's gone...

I have IE and have already set to accept all cookies, but without  result.
Of course it not such a big problem, but I only wonder what I could do.

Hi Ton;

Welcome to Interact.

I assume that you have registered on interact ?

If not then there will be no cookie for you to return to.

Are you running any programs that deletes files on computer shutdown ?

I am running ShutDown Plus Professional & have it set to delete certain file types on shutdown once a day after a certain time.

I recall that Win XP has a clean up utility that can be run from the Scheduler.  Maybe it is cleaning out your cookies.

Also check that you actually have any cookies after doing a boot up of the computer by going to C:\Documents and Settinigs\Your name (or the name you entered when Windows was installed)\Cookies.

There should be several cookies there including one for...
"your name@yabb.jriver.txt".

If it is not there then something is cleaning out the cookies on shutdown or your have not registered.

Hi DocLotus,

You're great !!! I also have ShutDownPro and it was indeed the culprit . I had "empty temp internet files at startup" checked. I unchecked and I was logged in automatically now.
Thank you very much for your help.
Also thanks to the other repliers.
