delete the lib

There is an option in the file/library menu to "clear library". It won't delete your media. You then will need to import again. You will lose your playlists.

no database repair feature?

no

You could try saving your playlists.jmd file from the MC data directory and replacing it after you clear the library. Might work.

Yes. It's called Library Restore and requires some diligence on the part of users to back up their Library. I do that before I install each new release. I've no doubt you will too in future.
Further to Jim's point you could also try keeping browser.jmd and replacing that in the new library as that's where your view schemes are. In fact with a bit of trial and error you should be able to find out which of the .jmd files is causing the problem. Always make sure MC is closed when you replace the .jmd files for the active library.

Is it possible to schedule a backup? How about doing one automatically when MC exits?
