Title: New Real Media Format
Post by: benrose on March 26, 2004, 07:18:51 am
Hi,

After looking at a movie trailer in Real format I noticed that the extension was rpm, which is not listed in the file associations.  It works in Real, however media center does not know what to do with it.  Any known time line when this will be added?

The file format extension is rpm, and I am using Real Player 10.

Regards

Ben

realalternative/mediaplayer classic claims to play .rpm files and will work with MC instead of RP8 but I have not got any handy to try it.

I use RealAlternative with MC and it works splendidly!  However two caveats ...

1)  When you install RealAlternative, you must install the whole thing including the Media Player Classic (even if you don't want it).  If you don't, MC doesn't realize that you have the ability to play the Real format files and prompts you to install the player (and refuses to even try to play them).  Installing the Media Player Classic part of the RealAlternative package fixes it right up.

2)  MC apparently doesn't recognize many of the file extensions that Real uses, even if it can play the files.  I have used RealAlternative/MC successfully with both .rmvb and .rpm files, but to get them to import into MC I simply re-name the extensions to .rm.  I haven't found any problems with doing this thus far.
