Title: MC Makes Incompatible .APE files
Post by: ZenDav on March 28, 2004, 03:21:22 am
I've been evaluating Media Center 9.1 intermitantly for just over two weeks.  I had been quite impressed until I realize that the CD rips I made into .APE format are for version 3.98 alpha.  No other program uses 3.98, they use 3.97.  Even the Monkey audio site only has v3.97 available for download.  Even worse, I messed with the tags of a bunch of my pre-existing v3.97 APE files.   I see now that no other 3.97 aware program (all of them) can see the new 3.98 tags.  Argh!   :o  What now?  I want a lossless format that is not tied to just one software program.  :'(

If my files are now MC only readable, do I pay the ransom and purchace Media Center before my trial period ends?  I can re-rip my most recent CDs again but I want my tags back proper!

FLAC might be a way out of this, but MC doesn't appear to support them.  Is this correct?  Easy CD-DA Extractor is the only APE to FLAC capable converter I've found and it doesn't like MC's v3.98 APEs nor MC's tags on v3.97 APE files.

I'd also like to make Mpeg4 AAC files as it is the highest quality per size that my ipod supports.  Do any MC plugins support conversion to this file format?

3.98 is available through the forum. ( http://www.monkeysaudio.com/files/MAC_398a1_F.exe )

General release will come later.

Zen,
Matt is the author of APE and one of the principal authors of Media Center.  He won't let anything bad happen.

Did someone say flac?

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=18343

So yes...MC supports flac (not a registered extension yet)...
http://www.monsterfang.com/MCinFLAC

For encoding with MC, see...
http://www.monsterfang.com/MCinFLAC/Encoding.htm

To import: open an explorer window, go to your flacs, highlite, right click, Media Center>Import

You can't do direct flac to CD-Audio CD burns within MC yet (or for that matter...any flac to xxx conversions...but hey, nothing beats OggDropXPd for this).

They work fine here in either FireFox or IE...

What kind of an error are your getting?

 :D
Thanks, I feel better about the .APE version situation.  And the FLAC info and web links were helpful too.

I will likely convert all my APE files to FLAC as I would like to continue to use the Easy CD-DA Extractor program which only works with the released version of APE.  It will handle FLAC and several AAC formats - and I've already paid for it.
