Title: MC Release Any Time Now
Post by: JimH on March 29, 2004, 06:27:34 pm
I think MC 10 is ready to go.  Maybe tonight's build (101).  Maybe tomorrow's.  It's just a matter of whether anything big turns up now.

That doesn't mean we won't go on fixing problems of all kinds.  We will.  Once we release, we will just fix things in builds that are available here, and eventually put out a "maintenance release".

We will be glad to go back to "add feature" mode.  Fixing bugs is tough (but important) work.

Thanks for your help.

Each build has had a hero or heroine who reported bugs well and insisted (usually nicely) that we fix them.  They included (and this is from memory so buyer beware):

Zrocker
Doof
RemyJ
NoCodeUK
and a lot of other folks who may never forgive me for forgetting them here.

A special thanks to KingSparta whose steady presence, good humor, and plugin contributions have meant so much.  He always made me laugh when I needed it most.

C8, what can I say.  Thanks.

Thanks to people like xen and JLee and Mastiff who've given others so much help.

Then there's Zevele, Nila, Drowbe, Marko, LisaCRT, Knickelfarz.  We've all learned a lot, I think.  Maybe we're better people for it.  I hope I am.

And who provided the Best Help?  Lise, our old friend from the frozen north.  It's nice to know someone who's experienced weather colder than -38 degrees F.  Thank you, Lise.

Who am I forgetting?  Oh.  Nikolay,  Matt,  Gateley, Bob, JohnT, Steve, Jim, and Yaobing.  You guys are geniuses.  You make me look good (not easy).  Thanks and congratulations.  It's been fun.

Thanks to people like Scott_r, ChicoSelfs, Jaguu, Omni, Sam, DocLotus, Imjustagamer, Justinchase and all the newer folk who make this place unique.  This is a very long list and if you're not on it, just remember I'm 135.

What makes this place special, what makes it cook when it does, is the diversity.  People from all points of view, places on the earth, skill levels, taste, etc., etc., etc., and so forth and so on.

But I digress.  I hope you'll get the picture in spite of the painter.

MC10 is fully baked.  It's ready to roll.

[In the voice of Julia Child... ] ....Bon Appetit!

Thanks Jim.

We're all waiting patiently to see all the work you've been hiding for so long.  Well, other than pong. ;)

You guys have done a great job, as far as I'm concerned.

Does this mean we will not be getting (near)daily releases any more? :(

Oh yeah, take a break, get drunk, sleep in, we won't mind, you deserve it, all of you.

What I started out to say was "Who do you think contributed most to the debugging process for MC 10?"  Suggestions?

I would like to take a second and thank and congradulate All the member's of JRiver. You have made a GREAT product with V10. All the things and problems that I thought this software had and lacked is now complete with this version.

I would also like to thank all of the Skinners and Plugin creators, You guys make a GREAT product even better!!

And lastly I would like to thank all the people that helped me learn parts of this product. I know it aint easy sometimes.  ;D

I also just want to add, Everyone that doesn't believe that this (Interact) is a great place for help and answers please read...

I have in the past 2 months emailed the customer Service department, and sales department of a Very large company asking for help. I needed some info before I purchased a fairly pricy upgrade. (The original product was a freeby that came with hardware) I ended up getting my email answered after 3 emails and 2 weeks later. The email consited of sales links, not answers. Needless to say they didn't get my money.

Whenever I have a question or answer I usually have a answer within an hour or two, and in some cases a software fix the same day. Wereesle can you get service like this?

Thanks again...

IJG

Anyhow, congratulations.

I don't want to be rude. But I still feel MC is not finished.

MC10 is way better that any other multimedia organizer, and it is much better and more stable than any previous version.

However, MC10 is not revolutionary vs MC9, it improved GUI, and it is more stable, but I don't see anything really new. I confess I don't expect anything good about the music store staff, I dont like your default skin, and I am dissapointed about some trivial usuability issues that you have not implemented yet (thought, many people asked for them...).

I guess you have to left things to do for future versions, but many people is asking for a real toolbar since v.7...

Well, great job any way. And congratulations!

I found MC about 3 months ago when I was in search of the ultimate music player for my PC. I was amazed how with every task I completed using MC, the programmers had gotten inside my head and knew exactly what I needed. The little nuances make all the difference to me, and really make MC stand out from all those "other" players. I've been recommending MC to everyone and I have to commend you on your work. You make my obsessive compulsive music/photo/movie filing a lot easier.

Probably the best software product I use.

Thanks guys.

I'm worried that JR will pull a fast one on us, as it did when the previous versions were released: they added some 'must use' features in the last betas and removed them in the final versions.

I'm worried the same will happen with the pong visualisation  ;D ;D ;D

Good work guys!.. thanks for all the bug fixes and usability enhancements

Thanx for the mention Jim... I'll always be there to spot bugs :)  Still using MC everytime I am at my home PC.  Nothing else out there quite like it... thanks to the team for their hard work.  Roll on MC 11 when I can start bugging y'all for features again :)

I've met several.  Lise, Machinehead, Cmagic, and Dragyn.  Here's a picture of Dave (dragyn) when he came to JRiver to show off his car:

Dave is on the left and Matt is on the right.

Here's a picture of Christian (cmagic) at Lipp's in Paris.

Here's Lise, who writes our Help files (thank you, Lise) and her partner, Jonnie.

hope this isn't a personal q. are the developers full time at j river or doing it part time?. From the development of so many versions, i think they are full time. is it right?

I have never seen a software, getting so updated vigorously.

They're volunteers working from the state prison.  If they write clean code, they can significantly reduce their sentences.

That's cause most places have a controlled Beta program. By JRiver letting anyone Beta test new versions, They catch much more buggs and issues...

The last release of MC I believe was November? 9.1

MC will never be finished.

Often, when I'm dressing to go out, my husband ask's "how do you know when you're finished?"  I respond, "When I'm perfect".  I'd say MC is close!  Nice job, guys!

Thank you very much for remembering me, Jim! As most here know I have a pretty narrow focus - multi-zone. But I really like to think that I have been a part of making that better. And you guys are great!

P.S. Graydog: This is a real dog. Take notes! The picture is not good, though. I will finde a better one.

I have no idea how I ended up on that list. I don't think I've posted a single bug since version 8. Maybe I posted so many back then that they're still gaining me credit? :P

Thanks for the mention Jim.  I agree that a lot of thanks are due to the newbies who've contributed a lot in the last few months - Pipsqueak and JustinChase to mention a couple.

I've not been around much for the last couple of weeks as I'm playing at newbie myself over at NetRemote - boy you think MC is a steep learning curve!.  So I'll have my head down for a while bugging mastiff and co.  I'll be back soon to try and help out by answering the nice easy questions (that's what I'm best at!) and hopefully leave you lot with more time to get on with the next version.

A very nice job on 10 - well done and thank you for what is still the best software that I ever used.
