This is a followup to a problem I reported yesterday in the 10.0.101 thread. I did not receive any response.
If I launch Media Center with a disc in my DVDRW drive, I get a hard hang of my computer. I have to power down and restart.
I also get this problem if i put a blanc cd in after launch and then hit the burn cd button...again, hard hang.
Please help!!!
Thanks,
Freshman

I have *exactly* the same problem.

Could you describe your cabling and master/slave setup so I can try to duplicate the problem here. I purchased a Plextor PX-708A but so far haven't been able to reproduce the problem.
Thanks!
John T.
Here's my setup:
IDE primary: master=hard drive, slave=none
IDE secondary: master=Plextor PX-708A, slave=none

Also, look in Tools/Options/Devices and try changing the setting of "enable support for WMDM devices" (uncheck if checked, check if unchecked) to see if it makes a difference.
Also, please describe the other burning software you have installed on the system. Nero version 6? Roxio? Do you have DirectCD or something similar running in the background?
Thanks!
-
John,
My Drive is a NEC ND-2500A DVDRW. I have it connected as the master on the secondary ide controller. There is no slave on that controller.
I do not have anythign like Roxio or Nero installed. I do have the ATI suite that came with my All In Wonder 9800 Pro installed. And, of course, Windows Media Player.
This is actually a new system, and a very recent install of XP with very little additional software besides the ATI Suite and the Media Center Suite.
I will get back to you later on changing the setting you suggested.

Is autoplay on for the DVD drive?
-
Jim,
Yes, Autoplay is on.
Thanks
-
Try turning it off.
-
Here's the thread! Thanks for your attention to this!
I have a Seagate HD as master on the primary IDE. The Plex 708A (firmware 1.06) is master on the secondary IDE.
I get the crash with and without YADB lookup enabled.
Autoplay is disabled.
Nero 6 is installed on the system, but not currently running. ATI MMC is installed on the system, but not current running. (I checked the process manager). I am also using an ATI 9800 Pro AIW. (Though I had problems with the ATI 9100 IGP alone as well).
WMDM is disabled now, I will try enabling and testing.

Thanks. I also sent you an email with a zipped version of the cdwriter control called cdwriter.zip. Did you receive that? If not, you can pull if off our ftp site here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp (ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/tmp)
This control actually does nothing, it just tells MC that there are no CD/DVD writers on the system. I just want to determine if the crash is caused by the MC program itself, or by this control. Could you rename your old one (it's in the MC install directory) and then unzip and copy this one into the same place? Then test to see if you still get the hard crash and let me know. Afterwards you can delete this test file and rename your old cdwriter.ocx back to what it was.
-
Thanks, I will try this right now. [Note: the following occured *before* trying the new cdwriter.ocx files]
BTW I enabled WMDM support, still crashed.
What I'm doing is this: make changes in MC with the DVD drive open, everything works fine. Close MC, close the DVD drive.
Start MC and start moving the cursor back and forth, while timing it.
MC opens, drive spins up. Drive stops and mouse cursor freezes at the same time, almost exactly 10 seconds after MC start.
-
OK, I replaced cdwriter.ocx with the one from the FTP site. Much better.
MC does not crash, and it plays DVDs perfectly.
The optical drive does not show as a burner, and CD Writer options are greyed out - as expected.
-
gpvillamil,
What kind of system do you have? Its interesting -- I also have the ATI 9100IGP on board with a ATI AIW 9800 pro card as well. I wonder if this problem is related to this system board or other hardware component??? Or perhaps some conflict wtih ATI software??
Do you by any chance have a Shuttle system?
Jared
-
Yep, Shuttle ST61G4. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? ATI Northbridge?
However, every other CD/DVD burner I've tried works.
-
Ok, this is getting very interesting. I have exactly the same machine...
Shuttle ST61G4.
So, now what...??
Jared
-
Well, I hope everything is fixed! After all, the ST61G4 is being marketed for home theater apps - though the ATI 9800 is a bit too noisy.
What version of the BIOS are you using? I am up to FT61S01V.
-
I put a different cdwriter.zip at the same ftp location. Please try it like the previous one. This one should crash, but first you should see some message boxes (look around, they may appear behind MC). Please let me know what message boxes appear before the crash.
Thanks!
-
OK, here are my results.
DVD in the drive
Start MC
Message: Init Enter
few seconds
Message: Init Leave
icon in Drives & Devices shows regular DVD
things seemed OK, so I decided to open Tools/Options to see if writer was detected
Message: Init Enter
Message: Please wait while your CD writer is detected
lockup
-
Also, with no DVD in the drive, the sequence of messages is:
Init Enter
Init Leave
Get DeviceInfo Enter
Get DeviceInfo Leave
Set Current CDRDevice Enter
Set Current CDRDevice returning True
hope this helps
-
I tried using the version of cdwriter.ocx that is currently on the ftp site. with this version, i don't get the hang.
i get lost of message boxes, and then it works fine. launch is ok.
thoughts?
thanks,
Jared
-
another update -- with the cdwriter.ocx from the ftp (the one with the message boxes), i was able to successfully burn a cd.
however, after burning, i put the cd back in and i got the hang.
thanks,
Jared
-
ok -- one more update. now i am getting the hang every time again even with the new cdwriter.ocx file.
-
I am on bios FT61S01Z

ok -- one more update. now i am getting the hang every time again even with the new cdwriter.ocx file.
What are the message boxes that you see prior to the hang?
-
Just "init enter" then hang...
-
I placed a new cdwriter.zip in the same ftp location. It has many more annoying pop-up messages but hopefully will get us closer to where the problem is occurring. Please try it and let me know what the last 3 or 4 message boxes are before the hang.
Thanks!
-
Just now put up a new version with some more messages in it.
-
init enter
mburner enter
interface 1
before create spt
after create spt
interface 2
interface scan begin
getcaps
query params
getdrivestrings
interface scan ends
interface 3
init 1, index = 0
init 2, index = 0
hang
-
I just posted a new version with even more annoying pop-ups in it. Please try it and let me know the last 4 or 5 messages you see prior to the hang. This should get us very close to the trouble spot.
It's cdwriter.zip in the same ftp location as before.
Thanks alot!

Good morning from Tokyo!
I just used the "verbose" version of cdwriter.ocx, went through a bunch of commands, then had the crash.
Here is a thought: I noticed that it ran through the following cycle a few times (note: I have edited for clarity and taken out all the "success=1" messages, etc. A verbatim transcript follows later in this post)
GetDiskStatus
InternalSendCmd cmd=81
Internal SendCmd cmd=0
Internal SendCmd cmd=70
Internal SendCmd cmd = 82
So something like this happens for every drive in the system, I'm guessing. In this case be aware that the Shuttle ST61G4 has a BUILT-IN CARD READER that appears as two drives. Is it possible that the crash is occuring when trying to query the card reader, not the optical drive? On my system the drive letters are:
C: system drive
D: DVD/CD burner
G: external hard drive
M: internal card reader (compact flash)
N: internal card reader (SD/Memory Stick)
If freshmanjs has different drive letters assigned, his crash might occur at a different point during startup.
Now the list of the final commands from the CDWriter module...
(removed a few iterations of the InternalSendCmd cycle mentioned before)
...
Init 3, index = 0
Init 4, index = 0
GetDiskStatus enter
GetDiskStatus 1
InternalSendCmd enter
InternalSendCmd cmd=0, numtries=0
InternalSendCmd success=1
GetDiskStatus 2
InternalSendCmd enter
InternalSendCmd cmd=81, numtries=0
InternalSendCmd success=1
InternalSendCmd enter
InternalSendCmd cmd=0, numtries=0
InternalSendCmd success=1
InternalSendCmd enter
InternalSendCmd cmd=70, numtries=0
InternalSendCmd success=1
InternalSendCmd enter
InternalSendCmd cmd=82, numtries=0
InternalSendCmd success=1
GetDiskStatus 4
InternalSendCmd enter
InternalSendCmd cmd=0, numtries=0
InternalSendCmd success=1
InternalSendCmd enter
InternalSendCmd cmd=70, numtries=0
HANG
-
Ok, now I know the exact command that's failing. I've uploaded a new cdwriter.zip that uses that command in a slightly different way that I hope will work ok on your system. Please try this as soon as you can and let me know if it still hangs (and the last few messages before the hang).
If it doesn't hang, I'll take out the messages and we're good to go.
If it hangs, I'll take another look at any other changes I could make.
Thanks, you've been a great help on this!
- John T.
-
Sorry, I still had the hang, final command was the
isc cmd=70, tries=0
...after going through a lot of messages
-
Ok, I tried another change to the code and uploaded a new cdwriter.zip. Please try it and let me know what you get. It should have fewer message boxes than before.
Thanks.
-
This latest version of the plugin seems to work well. No crash. DVD playback works smoothly and well. CD Writer options appear in Tools/Options correctly.
I haven't tried burning a CD but I have a good feeling about this.
It's been a long hard road, but I think you've cracked it!
-
Thats great news. I just uploaded a version without the annoying message boxes. Please install it and do some testing if you have the time. Let me know the results.
Thanks again.
-
Now burning an audio CD... looking good.
You can't imagine how happy I am that this is working - I had not been able to play DVDs or burn CDs at all with my HTPC, using Media Center.
-
Audio CD burn OK!
Data CD burn OK!
DVD playback OK!
Out of curiosity, what was the change you made? If you don't mind, I would like to post it on one of the Shuttle discussion boards. There is a lot of interest in issues related to the ATI chipsets and how they handle some kinds of hardware.
-
Glad it's working!
The problem is kind of technical. Apparently the hardware is not quite kosher with the SCSI MMC device specification. There is a command (Get Configuration) which should, according to spec, accomodate a large buffer for returning information about the CD drive's capabilities. However, when I switched to using a much smaller buffer it seemed to fix the problem on your hardware.
So much for "standards" eh?
How about freshmanjs, is it working for you now as well?
Thanks much for the testing guys.
- John T.

Hi,
I tried a quick test and it appears to work fine. Way to go!! Thanks
