Using the favorites not heard recently playlist is great except for one thing. I usually end up getting a lot of songs by a small group of artists instead of a good mix of favorites by a lot of artists.
Is there a way to limit the number of songs that get returned from each artist?
Here's an example of the results that I get:
Song Artist
Missionary - Operation Ivy
Frail and Bedazzled - Smashing Pumpkins
Midnight Rambler (Live) - The Rolling Stones
Bales Of Cocaine - Reverend Horton Heat
Sweetest Thing [Single Mix] - U2
Dinosaurs Will Die - NOFX
Dreaming - BT
No One's Leaving (Live) - Jane's Addiction
Lake Of Fire - Nirvana
Too Much To Ask - Bad Religion
Gin And Tonic Blues - Reverend Horton Heat
Mi Amor - Reverend Horton Heat
Pessimistic Lines - Bad Religion
Heartbreaker - Led Zeppelin
The Devil's Chasing Me - Reverend Horton Heat
Blenderhead - Bad Religion
Stickshifts and Safetybelts - Cake
Here come the bastards - Primus
Let Forever Be - The Chemical Brothers
Thirty-Three - Smashing Pumpkins
New Girl - The Suicide Machines
Romeo Is Bleeding - Tom Waits
Liza - NOFX
Baddest of the Bad - Reverend Horton Heat
Sleep Long - Operation Ivy
Staring At The Sun - U2
Classic Girl - Jane's Addiction
It's Martini Time - Reverend Horton Heat
Generator - Bad Religion
Trip Like I Do - The Crystal Method

you can use the ~ limit argument... There's actually a preset under Add Preset (when making a Smartlist) - Limit 2 songs per artist. Check it out.

What is the exact syntax for doing this?
I am using version 9.1.316, and that option isn't available under Add Preset. I have Limit under Add Modifier but it only lets me choose Tracks, Minutes, Megabytes, or % of hits. How would I extend this to Limit 2 songs per artist?
What does the syntax look like in the Playlist bar?
This is what my auto playlist looks loke right now:
[rating]=4,5 -[Genre]=[Ambient],[Country],[Drum n' Bass/Jungle],[Gothic],[Hardcore],[Hip Hop],[Industrial],[Metal],[Other],[Psychadelic],[Punk],[Trip Hop] ~sort=[Random] [Duration]=<600 [Number Plays]=<1

Don't ask me what the variables are...I forget, but that should work.

I tried that but it didn't seem to work, I still get multiple songs from multiple artists. ?

~nodup=[Artist]
I tried this and it seemed to work. Am I forgetting any pitfalls to using this method? For example - after it plays one track from each artist, will my playlist stay empty? That would be bad.
?
I think I would rather use LIMIT some how to have control over how many tracks to get from each artist, but so far I don't know how to make that happen.

I think it's only available in version 10, could be wrong, but I don't think so.
-
Yeah, I'm on 10 so I can't help you. Sorry.

I just downloaded version 10 and that has the limit # of songs per artist that I need.
Thanks!
