Is it possible to upgrade freely to MC 10.0.106 from MC9.1

No, but if you're really really quick, you will still be able to get it for the ultra-low price of around $10 as an upgrade. (I think - no promises). However, this price may be gone once MC10 is released. Install MC10 over top of 9.1, then go Help->Buy (or Purchase). This will tell you how much it is.
