Title: Moving a library to a new computer (with new path to music)
Post by: hinius on April 08, 2004, 02:26:26 am
Hi,

I've got a puzzling pickle of a question and am hoping someone would be able to assist me.

I currently am running 9.1 with 100 gigs worth of music stored on drive J.

I have a new computer. I intend to install 10. I intend to import my 9.1 library; however, all my music will now reside on drive E on the new machine.

Given that I'm rather loathe to re-create my MJ library from scratch (and re-replaygain 100 gigs of music), does anyone know of the most logical, convenient, sane way to change the path of ALL of the music in my library to point to the new drive?

Thanks hugely in advance.

Hin

Hey Hin,
Load the old library into your new MC and do a find and replace on the filename(path).

i.e find "c:\my music\"
replace with "d:\my music\"

Should work.

If your new OS is NT/2000/XP you can permanently assign a drive letter J instead of E to that partition.

With XP it can be done in: Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management, then select the E: partition and right click > Change Drive Letter and Paths...

Sorry this might be a dumb q. where do one find the playlists that is associated with that library that he created as he said above?

Doesn't he need to change that?

The best method I've used for changing the playlists to accomidate a change in drive or root path name is to export your playlists as .M3U files, open each file in NOTEPAD and dor a replace i.e. M:\ to U:\. Also, I always like the extra protection of having my playlists exported anyway. I back them up along with all my other user data.
