Well, there has been a lot of movement & change related to handheld players. I was curious as to which of the recent hard-disk based players are supported, and which features. My understanding is that the current state of play is the following:
Apple iPod & iPod mini: fully supported, except for dynamic playlists
iRiver HP140: fully supported, through WMDM
Rio Karma: partial support through WMDM
Dell Jukebox: partial support through WMDM, no playlists
Is this correct?
I would like to know if there are any alternatives to the iPod that are sufficiently well supported by MC that no additional software is necessary. By well supported I mean that a full set of functions for transferring, organizing and synchronizing files AND playlists is available. At least to the same extent as the iPod.

From the help file:
"Media Center currently supports the following players:
Rio 300, Rio 500, Rio 600, Rio 800, Rio 900, Rio S10, Rio S30, Rio S35, Rio S50, Nike, Rio One
Archos Jukebox 10, Archos Jukebox 15, Archos Jukebox 20,
Nomad/ Nomad II, Nomad Jukebox, Nomad Zen, Nomad MuVo,
MPIO, Yepp 20 Series, Compaq PA-1, iRock 500, iPod,
PDA and any players that appear as removable drives within Windows, including Sony Clie, iRock,Iomega HipZip,etc)"

gpvillamil,
Your summary is accurate. Custom plugins for Karma and iRiver must be made to support playlists. They are on the to do list.

Sorry Steve,
The list is not flawless. ;D
The iHP-140 is supported but you have to uncheck the WMDM button.
About the playlistsupport, I tried it but the iHP-140 gives an error message which can't be found in the manual. I assume from your message that this is a known issue and related to MC.

MarSies,
Thanks for the correction. We don't have a IHP-140, so I will take your word for it. I know that if iRiver makes playlists available on the 140 and it is not supported by WMDM, we would have to customize a plugin to add this functionality.

So to confirm something: if I have a Rio Karma I will be able to put files on to it by drag and drop and through synchronization, however playlists will not appear?

A playlist can be exported to the iHP-140, no problem. It also recognizes it as a playlist. (probably because of the extension). You have to use the Winamp playlist.
Only when you want to use it it gives an error message. I then made the playlist on my iHP-140 to make sure that the 'links' in the playlist have the correct path. (can't this be sorted out more elegantly?) No difference at all.
Strange that this needs extra software. The manual states that you have to use the Winamp playlist! I thought that that would be it then.
I hope that the playlist feature which is of high importance to me will be developed so that it's possible to make playlists without the device being connected to the PC. Whadayathink, missionimpossible ;)

gpvillamil,
That should be correct. We do not have a Karma here so that I can say yes from first hand experience, but others have reported that what you say is correct.
MarSies,
Not mission impossible, but mission after some other missions.

MarSies,
I suppose you already know, but in case you don't: iRiver has plans for firmware upgrades, including on-the-fly playlists, scheduled for June.See:

When downloading the handheld plug-in for Nike PSA, it gets a package for the Rio 600. Though Mediacenter shows a Nike plug-in, it won't work.
-
frankpfa,
There is no nike plugin for version 10, you must have downloaded the one for v 9. For version 9 the file hh_rio600.dll is the correct file for the Nike. If you want to run Nike with MC 10, uninstall the plugin and go to Tools->Options->Devices and check "Enable WMDM support" and the Nike should be accessible.

Well, I think I can summarize the rio Karma support up to now.
(1) No playlists
(2) No ogg files can be moved
(3) Very slow transfers
(4) Very slow browsing. It takes about 3 seconds to open a folder, even if it only contains one album
(5) Frequently, MC just crashes when moving files
(6) If you transfer a song to the Karma, and then back, most tags are lost
I do not have the time to try some more things, this is just off the top of my head. In my experience, forget about it until JRiver releases an specific plugin, it is unworkable now.
