Title: Does Media Editor rewrite mp3s?
Post by: JustinChase on April 12, 2004, 01:52:57 pm
When I open an mp3 in Media Editor, and cut off some junk, or split a track, then resave it, have I just converted to a wav, then re-encoded to an mp3 again?  In other words, is editing an mp3 in Editor causing me to lose more informatino than if I just left it alone?

I am pretty sure it does, since when I go to save it comes up as a wav by default.

If I'm right, is there any chance that this can be changed?  I would really like it if I could edit a track in its current format, whatever it is, instead of losing fidelity to simply crop a song.  Also, it would be nice if when I hit the save button it would default to the current track info, i.e. name, location, type.  Then I can change it if I want, which I usually don't

Thanks

From the Media Center Help:
Quote
Media Editor only edits files in WAV format. This means that if you want to edit an MP3 file, it must first be decoded to a WAV file and then encoded back to an MP3 file after the editing is complete. Media Editor will do this for you automatically. However, each time a file is encoded or decoded, you lose sound quality. So, if you take an MP3 file and then edit it, you have already compromised sound quality twice.

You could try mp3DirectCut. It is a freeware MP3 editor. It does editing directly to MP3 without the need to decompress.  http://www.rz.uni-frankfurt.de/~pesch/ (http://www.rz.uni-frankfurt.de/~pesch/)

Thanks Alex, I'll give that a try.

Anyone know if I can send songs straight to that program from within MC, like I can with editor?

Justin,

Sure it does, I just did. Just open the mp3, do whatever manipulation you need to do, hit save as in File, and choose mp3 (or ogg, or any) in the 'save as type' as dropbox.

Cheers,

it also could work better, like remembering the file name, and KBPS

a one button fade in and fade out option would be nice also.

also when it is already open and in mc you select to edit another mp3 it will error out.

Well said King. I'd like to see those bugs fixed too.
