I have a bunch of media files on my laptop (with a local library) and my home desktop has media server running so I have a remote library too.
Can I compare the two libraries so that I know which files I need to copy onto my server at home?
Does that make any sense?

Yes,
No you can't (unless something has changed, and they didn't tell us)

Damn

There's a brute force way...
If you pull up the Artist/Album statistics from the Action Window, you can cut and paste into a text file or Excel spreadsheet. Do that on both machines and either run a file compare tool or just eyeball.
I compared two libraries of about 2000 artist/albums by pasting the stats into 2 adjacent spreadsheet columns and just scanning for mismatches by eye. Took about 10 minutes but they were already pretty close.

Ugly but there you go, I did the same with XML exports of the two libraries
