Was curious to know what ppl think bout this ?
Its a new thing in 10. i found the currently playing track easy to see in 9.1. I find the bolded font gives rise to lots of (...) at the end of the track/artist/album etc name and find myself constantly resizing columns as a result of it.
Its ironic that bold font makes it harder to see what was visible before.
-
I feel your pain, but since i just got a new screen running at 1600 by 1200 I don't have that problem anymore and actually like the fact that it's bold. :-\
Changing the playing now from bold to italic would take care of that issue but would look ugly... Maybe a more obvious background color could do the trick.
Just a thought.

How does increasing your resolution solve the (...) problem ?
-
I like that fact that the currently playing song stands out from the rest. Bold is fine with me, backgroung highlighting is fine too.
I don't care so much about the fact that the info gets cut off by the columns, because
1) I can see the info (the important stuff anyway) in the top bar, and
2) If I need to see more info, the action window is always right there.
-
I think bold text for curently playing is good, but optional. Select and deselect when you want.
-
I like the Bold, The ... don't bother me in the least...
-
I'm hip, gamer...but maybe a bold narrow font (ie Arial Narrow or Universe Condensed) would maintain string length of the normal font...yet still stand out (no adjustments made to equalize font sizes).
Listening to: 'I Against I' from 'Blade 2' by 'Massive Attack & Mos Def' on Media Center 10 <Arial Narrow Bold>

Well, I guess it's just that bcause you have more width, there's more space per column. Therefore I've set my column width so that it pretty much never bother me. It doesn't exactly solve your problem, i know... Just in case you haven't done so, getting ridd of the file location column could help make more room as well.
That's it,

No don't really like that. I wouldn't mind if it was highlited in a diff color...

I wouldn't mind however if MC just adjusted column widths to make it fit, I like the bold but given a choice would chose to be able to see my track info.
This seems to be the best compromise so far. Bold and proper resizing (taking into account the fact that text font is *BOLD* and not plain). I'm quite happy with the default Tahoma font.
So JRiver can we have it ??
-
Er, how can you make it font dependent? The font is user selectable! (and it'd better stay that way...)
I really don't get the big deal about column resizing...

On second thoughts, ur right its *NOT* possible :(
I really don't get the big deal about column resizing..
Oh its a big deal...artist names, track names tend to be long sometimes, i cant see everything the way it used to be, which was perfect.
i would click the end of the column and it would automagically resize perfectly regardless of field size. Now u have to manually resize it cos bold font screws with the auto-resizing, rendering it redundant IMO.
i don't use the action window when playing, just name, artist, album, yr, birate, rating, track number..that already takes up the whole screen with tree hidden using (1024x768) resolution.
i cant understand why they made it bold in the first place, if you want to see whats playing, look at the bar at the top.
If u want to know whats playing...the little white circle shows where it is. The track name was in a slightly different colo(u)r too. If you have a huge playing now list, i think the above would suffice. That white circle was a marker.
Admitedly not too clear for some but with bold, i cant see quite a few of the tracks (completely) in playing now.

I voted for
No, it messes up column sizing and would like an option to remove it
well I like playing now bold but would rather have the column sizing fixed
-

Agreed !! i dont mind it bold either
The issue really is getting auto-resizing fixed rather than bold or not.
(Heh..these polls need some serious thought when it comes to options)
-
OK, well, I guess I just use MC in a fundamentally different way, because auto-resizing would just be no use to be whatsoever, so I'll just carry on blissfully ignorant :-)
-
This is probably related to the fact that column auto sizing behaviour was changed slightly. See Matt's post in this thread:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=20127
Personally, I find the new behaviour annoying. It doesn't really make sense to me. I have autosize columns enabled because I want to see all of the info in the columns, not just part of it. If I only wanted to see part of it, I would turn auto sizing off.

Well spotted Rocket !!
Auto-sizing now uses the width at around the 95th percentile instead of at the 100th percentile like it used to. That is by design.
Don't know why this was done, i suppose it helps if a few fields are inordinately long relative to the rest, they don't monopolise the display of the rest. This seems like a good idea in theory.

I stopped using auto-resizing long time back, as i found it tended to slow library display. Would just use manual resizing in PN. have switched on (auto-resizing) in (10.0.111) and dont' notice too much of a slowdown so far.
i have mixed thoughts now over auto-resizing, 95% or 100%, which is better ?
i think if PN lists are very long 95% is good. If u keep PN lists small then 100% is preferred.
i find that i dont tend to have large PN lists, nor do i use the bottom half of the library display that much (use panes to navigate where i want to) so the list below is usually < 100 items.
Given the above, i prefer that auto-resizing was set to 100% rather then 95%.

Bold is beautiful 8)
-
Yep, it was all discussed elsewhere. People were asking for it not to do 100% because that would cause the rarer longer lines to throw it out for the majority of shorter lines...

I don't recall ever seeing a thread about that and I've been visiting Interact at least once a day for probably two years.
Anyway, to me, auto size should actually do just that. As it functions now, it is no different than if it was turned off or broken. And actually, as I'm playing around with it at the moment, its' behaviour seems to be rather inconsistent and illogical.

Yep
..Poll options...should have been whether ppl were happy or not with the way auto-resize works.
wonder if another poll should be done ? Now thats things are clear(er)

The only thing that slightly annoys my about the bold is when you have filenames in the view. Because it is bold it is much longer and doesnt match up with the files in the same directory when they are next to each other in the list confusing things.
e.g.
D:\My Music\Various Artists\Blue Café\CD2\12 - Nacho Sotomayor - I Don't Care.mp3
D:\My Music\Various Artists\Blue Café\CD2\13 - Mystic Diversions - Move Closer.mp3
at first glimpse you would think these aren't in the same directory. Bold just the main information or choose?

after reading this post it seems that there should be an option to
go NON-BOLD if you want to. just like the choice to auto-resize
columns. i've also noticed that in some cases there is a cut off of
text length but it is so rare, i'm happy to have this feature. hopefully
it will be improved in the next build and we can choose b/w BOLD or
NON-BOLD for our selected playing file. there should also be an increase
in the maximum lenght of track column, and artist columns.
when i have artist with three letters in the name, such as RZA
the title ARTIST gets shorten also; it becomes A... which is somewhat
annoying.
great work, we are almost there.

I love the idea of the currently playing track standing out in some way, and I understand why some people don't want bold to be that answer.
So, how about some sort of background highlighting, like the highlighting that occurs when you manually click on a file (in Thunderstorm it's 'candy apple red'). Maybe the currently playing track could just have a different COLORED font, or a different color background (green maybe).
I really want to have the track stand out, but BOLD is not the only way to do this.
-
that would be a great option, use a different color. this works for me.
i love the fact that we can have options. some people like things one
way, other like it another. maybe this like the auto-size column can be
added as an option in future builds. :)

You don't need any future build. Try this:
Options --> Tree & View --> View Settings --> List --> Auto Size Columns.
There you go.

That would be nice if it resized for the bolded text, but it doesn't.

i already knew that auto-resize was available, i meant maybe we could
have a choice about text bolding, the same way we have a choice with auto-resize column.
this way people who don't like the whole shuffle of text bolding can change it,
and other who like it can keep it.
this topic is dead though. i guess like auto-resize column, we will get a choice
soon enough.
