Can someone please tell me how to copy over files (video and audio) from one PC to another. My home and work PCs are identical in library structure. I want to be able to import new music files to my work PC and retain all the tag information from my home PC.
The only way I have been able to do this is to save (backup) the library from home and restoring that file at work. Since both machines are setup the same way this works great, however..... this overwrites any settings that have been changed on existing tags, ie: ratings, on my work PC. Not good.
There must be an easier way. Please help! ::)

how are the two connected?

how are the two connected?
I take an external hard drive and copy the new folders of music & videos over. Via firewire.

aaah - good news, the answer's easy...
open mc > select the files you want > tools > library tools > move copy disk file > select where you want them COPIED (not moved) > sit back and bob's you uncle

I don't understand..... That copies the files to the external drive. At work how do I import these files with tag info?
-
i 'think' it copies the files with the tag info, then when you import at the other end all the tag info is there (if you have 'tag info stored in files' box checked)
the problem i syou need to do this daily to sync the files...just like a pda
if thats too much effort can you leave the files on one pc then login remotely to media server and stream the content?

Yeah... that would work with my audio files but tags are not stored within video files. Streaming them would take awhile for videos.
It would be great to be able to save (backup) a folder with all its media and import that media without disturbing anything else.

okay try this...
listen/watch at home - then before you leave for work backup the library as usual, load it at work
then when you leave work backup the library and take it home then load the file and carry on...
because you want to keep 2 systems synced you are going to have to do some work...

You could also back-up your library (file>library>back-up library) and then copy that back-up file (from J River>data) to the portable drive and then to your other computer's J River data folder and then use the "restore library" function.

Here is my problem with the current backup library method.
I'm one of 3 DJ at this bar. Each one of us uses MC for audio and video entertainment. One of the other DJs loves making new playlist and rate songs.
I'm in charge of bringing in new stuff.
I complete the initial tagging information on all media. For the most part, both system have the same number of files and the same Library structure, however.... how do I work at home with new stuff, while the DJs at work are changing ratings and making playlist.
I wish there was a way to merge libraries. This way all my new stuff can be saved (backed up) separately and merged in to my 2nd PC (work library).
Thanks all of you for your great suggestions and advice. . I truly believe MC has the best group of online board users.

given all the info the best way i can think to do this is each DJ has a separate library. you load up your library using library restore, tweak it during the night then back it up and take it home, work on it ...then backup and retore it back on the machine in the club
etc etc
pip

I could do that, but how do the other Djs get the new music into their libraries?
-
err...(thinking...) all three of you share 1 library in the club, then you could copy it when you go home...
would that work?

Yeah.... But let's say I'm gone for two days from the club. I'm working at home recording and mixing new music for the weekend. Several days has now made the two systems out of date. Mine at home with all the new stuff, and the club with it's new playlist and ratings. How do I match them? Mc is working at the club from 12 noon to 2am. The only time I have is the morning to go in and transfer data.
I've been trying to get them from changing any tag info for two days during the week. But some how something always get lost in the transfer.
There has to be an easier way..... ?

there isnt a simple synch function like a pda might have for you to manage two locations, anything i suggest will be a workaround at best...
another suggestion is that you do the library backup when you are there day in day out. When youre away for a few days the only thing i can suggest is you bring an external drive to the venue and sort the library by 'last altered' then copy any more recent files to the external drive and then copy any recently altered files from the external drive to MC. if this is done from within MC it will retain the tag info
hardly slick but its the best i can come up with while under the influence at 4.30...
