I have stored all my MP3 and video files on a external harddisk.
I would like to store all related data in a subfolder on this disk
(library, current playlist, recent played files ...), not in the data directory
of Media Center. For the library itself i can define a separate path,
i know, but all the other data like "curplaylist.jmr" i cannot.
Or is this possible?
BTW: What are the files browser 1.jmd, browser.jmd for?

i dont know if its possible but i do the following:
1) backup the MC library regularly. use file>library>backup library
2) i use cobian backup 5 (which is free and was recommended to me by someone on this board - so thanks) to make a daily backup of the cover art directory

You can install Media Center on that disk. Backup your library. Uninstall MC and make a custom install to that disk. Restore the library. That way you have everything there.
A free tip: Buy another external disk and backup everything from the first external disk there. Frequently. (Unless you already have a different method for that.)

first point i know nothing about
but
the 2nd point is very important - i neglected that once and lost a whole bunch of data a while back. now i have 4 external drives with data on 2 of them and 2 serving as backups

How come? Firefighter wanted to keep all MC data on the same disk with media files. Because MC by default keeps all data in it's own application folder the simple solution is to install MC on that external disk.
It doesn't have to be in the "C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\"
folder. My current path for Media Center is "C:\soft\MJB". I like to keep all paths short. The "Soft" is my software folder and the abbreviation "MJB" comes from Media Jukebox times.

I keep my music in D:\My Music\[artist]\[album]
What I did to move my lib to another sub-dir:
Created D:\My Music\-mc- (or something)
From MC: 'File - Library - Library Manager'
'Add' supplying name, new location above & clone from current
Made sure the new lib is active
From Options - File Location, set Track image location to D:\My Music\-mc-\art
And now i use Karen's Replicator (http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp (http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp)) to backup my entire D: drive to an external drive and everythings backed up.
