Title: POLL: Should there be an off topic board?
Post by: bjsolem on May 19, 2004, 12:31:03 pm
Jims thread about liars sparked a debate about an OT forum......

My mind is made up.  Don't confuse me with facts.

And what is your mind telling us? :)

I would like to see a off topic forum...

Mainly cause you can discase new artist or get advise on Web browsers or other Non JRiver software...

There are a lot of people that know alot about different things, So if I'm looking for a New Virus scanner then I can get opinions.

Just me opinion.

Just to be clear, I don't have a problem with 95% of the OT threads I have seen here.  Most are interesting, funny, informative or just harmless.

Threads like "Who's the biggest liar" are nothing if not inflammatory and I think it is a disservice to post those here.  I want MC to be as successful as possible (that benefits all of us), but I think threads like that have the potential of turning people away.

That being said, an OT forum for controversial subjects is a much much better idea than posting them here.

I used to think an o/t board was a good idea but the more I thought about it  , it would be a place not everyone would go to so You would miss alot of  Interaction with the whole forum

I'd go for a seperate OT board.
If I wanted to read OT then I'd go there. If I wanted surrport then I come here. It just makes it easier to search for information IMHO

Ooops, I made a mistake and selected # 1 while I wanted to choose #3... :(

Don't know what i was thinking about... Anyway, I think that an OT board wouldn't be read/checked that often. I like the way the boards are right now. I think the percentage of posts that are OT is small enough to be left alone. For those who don't like reading those posts, just ignore them.  ::)

I don't really understand the idea of "not" wanting an off topic forum.  If you like off topic threads, you can go there.  Why do people insist on keeping off topic threads in THIS forum?  I've heard the argument that most people wouldn't "see" them if they weren't in this forum, but isn't that the point?

OT posts tend to lower the perceived "professionalism" of a forum.  There are support newsgroups that I simply stopped going to because of all the OT posts, which constantly pushed the "real" posts down the list so far that they prevented actual support questions from getting the response they deserved.

I would like to see a forum dedicated to the discussion of gourmet coffee. All aspects. Beans, grinding techniques, brewing methods, etc. I feel these discussions often get lost amid the techinical discussions about this "Media Center" thing.

The great thing about this forum is it's sense of community, for lack of a better term. It's really more like a coffee house with it's long-time regulars, occasional regulars and new never-before-seen people all intermingling and engaging in easy conversations. Underlying all topics is the one unifying thread, coffee. A great deal of time, there is no mention of coffee. All topics are welcome as they are all starting from folks that have a common interest and, by extension, many common interests. If you had to go to another room to talk about anything else but coffee, it wouldn't have the same chemistry.

I voted for #3.

Darn!! You beat me to that coffee thing. I really did come up with it on my own. Great minds, huh?

Larry,
Define "real".

I'm a tea drinker myself - don't "get" coffee ?

Another vote for #3. I think it's good to mix it up a bit, I don't mind if it's separated, or maybe move the OTs after a day or two.

OT: Favorite Tea: Ceylon.

Cool, keep them where they are.

Then quit locking the topic when the thread suits your viewpoint.

As for those who say they like the forum for the respect everyone gets, I will say that is because so far the topics dealt with MC and technology.

When you start on the 'You idiot" topics, that is what you will soon have.

Never fails, nothing saintly about this particular group. Keep the "Everyone knows GWB is stupid" posts and you'll soon here from those who don't think he is.

And we have lots of people from all over the world. There are those in the US that think US presidential politics aren't really much of anyone else's business.

Before long we'll all divide into our camps and trash the 'enemy'.

But, as long as the threads don't get locked, it'll be fun.

My mind is made up.  Don't confuse me with facts.
That is correct.

If I want 'facts' I'll go to a place that specializes in whatever it is I'm interested in.

Like, a media player and associated technology.

Threads usually get locked when people start taking shots at each other.

Other times it's just time to move on.

This is one of those.
