Title: Media Center 11.0.8 Alpha (NOT RECOMMENDED)
Post by: Matt on June 16, 2004, 04:31:59 pm
We're just starting work on Media Center 11.  From time to time, we'll share our progress.

Think of these early builds like the hole in the ground before you start building a house.  Much like the hole, it's hard to get excited about these builds, and if you're not careful with them, you'll get hurt.

The major changes so far are a rewritten database core, movement towards improved document handling, and a new user-customizable view called "tile view."  Many more changes will come with time.  We're listening.

BACKUP YOUR LIBRARY BEFORE INSTALLING -- THE DATABASE FORMAT HAS CHANGED AND THERE MAY BE BUGS THAT COULD CAUSE YOUR LIBRARY TO BE LOST

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110008.exe

11.0.8 (6/16/04)

1. NEW: New import system that integrates multiple directory searching, finding and fixing broken links, checking for external changes, and making a backup. (basically one-stop library maintenance)

With the new import system, just add the folders where you keep files.  Then run the tool once in a while.

If you move or change a library file with an external tool, MC will reconnect to it as long as it's still in one of the search paths.

We'll probably make a way to have this automatically run once in a while with a future build.

Yeah -- we'll get it into one of the next builds.  Thanks.

Thanks Matt... The Document handler is really a great thing to use at work...

I do a lot of Access building and creating and it will be awesome to manage them in MC!!

RFE:  New IMPORT WIZARD "Progress Meter" would be nice ... Its been working on my database for about 15 minutes now .. and I have no idea if its locked ..

1/2 my files are stored on a mapped drive ... but, man is taking a while .. and I would like to know if its dead in the water or working :)

NOTE:  I have been getting some REBOOTS on my PC when adding files to the Playing Now ... by RIGHT-CLICK PLAY  ... random .. but I never get reboots ...

About the Importing..

Are you not getting a second box that say's what it's searching and importing?

Once the importing starts, if you hit cancel it just freezes...

Edit... Nevermind it wasn't freezing it was updating the DB...

You should see a status dialog.  What does it say it's doing?

Cancel isn't hooked up yet.

Thanks.

Hello Matt,

This is a great new feature. It makes my life so much easier!

Would it be possible to specify what file types should be imported from specific folders? My Music folders also include .JPG's but I would prefer that they do not end up in the "Pictures" part of the database.

Thanks.

Michel.

This might sound like an overkill feature but it would actually be a very nice way to cutomize the search.

Also, once a file is removed form the library can it be ignored going forward, so it doesn't keep getting re-added?

This version doesn't want to sync with my ipod and I get a media core error.  Says it can't communicate and says I should make sure device is connected and turned on.  I get the error after it analyzes the device and shows the count of songs on it.  Also shouws the playlist, album. artist etc. categories.  As soon as I try to do anything with the songs, I get the error described above.

Yes, please!  Idealy, with inclusion and exclusion lists.

Any chance of allowing user defined classes and file extensions, e.g. Drawings, specifying the extensions for Visio, SmartDraw, AutoCAD etc.?

Great addition!

But i think that with the added time for the various operations the need for a thread for the import process becomes more and more important...

Thanks!

Tag saving is in its own thread now.

Library update only takes a few seconds on a fast machine with a local library, so we're not sure it needs to be a background task.

Is anyone able to get the Ipod to work with MC 11?

If so, I've got to take a look at my Ipod, maybe reinitialize etc.

If not, I wonder when mc 11 will work the ipod?

Another curious thing, my ipod showed up with a different name, (my name) instead of ipod, in the drives and devices list.  I renamed it to Ipod and it still didn't work.

would you be able to add the ability to search as you type like in itunes?
Also will native support be in for mpeg4?
like playing m4a or itunes and its m4p files?
Ripping in m4a? Maybe?
Please do these and force me to drop itunes! :D :D

I find that I am having to run the import function twice each time I am importing new music.

1.  Run import.  MC finds my new music, but also 'finds' music that is already in my library.  The music that was already in the library shows up with the little red x denoting that it is unavailable.
2.  Run import again and the 'broken link files' that are already in the database go away.

I can't figure out if there is a rhyme or reason for the specific files it duplicates - it seems to be different each time I run it.

I haven't yet found any ill effects of this problem other than what I described.

Edit:  I've also found random songs that do not have track duration anymore.

When importing, It may come back with added xx amount of files and updated xx files.
Is there a way we can get a log after the update is finished to see exactly what changed?

When you run the import wizard it changes some tag fields... I have noticed that Date on all my files have changed from 1973 (or whatever it was) to 6/11/04  ??
