Title: WMA lossless encoder plugin?
Post by: khaos100 on June 16, 2004, 06:18:16 pm
I just purchased a Nomad Zen Xtra and would like to use the lossless WMA.  Too make my life easy, it would be nice to convert all my APE files to Lossless WMA.  Will there be a plug-in for the lossless WMA encoder?

Otherwise I'm stuck converting APE to WAV then using Creative's encoder to go from WAV to Lossless WMA and lose all the tags in the process.  I currently use MJ 8, but would purchase MC 10 now if I could encode with lossless WMA.

Please, please consider this.  I like APE, but it's not supported anywhere else, and the lossless WMA will be the way I go.  If MC will only play it, but not encode it, I guess my use of a product I've been happy with will end.

Thanks.

If this does happen, will tag info transfer, or will it have to be re-entered?

Are you sure the Zen handles wma lossless??

Snip:  Alas, despite the fact that the Zen is supposed to play WMA files, it cannot handle WMA Lossless

D'oh

I saw the WMA converter with the Creative software and thought, yeah!

Couldn't play it though.

Why offer a converter for a fromat the player can't play?

Looks like it's MP3 at 320K

FYI, MC 10.0.145 can convert APE to WMA lossless and the tag information is preserved. I just tried it.

By the way, why you need lossless with a portable device? I have great difficulties to find quality differences when comparing best quality MP3s, MPCs and OGGs to the original. (Using a high-end sound card and $2500 home stereo equipment.)

It's not that it won't play wma, it just wont play Lossless..

With a portable I would try Variable around 160 kbps... I used to use 320 but could not tell the diff with 160...

A Terratec DMX 6fire 24/96 with ASIO drivers. It uses real 44.1 khz instead of the usual resampling to 48 kHz. Output is usually optical to a Yamaha RX-V 1400 receiver.

Any more discussion about playback hardware should go to Device Feedback forums.
