We're just starting work on Media Center 11. From time to time, we'll share our progress.
Think of these early builds like the hole in the ground before you start building a house. Much like the hole, it's hard to get excited about these builds, and if you're not careful with them, you'll get hurt.
BACKUP YOUR LIBRARY BEFORE INSTALLING -- THE DATABASE FORMAT HAS CHANGED AND THERE MAY BE BUGS THAT COULD CAUSE YOUR LIBRARY TO BE LOST

11.0.11 (6/22/04)
1. Changed: Several improvements to system that makes MC not advance tracks ahead of what is being played.
2. Fixed: Tooltip for tray icon wouldn't properly update when switching zones.
3. NEW: Dropping an image file on the Image Action Window will associate that image with the selected files.
4. NEW: Added Album Gain support. (album gain automatically calculated from files in album)
-
Wishes:
-Sizeable panels: ie: "search bar" and "Player progress", the player progress at the moment is to big and wasted and the search bar too small to be confortable.
-Allow to align/dock everything, treeview, panels, etc,
-Extra tag to better catalog albums with multiple CDs, ie: CD1, CD2, etc
-Option to convert "view schemes" to playlists, at the moment to create a playlists based on genres is a real pain. Playlists are useful to be exported into mp3 players that do not support things like genre or albums.
-
After editing an Album name, the previous album name still appears in the Album pane (but with no files under it) when I display the entire library.
When I display only that artist, the album name no longer appears and is properly replaced by the 'new' name.
When I return to the full library being displayed the 'old' album name still appears (even after I did a new import/search, shut down & restarted MC, etc)
*NOTE- deleting the cache (as suggested elsewhere here) fixed this problem.
3. NEW: Dropping an image file on the Image Action Window will associate that image with the selected files.
Does this mean if I have song files selected I can just drop the Cover Art on the Action Window to associate?
-
I didn't get the chance to try it in the last couple of builds, but I got the chance to try out the MKV support...
One problem:
Files with multiple audio streams play all the streams at the same time.
And two requests, if possible:
support for subtitles and chapters.
I'm ecstatic MC finally is trying to support mkv!
Thanks!
EDIT:
Forgot to mention -- Love the multi-zone sync!

The last few builds have been pretty unstable for me .. I hadn't seen anyone mention this before ..
When doing basic tasks (Importing, Tag Updates (huge quantities), Audio Analysis) ... anything that taxes the processor .... I get lots of reboots of my PC. Honestly, I can say my PC does not reboot ... it's pretty dang stable ... I havent made any changes, loaded any M$ updates, nothing new ...
And, Its pretty easy to reproduce. If I remove EVERYTHING that is running in the background and let MC be the only thing running it does better ... but still crashes at any unknown time :)
Am I alone in the instability? Is this a known? If it's known, that's ok ... but if I'm unique, I'd like to get this one straightened out.

BUG:
Items are showing in the panes that when clicked show no files.
Doing a search for these values returns nothing. The only way to see these files is to then go to the root of 'Media Library' and do a search for the values specified. If you do this it then returns the files and they do in fact have the values specified and should be showing up under the View Scheme selected as they meet the criteria.
All the settings used, the panes displaying the information yet no files being displayed.

-
My audio files are all shown as (Multiple Artists) in Album Artist (Auto), even those with the same Artist and a blank Album Artist.

Software can't easily cause a reboot -- I'd say you have a hardware or driver problem. Bad memory is often the culprit.

Erase the [MC Library]\Cache folder and see if that fixes it.
If so, see if you can isolate how to reproduce it. (maybe editing, adding, or removing files)
Thanks.

Got an "Internal playing buffer error accumulated too much spent data. Please report this error to JRiver as soon as possible so that it can be fixed" so that's what i'm doing :). The song is a long mp3, over an 1 hour long and it stoped after a half-hour or so... I used to be able to listen to all of that song and no modification to the hardware have been made recently.
Edit: Ok i just figured out that the problem is not happening during playback but a few seconds after i clicked on pause.
Here are my specs if that can help :

Deleted the cache folder, restarted it and it's still doing it.
Changed the genre to something else, it still showed in the panes but not the file.
Same with changing the media type.

Well, the time elapsed counter doesn't go negative like it did in MC10 between tracks (which is a good thing), but when it gets to about 10 seconds left, time (according to the counter) starts accelerating and the track change occurs with somewhere around 2-3 seconds remaining on the counter.
This only seems to affect the counter. The track change seems to occur without any audio speed changes and it seems to occur at the right place.

Hello!
After far too much time away, I'm back :) Finally, the mid-terms are over and I can relax (well, for two weeks, at least...)
I Decided to have a squiz at the latest from the JR crew. Very nice, indeed.
HardDisk Location is broken though, it only shows the root folder.
Oh, and there's a Service Manager in the Tools menu ;)
But hey, keep up the good work and stuff. Hopefully you'll see more of me from now on.
Keep on truckin'
Scott.

ERROR:
"Internal Play Buffer Error: Playing buffer accumluated too much spent data. Please report this to JRiver as soon as possible so that it can be fixed."
-
just got this up and running and two (good) things have immediately come to my attention:
1) MC11 uses much less memory. MC 10 would frequently get above 150MB on my machine with just general playback. MC11 has been hovering at 1/4 to 1/2 of that...
2) Tagging large amounts of media is so much quicker as while its updating several '000 files im not forced to wait but can keep queueing stuff up...
good work so far
will let you know what else i come across

simple suggestion:
i use the 'copy listening to' function very often, however when im watching a film / looking at images / other it still says 'listening to'.
Id really like it if this could be adapted to say something that makes more sense, like:
Watching xxx on MC 11 - for videos
Looking at xxx on MC 11 - for pictures
or similar.

i'd go back in and edit it, but then your comment won't make sense!
prehaps "sample text" would have been better

Anyone tried this out yet ?

Anyone tried this out yet ?
Just got back from vacation, so I haven't had much time to test the album gain. But from what I was able to test, it seems to work pretty well. I'll be doing some more testing in the near future.
For the testing I have done, I loaded up a mostly quiet album and a mostly loud album. The level betwen the last track of the quiet album and the first track of the loud album seemed blended pretty well. Gapless tracks on the quiet album seemed to be at the proper relative volume (I was also watching the track replay gain as displayed in the DSP Studio window and it was constant within each album).
Thanks for this feature guys, it's much appreciated!

Ditto Here
My audio files are all shown as (Multiple Artists) in Album Artist (Auto), even those with the same Artist and a blank Album Artist.
Seeing this here too.

Thanks.

I did not take note at the time, but my usual mode is Direct Sound, so this should be what I was using. IF this occurs again, will be sure to note.

Deleting songs from a playlists whith shift (remove from media library and send to recycle bin), does not remove the song, when pressing F5 in the playlists, the song appears again.

Can the last played time be changed/fixxed?
Currently it goes over to # of days after 100hrs,
Seeing 48:00:00
Should be 2 Days ago,
Should roll over to days after 23:59 hrs.

DirectSound

I saw that error once. I am using DirectSound, gapless playback.

Should roll over to days after 23:59 hrs.
I agree with you, but didn't we (i.e. JRiver vs. its users) have this argument once before?
-
They said that they wouldn't look at something this small in 10...
No harm in bringing it up again.

*cough cough* .... It's been a week, I'm having beta withdrawals ...
I need a new version, but make sure there are some bugs in it to keep me busy ;)
I've had to keep myself busy downloading 10s of thousands of songs off of newsgroups just to test out the version I have ... Its working great with a 70k library so far !!!
Just awaiting a new Media Server (w/ selectable fields) & a new automated (or timed) import functionality :)
Im curious what snazzy little feature you have been working on for a week ... or are you working on a new homebrew that you are going to send to all of your users ( PLEASE ?!?)

Redoing my entire database and I'm currently re-building all the thumbnails. Sad part is that MC will not come up to the foreground to push the cancel button. I have to just leave it be. Hopefully it will be done soon...been over 12 hours now.
Anyway I think that 'analyzing thumbnail' bug is still there, even with all the caching MC does. I'll find out later today.
-
Am I right in thinking that media server is currently broken in version 11 or is that just here?? Originally my library on the remote machine came up but all track info was blank when accessing through the new version (it was set to autoconnect to my remote library). AFter telling it to reconnect it came up completely blank... worked fine with 10.0.149...

JRiver Crew...
Just to let you guys know, The new importing structure/tool/whatever is amazing...
I moved around some files last night and clicked on import and checked all the boxes, *(fix links etc) and it worked amazing.... This feature itself is worth it's weight in gold!!
-
ok good news...the thumbnail issue doesn't seem to be a problem anymore. It must have been the old database causing it.
and it took 15.4 hours to do the thumbnails...
-
suggestion:
i maintain 2 libraries. 1 big library of ape's and high bitrate mp3's. the other is a selection of tracks that i transcode to 128k for portable use.
there is a transcoding option that says "skip files of the same type" how about also having a "skip files of a lower bitrate" option. It seems unlikely that people would ever want to transcode to a higher bitrate.
i know i can manually select the files, but this would make it quicker.

I've found a problem with Album Gain. I imported an album encoded in APE into my library. This album didn't have a replay gain assigned, so I analyzed it. When it was done, Track Gain worked as expected, but Album Gain wasn't working at all. I ended up exiting MC and restarting. This fixed the problem.
-
I paused a song and left the room. When I returned it had started itself back up. I paused it again and after a few seconds say the message:
"Internal play buffer error: playing buffer accumulated too much spent data."
-
well this version just dont see 30 % of my audio library files...They dont want to be imported.
-
Due to "miscelaneous unknown causes" MC11 often freezes itself (or locks-up) in the minimized state and refuses to either restore/maximize/close.
If I try to force it to close using Task Manager I get a message that this cannot be closed, forcing a reboot to get MC back to operational.
Unfortunately I have not yet isolated a situation or action which causes this to occur.
When importing files, the Importing dialog box partially de-skins. As the dialog says that a backup is being created, MC freezes and prevents any other program, window, or menu from coming to the top (including the Task Manager). As soon as the import is complete all the other things I had clicked on during the freeze all come to the top.
-
My audio files are all shown as (Multiple Artists) in Album Artist (Auto), even those with the same Artist and a blank Album Artist.
Same with my library.
1742 files, 1399 appearing in (Multiple Artists)
Files show up ok in Album/Artist (not auto),
-
Request (while it's early enough)...
Dual mode RG: Have MC read/write both it's proprietary tags and those used by MP3Gain/VorbisGain/MPCGain/etc. The benefits are obvious.
10-27
-
While trying to add files to the Document folder from within MC using the Import Media option, I change the "search" area to just my "c:\" drive but it still is trying to read "whole Computer"
-
You need to uncheck the broken links box and external file changes.
-
suggestion:
how about adding an option to the 3D picture views which stops the images from being stretched to 4:3 (or whatever it is) in the spinning cube and slideshow modes. Some of my pictures are taken in different aspects and look silly when strectched to fit. Id much rather have black bars along 2 edges.
thanks
-
additionally...
if im playing some files and i scroll around in playing now and dbl click to start a new track, when the new track begins, as MC starts to play it the screen jumps back to the original song, rather than staying focussed on the new track. which means that i have to scroll back to where i wanted to be.
