Title: Rating for multiple users/iPods
Post by: SMatson on June 22, 2004, 05:58:11 pm
Can MC keep track of two users rating the same library and syncing to different iPods?

Thanks,

Scott

MC can't save two different values to the same tag in the same library.  You could make a custom tag for each person (i.e. "Scott's rating" and "Jane's rating") and save a numeric value for each one, but unfortunately it wouldn't be read by the iPod, which only reads a specific set of tags.

You might be able to do something fancy with playlists, but this depends on exactly what iPod functionality you're looking for.  For example, you could create a playlist of "Scott's rating = 5" and one of "Jane's rating = 5" and include one or the other of these lists in each sync.  This would allow you to only play songs with a specific person's "5" rating.  You could make similar playlists with rating >= 4, etc.  This isn't as elegant as the official "rating" tag, but it 'might' give you the functionality you're looking for.

i assume you want to do the foll.

x iPods, x different ratings.

x people want to rate unrated tracks on their iPods and sync those back to MC and
x people might want to hear what the other has rated or their own favorites.

You would create x custom rating fields for each of the x people. Listen on the iPod and use the default  Rating field. When syncing back you would need to use the Library Tools->Move/Copy Fields to copy from the Ratings to the person's Custom rating field.  The default Ratings field is used to temporarily store the rating iPod gave it. Once the copy is done, reset the default rating fields to ? if the other person has not rated it as yet otherwise leave as is.
I'm assuming you will use a random smartlist that matches a certain criteria to give you tracks to rate on your iPod.

This copying/syncing might get tedious over time, might get easier if someone makes a plugin specifically that can deal with this.

When you want to listen to your favorites or some one else's, a smartlist that queried the custom fields could help.
