Title: Ripping Failed
Post by: freshmanjs on June 23, 2004, 10:22:00 am
Hi,

I am having a problem ripping cd's with Media Center version 10, build 149.

When I try to rip a cd, the first song completes successfully.  Then, on some of the subsequent songs, I get an immediate "Failed" in the status before it even begins to rip the song.  It moves on to the next one right away.  On most cd's, approximately 3-4 tracks give the "Failed" message.

I have tried ripping the same cd's in iTunes, and have had no problems.

Any ideas what could be happening here?

thanks!!
Freshman

An update -- when ripping in secure mode I get the same problem.  The message in the log says:

hard error unable to finish reading track.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Verify that DMA is enabled for this drive. Here is a link with help about DMA (see the section headed "To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager"):

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx)

Please let me know the results.

Thanks,

John,

I have already checked into this.  It is in DMA mode -- UDMA-2.

Thanks

bump -- still having this problem.  Interestingly, for the tracks that fail, the secure ripping log says the track completed ok.  However in the list view, the status showed failed, and there is no file on the disk.

Please help -- I need to rip a few hundred cds.

Thanks

Sorry about the delay on this. I can't reproduce the problem on any drive I have here, so I've ordered the LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-812S drive. I should have more info after I receive the drive and see if I can reproduce the ripping problems.

Thanks.

John,

Thanks -- I think I can explain what I'm seeing a little bit better now.  There seem to be 2 distinct  manifestations of this problem.

1) About half the time when I rip a cd, the last track does not rip.  In this case, I get a message in the secure rip log saying track did not complete.  Hard Errors, unable to complete reading the track.   In this case, a .ape file is created in my library, but it is not playable and very small.  This case only happens for the last track on the cd.

2) On about 2 tracks per cd, the ripping status changes to "Failed" immediately, before it even starts ripping the track and just moves on to the next track.  Interestingly, in this case, the secure log shows that the track completed ok 100% even though it did not.  In this case, no .ape file is created in my library.  This case happens for random tracks anywhere on the cd.

I do not have these problems if I rip through iTunes.

If you would like to use windows remote desktop to access my machine, I can arrange that for you.  Please let me know.

Thanks!
Jared

Thanks for the detailed info Jared. I'll let you know if I want to try the remote desktop thing. Hopefully I can reproduce the problem using the same device and fix it quickly.
