Title: Upgradng to MC 11
Post by: V-Man on July 14, 2004, 01:44:02 pm
I am interested in upgrading from MC10 to MC11. I originally purchased an MC8 license, upgraded to MC9 for free, then paid again for an upgrade to MC10.

What will it cost me to go to MC11 please?

Right now, there is no charge.  We may change that later.

Great stuff, Jim. So if I install it over the next couple of days, I'll be able to use it permanently, right?

I mean, if you later decide to charge for v11, that charge won't apply to me at that time? I'm not sure I will want to pay again and don't want to then have to downgrade to v10 (great product but does everything I need now).

Install now, use forever, maybe go back to 10, maybe not.

This is not that clear, isn't it true that once v11 imports a v10 database. there is no way to go back ?

It backs up your old database.  You can also do so.

Don't the V11 Alphas time out after a month or so?

Sorry, you're correct.  They do right now.

?

V11's still in alpha test - it's been stable for me, but there are still things missing and I have to assume that the next release could go badly wrong.  If you need stability, stick with v10 - if you enjoy pioneering, go with v11.  Remember that pioneers tend to get shot at!

I realise it's not totally stable - I don't mind the occasional crash, or even temporarily reduced functionality, provided the risks of data loss are small and I can at least pick out albums and play them.

I'm not in a hurry to use MC11, I just want to make sure I don't miss any opportunities of a free upgrade.

I was confused by JimH's comment:

It was too cryptic for my small brain  :-\

As I do not work for JRiver I can not answer this.... But with all the changes already in 11, I wouldn't think that there will be a free upgrade...

Users that purchased 9 also paid for 10.

Its hard to say how safe data will be, given its in alpha.  It would require constant backups, in case of a mistake, also since v11 has a diff database structure, there is no easy way to go back to v10. Cept to restore form backup and lose any changes made since.

Upgrading to v11, is a one way affair, each version times out after a month, so once a decison is made to go v11, v11 it will be.

Godspeed v11

Bear in mind that it's called v11 and not 10.1.  You could draw some conclusions from that.  They are unlikely to embark on coding a major new release without seeking some payback as someone has to pay the wages.  The big question is whether v10 users will continue to get support and fixes.  Previously, fixes have always been very timely until the next major release was started at which point interest in providing fixes in the previous version has tailed off big time unless something pretty catastrophic was unearthed (and that's pretty unlikely at this stage).

My guess is that there will be a charge for 11 once it's stable and that v10 users who find annoying little bugs will be talked into forking out for 11 if they want it fixed.  On the positive side I expect that the improvements in functionality delivered in v11 will be sufficiently tempting for most users to be able to justify a small upgrade fee.
