Title: Media Jukebox is unable to acquire license for thi
Post by: jarroyo on June 24, 2003, 08:05:44 am
I have been getting this intermittent error in MJ8.0.399 where the program says:

Playback Engine: Media Jukebox is unable to acquire license for this file.
Windows Media Error: 0x80070020

I am using WMA and it usually happens when I try to skip to the next song or coming out of using the pause button.  I get the message on a message box and after I dismiss it, if I doubleclick on the same song again, it plays it fine.

Any ideas what is going on?

along the same lines in #398 when I get the message that it is trying to acquire the license (and launchs a link to MS) the MJ will abort and there is no indication that it has grabbed the license.  I manually do the download of the license application and run it but no help.

I’m afraid this is a problem with Media Jukebox.  I rip all of my music to wma format as I feel it is superior at higher bitrates.  However, I get the same error message for music I’ve ripped and I have “Personal Rights Management” disabled.  The problem also appears to be intermittent.  I do not have the same problem with Windows Media Player or Music Match.  I expected Media Jukebox to resolve the issue with updated versions but it continues to be a problem.  I’ve been using Media Jukebox less and less because of this issue and I am unlikely to renew my license for future versions.  Too bad Media Jukebox has been unable to keep up.  I used to believe they offered a superior product.

Next time turn off the option to protect the files when encoding and you May never have this problem.

Ok...how do you turn off file protection in 8.0.399?  This doesn't appear to be an option and, as I mentioned, personal rights managment is disabled.

it may have something to do with the New Windows Media 9

===================================

Do you have that Installed?

I Know MJ8 at one point did not work with Windows Media 9 Installed.

I think I remember users also got an error like this, I thought they updated it but I could be mistaken.

Yep...I've got 9 installed.

I've adopted the wma format with some ambivalence owing to Microsoft's plans for world domination and track record of writing poor software but Music Match does not have the same problems I've had with MJ8.  I think MJ needs to address these issues to keep up.  However, I'm not opposed to converting my collection to a different format.

I noticed that a 128 kbps sample in wma sounded much better than the same in mp3.  Does anyone know of a website with good background information and compressed format comparisons?

I was never a wma fan but i must agree the WMA VBR format is much cleaner than MP3

The problem you're having is a problem with Windows Media.  Try the Microsoft site or a google search for more information on it.

Explore the options in WMP9.

Sorry folks.  I have the most recent updates for Windows Media Player and Media Jukebox.  As much as I dislike Microsoft I think it's too easy to blame them.  The competetion seems to have these issues hammered out.

I don't have a problem on my system using MC9 and files encoded with the new encoder in MS WMP. Since i don't use MJ8 I really can't help you work thru this.

======================================

I am wondering if you did a full reinstall of MS Windows Media if that will help.

=====================================

if you re-encode does it happen to the new windows media files or older ones that were encoded with the older encoder?

If MJ 8 worked before installing Windows Media 9, it sounds like a Windows Media bug.

In any event, Media Center 9 works perfectly with Windows Media 9 since it's built atop Microsoft's newest SDK.

Thanks.

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/

They have forums for almost every compressed format, except WMA. There is a lot of good info there, but I be carefeul about posting any statements like:

I would recommend spending at least a week or two or three just reading and following the threads that interest you before posting.

I was just trying to point out that over at HA if you post something like that, without any data (ie., an ABX test) to backup your feeling, you probably won't receive a very warm response.  :o

If you can provide more details, I think you will find there is a lot of help here.

WM is a moving target.  Support for it is better in our Media Center software.

I get this too.  And it appears there is no solution for this, other than an upgrade to MJ9.   Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 cannot be uninstalled.

I have emailed JRiver to say I'd like my money back, quoting the problem, and all these posts on the subject, but they asked me to post here before they would reply to me.

MJ was released before WMP9 was out.

An upgrade to MC may be free.  Details are here:

not quite true.

when your installing WMP9 it askes you if you would like to make a backup of your old windows media player if you wish to uninstall. if you say no then you are correct you can not install it. Unless you reinstall your windows and then you can use the older version of Windows Media Player that MJ8 was build around.
